MacBook Pro :: Keep The SuperDrive Or Loose It For Other Options?
Oct 27, 2010
Seems to be a pretty hot topic right now, personally I want to loose it since I never use it, and would far rather have an external DVD drive for ripping the odd movie than lugging an external HD everywhere so I can access all my photos.

It is slighly loose, and I know it won't be a big deal to fix. I'm just scared that it will cost a lot to repair.

so I have recently purchased my pro and just noticed that if I pick it up at an angle the screen moves.
My 3 year old pc laptop does not do that. Is it just me being anal or is it a problem?
I just want to make sure because I have already taken my iphone4 back 3 times and my ipad. So I beginning to think its me!

On my 13 inch MBP, I just installed a new WD scorpio blue hard drive. I'm pretty sure I did everything right, but it wiggles around. What's wrong?

Each and everytime I put my Macbook Air 11 to sleep, it loses internet connection and I have to go into the Wi-Fi panel to rejoin my home network. Â It's quite annoying because I like to close my MacBook and hide it in the television cabinet when it's not in use. The first time I encountered this problem was when I left the MBA for an hour to download some big files, only to open it back up and find the download had not moved at all since I closed it. Â

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

I just ordered my first mac a few days ago online, and seeing that almost everyone takes advantage of the suposed 10h battery of the 13', I wonder if it gets slower when you are using the battery.
my current notebook (compal FL90) is considerably (much) slower when it is not powered to the grid especially if I'm running photoshop for casual editing.

I bought my Macbook Pro last september along with my Thunderbolt monitor.Everything was working until today (yes today was my first time bringing my Macbook Pro elsewhere) and when I moved it, the display shut off.then I realized that when I just move the Thunderbolt plug around it would turn on and off the display depending which side I would hold. would it be a problem with the Monitor cable? or a problem with the Macbook Pro itself? both are still under warranty, so I'm not worried, but it saves me the trouble of lugging either (especially the monitor) back to the Apple store.Â

Often my MPA and/or my friends MBP drop Internet connection! The only way to get it connected again is to restart it over and over again.

It's sort of come to my attention there's a few of us who are having *experiences* with a loose cover/latch. I wouldn't call this an *issue* at all, (yet) or it could be a problem with us being too picky. Either way, I'd like to know.

I just purchased a 13" MacBook Pro. It's the unibody one, from June. The Bottom panel, on the left side, under the wasd keys, for example, if I press under there, it makes a clicky noise, like the panel is loose. Does anyone else have this? Just want to make sure it isn't bad, that it's normal.

I have a fairly recent 17" MBP and I've discovered today that the headphone socket is a bit looser than I'm used to. My usual headphones click in as usual, but very little effort is required to pull them out. I have recently been using a client's cable to hook my MBP up to their speakers, and I have a feeling that the 3.5mm jack (which was a fairly tight fit) has somehow worn the socket.
Is it possible that using a slightly 'fatter' jack can damage a socket like that? I'm a bit wary of people plugging their cables into my laptop now, as I don't want to exacerbate the problem! Anyone else experienced this?

I have a problem concerning this part of macbook. Two bottom holding tabs - around the hinges area - of the display bezel (that part of plastic where the word "MacBook" is written ) can be so easily freed by single touching this plastic towards the keyboard.

I have seen a few videos about mastering and gave it a try myself. It can be done by clicking the master tab, then going to the Input 1-2 column setting and then clicking setting - mastering, etc. When I first did this a few weeks ago, there were many options such as hip hop mastering, electronic mastering, etc. Now, when I do so, I have different - much less enticing options and have no idea where the good ones went.

I installed my Pioneer Bluray drive in the second optical bay on my Mac Pro 2010. It works fine but when computer has been on for a little while it has lost connection with the drive entirely. I'm not sure when exactly. I mostly notice it when I try to open the tray and get no response. When i check in Toast, the app freezes due to the faulty connection and when checking for it on the computer info it's not there anymore. Anyone know why this is? One possibility I can imagine is a sleep/wake issue where this connection is somehow lost, but I never put the computer to sleep so this can't be it. I would hate to remove the Bluray drive entirely, but maybe I can switch places?

