This may a well beaten subject, but I must get an answer.
I have used an Iomega External HD (black series/800/firewire) for about 6 months, using it to load up with important files.
Now all of a sudden, it does get recognized by either my Mac G5 (OS X 10.4) or my MacBook Pro. In fact, I get the Disk Insertion (initialize/ignore/eject) window.
Why initialize, that will only wipe out all of my files on the HD.
iMac G4 Flat-Panel, OS 10.4.11: My iMac keeps recognizing one EXT FW HD but not my IOMEGA EXT FW HD. Both are journaled. Startup Disk selection in Prefs does not recognize the Iomage HD, yet I see it on my desktop. Whazzup? How to keep the Imega HD as my startup disk?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought a Minimax iomega 500 Gb hard drive last week, and it has worked perfectly until now - (after spending days removing data from my 2 Macs on to it).
I ejected it via the little icon in the finder window, like usual, switched off the power button at the back. When I went to use it again, I plugged the Firewire cable into my computer, switched the power button on at the back, and nothing! No icon on the desktop, I tried the other computer, different Firewire cables, but nothing. I need to get a USB to see if that works.
Periodically, my iOmega external HDD unmounts (dismounts?). Only after disconnecting and reconnecting both the power and the USB (connected to a powered hub) does the HDD mount again. This has happened about 3 times in the last 3 months. The HDD is about 2 years old and I have had no other problem with it. It works fine other than the unmounting.

I just flew down home for spring break, leaving my Macbook Pro charger at school. However, I do have the harddrive with all my backed up files. The problem is, my PC laptop (Dell, Windows XP) does not recognizes it. When I plug in the harddrive and turn it on, the computer recognizes that there is something plugged in (it gives me the option to safely remove hardware), but there is no sign of the drive anywhere.
Is there anyway my PC can read/recognize it?
I can not get my Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.4 to recognize a 5 year old external hard drive from iomega. The product code is 31759000 RDHD-U. The hard drive powers up, all cables have been checked to work on other devices, and yet nothing happens when connected.

I bought a 1TB Iomega Prestige drive, it worked great for a few months. Started making loud clicking sounds. Iomega sent me a replacement drive (refurbished).
I am using it as my time machine backup in Leopard, so it was really just a matter of plugging it in, formating it with the OSX file system and setting it up for time machine.
When attempting to format from Disk Utility, I get an error (see screenshot).
(Additional info: I can access it and format it without any problems from Windows 7 based PC).
After upgrading to 10.7,4 I can no longer access my external IOMega Prestige drive. This drive is encrypted/protected via IOMega's Drive Protection software.

How can one download photos files from lion into a iomega external drive? Those files have been worked in lightroom 3, iphoto, keynote?

I recently received a 15" Powerbook G4 with Leopard installed on it. I was trying to move some iTunes files when I realized that my 2nd Generation iPod Touch was not being recognized on the Desktop or Finder. The catch is that iTunes did know my iPod was hooked up. Anyone got any ideas on how i can make the iPod visible on desktop?

I believe the reason why I can't seem to burn either type of disc anymore is because I have plugged them into different USB ports over the many days I've been using these devices. They work fine on other computers and were working fine on this one, but Final Cut Pro uses a "Create Disc" program that I believe gets confused by which disc drive is to be used. Â
Final Cut Pro X completes the transcoding and goes to burn the DVD or BluRay disc (depending on which I selected in the Share menu) but nothing happens anymore.Â
How do I flush the hardware cache (if there is one) and restart with these external devices. The Mac Pro only has 4 USB ports but I needed more so I swap out the cables from time to time as I sync iPhones or upload memory cards to iPhoto.

I'm having some troubles with an external enclosure and my sister's new imac. The enclosure I'm using is a Tao Tec 2500 (2.5" drive) IDE --> USB device with the Y-cable. The drive has been formatted to NTFS and has some files on it. As far as I can tell though the version of OSX the new imac is running should support read capability with the file system though. The computer is a latest generation imac (purchased about 12/20/2006) and running a new revision of OSX (about 1.0.4.7 I believe). My problem seems to be the computer simply does not recognize the drive. Disk utility doesn't see it nor the usb manager in system tools. The LED indicator on the drive indicates that it's receiving power and I've tried swapping the usb ports around just to be sure I don't have a bumed port. It simply seems like OSX just doesn't know the drive's there.

They are daisy-chained using Firewire 800. Recently my G5 has stopped recognizing one of the drives. Is there any way to get my machine to re-recognize the missing drive? I have rewired the four drives to see if there was a problem with the cabling, but this does not appear to be the case. I am coming up to the 1 year warranty period on this drive and need to get it back to LaCie if there is no other solution.

I recently invested in a refurbished iMac which is running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D2001).
I am trying to access my existing external hard drive through the machine and although this lights up when plugged in, it doesn't appear in the finder. Other Memory sticks work without problem.
It is a Western Digital Elements 160GB Portable Hard Drive that has worked and continues to do so without problem on my ancient iBook G4.

I have used a Samsung HX 1Tb external hard drive under OSX Snow Leopard with absolutely no problem. Since I upgraded to the free (improved?!?) OSX Mavericks my Macbook Pro cannot "see" my hard drive. All I get when I plug it in is the following message -
my MacBook thinks that the hard drive is formatted for windows - but why should it work OK under Snow Leopard but not with Mavericks? I don't want to simply reformat the external drive because I'll lose all the files stored on it.Is there suitable software/Apps that I can use to let my Mac access this external hard drive.Incidentally my partners new Macbook Air can still read this hard drive.Â

My WD firewire 800 drive has stopped working, I can hear it spinning when I plug it in but the light doesn't come on and my computer doesn't recognize it. I've tried both the firewire and usb connections.

I had accidently formatted my 500GB to use for Time Machine, but realized, I didn't need that much storage, so reverted to the 250GB for Time Machine and the 500GB for storage. But it seems, in the formatting stage (for Time Machine), it set my file system for the 500GB to Mac OS Journaled. I can see this hard drive on the Mac, but it does not recognize it in Windows (although I hear the USB plug in sound, doesn't show up in "My Computer"). Does this have to do with the formatting? If so, how can I format it so that the external hard drives can be read by both Mac OS X and Windows? Does it require moving my data (before formatting?)?
