Jun 20, 2014My external hard drive has been repeatedly ejected improperly and now it is not displaying on my computer, not even in disk utility. How do I re-mount this external hard drive? In the past when this has happened, all I had to do was go to Disk Utility or use DiskWarrior to fix the issue but now it won't even show up in either of these apps. Â

Jun 22, 2012I have three external harddrives all of which are connected through different ports, all show up in finder, all show up in disk utility, but none of them will show up on my desktop. I looked at a few other posts similar to mine but the answers given to other problems have not worked. There is no way all three of my cords are causing a connection problem and I have repaired and verifyd all the drives and still nothing.

Oct 11, 2009I have searched the forum and google but have not been able to find an answer on how to import Outlook pst files (mail and contacts) stored on a disk into the Apple/Mac mail. I no longer have acces to a pc and outlook, I only have the pst files. Does any one know how I can get these to work on the apple/mac mail? Is there a trial version of "Office 2008 for Mac"?

Apr 8, 2012I installed a recovery copy of Lion on an external USB drive, and although it shows up as a potential startup disk in System Preferences, I can't boot from it. When I select it as the startup disk in System Preferences and reboot, I end up booting from the internal drive. When I hold down ALT when booting, I see the access light on the USB drive blink a few times, but it doesn't show up in the bootable volumes list.The following Knowledge Base article makes me think my problem is that I use the same volume for Time Machine backups: url...I suppose one option would be to partition the external drive, using one partition for backups and the other as a recovery drive. Would that work? Is that the only option?

Sep 24, 2010I have had this WD "my book" ext. HD for about a year without a problem. Today after restarting the computer I got a notice, instead of the HD icon. On screen I got a box that said "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer" below this was 3 options. Initialize, ignore, eject". I was afraid that initialize would erase or reformat the drive so I pressed eject, I've tried many times but still the same thing. Has my ext. HD died? Should I click initialize? All my backup data & time machine, music,etc., is on this drive, I don't know what to do.

May 29, 2012I backed up some movies for the kids onto an external drive (USB without power cord). Now when I plug it in, it does not even show up. If I try to look at it with the disk utility it sayd the file system is not recognised. Last time I accesed the disk was under leopard. Could it be that the change to lion has cut off access now?I do hear the disk start up when it plugs in and I have not seen any strange history with this disk before switching to Lion. (A drive of the same make but bigger and with power cord plus USB still works from before and after Lion). Small disk is Freecom 1TB (pocet size), Large disk is 2TB also Freecom but with powerfeed seperately.

Jun 26, 20122012 iMac running 10.7.4 (lion). I have an external hard drive that I use for Time Machine. It has been working fine. Today, I turned it on to run Time Machine and the computer does not see the hard drive. I used a different cord to connect it. Still did not work. I tested both cords with a different external drive and they worked. So it is not the cords. The hard drive is getting power from its separate power cord. The hard drive knows when it is hooked up because the motor in the hard drive revs up when I plug it into the computer. However, the computer does not see it on the desktop or in finder.

Hardware :: Time Machine No Longer Works - Cannot Attach To External Drive?
Jun 20, 2010Hi all. Here's the deal. I have an Airport Extreme and and external 1 TB hard drive. When I first set up Time Machine on this set up a few years ago (partitioning the hard drive first) it worked great! After a few firmware "improvements" from Apple it no longer works. The computers cannot attach to the external drive via the Airport and when I force them to the Time Machine backups fail after about 15 minutes of backing up.
I'm considering buying a 1TB Time Capsule for our main router and my wife's MacBook backup (I'll just hard wire the old drive to my iMac) and using the older Airport as a WiFi repeater.
Problem is that I've read about all sorts of problems with the Time Capsules failing after about 18 months. So should I try the set up I'm considering or is there a fix for my current setup that I should try instead?

Jun 14, 2012I'm using a 500GB WD external hard drive to store a lot of data. It's been working fine, plugged into a USB hub. Suddenly, today, the drive stopped appearing when I plugged it in. I've tried plugging it in directly to the computer, it doesn't help. In system profiler, the USB port shows up as : Vendor Specific Device. The ID is confirmed as being from Initio, so I was rather dismayed. Upon trying the drive with another computer, same thing. The drive just shows up as an Initio device, not my external drive. I've rebooted and changed cables many times.