I'm looking to purchase 12 GB of Ram for my 2009 Octo Mac Pro. I've heard it is always better to go with 3 sticks of Ram rather than 4 with the 2009 Mac Pro, but is it better to go with 6 sticks rather than 3? What I'm looking to do is at 12 GB with either 4GB x 3 all on one side, or 2GB x 6 with 3 sticks on each side. I would prefer the 4GB sticks so I can upgrade later if needed to 24 GB. What I wanted to know is will I lose performance by only have 3 sticks of memory rather than 6 or does it not matter?

Is it possible for a sharp and sudden fall to disconnect the battery in the Macbook Air? My friend just emailed me--her husband dropped the MBA from the kitchen table to the floor (so just under 3'). She has an X icon where the battery icon should be and for the first few restarts, she's had to reenter wireless password information, as well as date/time. The MBA works fine when it's plugged in. But there's "a teeny dent in the upper left corner. Really tiny."

On my single 1.8 G5 PPC 10.4.11 about every 90 seconds my desktop goes blank and the current application window looses focus. It just started doing it so I did a full virus scan and found nothing. It doesn't matter if I am in the middle of making a selection or typing in doc and it stops if I logout and login as root--but then I keep getting keychain dialogs.

My Ethernet cord won't stay put and I can't keep connected unless I hold the cord in, otherwise it just slips out. I've got Apple Care, but no idea whether or not they'll fix this. (I've tried multiple cords, so I don't think that's the problem.) If not, how much am I looking at to get this replaced? (Normally, I'd just buy a router, but I have a wireless router at home, in the United States. I'm currently located in Tokyo, and would rather not have to buy a router here, since I can't really read the manual.)
Either way, how long am I looking at this taking? Depending on the cost, I may or may not go for getting it fixed, but if I do, I would like to know how long I can expect to be without my laptop, though. (I would ask at the Genius Bar, but my Japanese is shaky and my computer skills aren't much better.) Also, as a side note, my MacBook's got those little splinters again, and I'd like to get them fixed up.

Sorry for misspelling on title line. It should be --lose not loose. So it used to work just fine. I obviously did something wrong. Retracing my steps as follows:
1. Cloned my original single drive with iTunes and iPhoto data already on it. Clone worked same as original-just fine.
2. Then took new SSD-formatted and partitioned and did clean/hybrid minimal OSX install plus transferred applications, library and home onto new boot drive-about 28GB.
3. Then took larger SSD formatted and made 2 partitions-one for iTunes 160GB and 2nd for iPhoto 80GB.
4. Used drives in external enclosures to test. Could not get any iPhoto picture data to show up after unmounting and iTunes has the content, but after unmounting iTunes (along with iPhoto since on same SSD) all database (album artwork, etc) disappears when I reboot and go back to either Application-iTunes or iPhoto. What did I do wrong?

I tried to install Ubuntu (don't ask me why) onto my G5 dual core 2.5 Ghz PowerPC and after the installation not working as I had hoped (it worked fine on my netbook btw) I switched off the mac using a hard-shutdown from the power button as the whole system became completely unresponsive. I then tried to reboot and found that on my reboot rather than booting into the user screen as per usual I got the dreaded "circle with a cross through it". After fiddling about with a hell of alot of boot options I managed to get into the open firmware (option,o,f) terminal style screen up. from this screen it would seem that on my internal hard drive that pretty much all of my files are still on the hard drive. As I couldn't open them from the open firmware I was then told by a friend that I could run disk utility from the install cd provided with mac os x and I managed to find my internal hard drive using disk utility.
It seems as though during the ubuntu install I've deleted all partitions on the hard drive and therefore on the "partition" section under "current" it has no partitions set up and I have the option to set one up. It also gives me various different formating options; Mac os x Extended, Mac os x Extended (journalled), Mac os x Extended (Case sensitive journalled), Mac os x Extended (Case sensitive), unix file system and free space. I think it was originally on Mac os x Extended (journaled) but I'm not certain. Before I hit that re-partition button do u think that this is the right thing to do and if so which formatting option should I use? Presuming that the re-partitioning goes well, will I then have to re-install os x? Also will I loose all the data on the hard drive? Although I have the vast majority backed up there are still a few odd files that I wouldn't mind keeping if at all possible and obviously I didn't think to back up those hundreds of apps I've acquired over the years.
An embarrassed Dc