Jan 10, 2011We've got roaming accounts for our macs, but we get issues sometimes when students log in that the icon for the hard disk doesnt appeard on the desktop or in the finder. Weirdly related to this is when this happens neither firefox or safari can load any webpages. However, if students log out and log back in again the internet works fine. Im assuming when the hard disk isnt available, then firefox and safari cant access its preferences and necessary files properly, but what would be causing the hard drives not to mount/be visibile?

MacBook :: TV As External Display Suddenly Displaying Only Thousands Of Colors?
Oct 26, 2010It's been a while since I've hooked up my MacBook (late 2008 aluminium) to my TV (Samsung LE40M87BD), to use the latter as an external display for watching a film. Tonight I did it once again, and to my dismay the TV was displaying only thousands of colors. Maybe even only 256, I don't know. It's not a changed setting in my TV, as I've looked through its menu and couldn't find any option that would force it to display the millions it's certainly capable of.
After seeing this weird issue, I opened System Preferences. I looked in the Displays preference pane, but since some years Apple allows no manual control over the color depth anymore. So no luck there. I tried restarting, but that changed nothing. It outputs a correct 1080p 50Hz (PAL) signal, but the colors are just all wrong.
How can it be that my MacBook always used to perfectly display millions of colors on my TV, but now suddenly doesn't? I'm using Apple's own Mini Display Port to DVI adapter, and then a DVI to HDMI cable, which always worked problem free. So it's not the cables, I think. It has to be something in the hardware or software. I'm hoping it's software, otherwise it will be a more serious problem. I haven't tried BootCamp yet, but will do so tonight, just to see if Vista will output millions of colors.
OS X :: External Drive Won't Show Up On Desktop?
Sep 15, 2009My external drive has been used once. It was formatted, partitioned and files were saved on a mac. It showed up on a friends computer running Linux, and it showed up on my PC at home, but it hasn't been turned on since (about two weeks). This is where the problems begin. A few days ago I purchased a new enclosure for my HD (Nexstar 3.5). I took the HD out of it's old enclosure and put it in the new one (I needed the new enclosure for school purposes). I got to school today and plugged it in to the mac, but the drive didn't show up on the desktop. I tried to connect with Firewire 400, 800 and USB 2.0 but no luck with any of them (a USB key worked fine). Just to make sure it was working, I got home plugged it in to my PC and it showed up instantly.
From looking at other threads regarding this issue they all say I have to access the Utility menu. The only problem is since the mac I need to use is a school computer I can't access the Utility menu. It says I don't have authorization to use that menu, and won't allow me to go any further.
I don't know what to do from here. I can't reformat the drive because there is rather important info on there that hasn't been backed up yet. What can I do?

Mar 25, 2012I had a black screen of death moment and since then, I've had a few weird anomalies with my iMac. I ran disk repair while logged in, and it told me there was a problem. I restarted in restore mode, and when I repaired the drive, it found no problems. I don't believe it.Â
1. My external hard drives do not appear on the desktop. They are mounted, and I can see them when I open the finder and the disk utility, but they won't show up on the desktop like they used to. I have played with finder preferences shutting the option to see them off and on, but this doesn't change anything. Very strnage.Â
2. iTunes completely whacked out. It "restored" itself by magic. Now all the Date Added dates are March 23rd. All of my podcasts disappeared, and all my settings were reset. I have no idea what else I lost. I want to restore from a back up, but I don't know how to do just my iTunes.

Feb 24, 2010I moved mail from an exchange server to my computer to get around using to much space at work. I then dragged that folder to my desktop which created a .mbox file. When I try to move the .mbox file from my desktop to an external hard drive it wont move. a grey circle with an exclamation point appears. I tried doing it with Entourage close as well and got the same issue. Does anyone know the proper way for me to move the .mbox file from the desktop to the external hard drive?
