MacBook Pro :: I5 - 5400 Totally Silent?

May 10, 2010

I hesitate and I went for the MBP I5 2,4 with 7200 HDD (because of the 100 euros ecology bonus and the education reduction) but now I obviously hear my HDD (wich is like a little fan noise by the way) and I checked from store the 5400 is very silent. I assume it s normal because the noise isn't high but i m really sensitive to it. do you all hear your 7200 HDD ? are the 5400 TOTALLY silent ?

OS X :: How Many Pins In Cf To Ide Adapter, Or In Ssd, To Make A G3 Imac Totally Silent

Jun 2, 2009

I have an old g3 imac, 500 mhz, 20 gb hd, and for some time i've been planning to make it totally silent. As you know it doesn't have fans and the only noise you can hear from it is from the hd.

I was thinking to do it by changing its 20 gb hd for a ssd. As prices are still quite high (even for small ones), maybe a 16 or 8 gb would do the job...

An other option i've thought of, is using a cf to ide adapter, and a cf card, because a 8 gb ssd is still about 50 or 60 $. For smaller ones, i think it's better to leave it as it is now, because at least i'd like to have some music and some movies in it!

MacBook Pro :: Most Silent 500GB Hard Drive

Jul 18, 2009

I have recently installed a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB drive in my 13" MacBook Pro and it makes a constant noise. The noise sounds like the fans are running louder than usual, but the noise clearly comes from the HDD and not the fans. So, I take it this is not normal, so what drive should I get? This is the second WD SB drive I've had and the first one was faulty as it vibrated a lot and you could feel it when resting your hand on the MacBook Pro. The current drive does not have that problem, but this noise is really annoying. What I want is a large capacity drive that is really quiet. The advantage of the WD is that it doesn't make the 'clunk' noies the stock HDD does when you move the MacBook Pro.

OS X :: Cannot Print HP Printer Silent - MacBook Running 10.5.8

Feb 25, 2010

I have a macbook running 10.5.8 and used to be able to print to the network connected (wired) HP Photosmart 6180 printer until recently. I installed a new driver as part of the trableshooting steps and while I can print a test page and see the status of the printer, I can't print from any applications like Word. I've tried all of the t-shooting steps I can find. What am I missing. The job acts like it's going to print and then the printer queue icon bounces with a caution symbol in front of it and the queue says connecting to print on port 631.... printer busy will try connecting again in <> seconds and there is nothing printing to it and the printer is silent.

I can turn the brightness down all the way, but it's still on, seems like a bit of a waste!

It will not turn on via the power button, there's no lights on the battery indicator on the side of the Macbook and nothing at all on the power adapter. I've checked the fuse in the plug and that's ok. Are there any internal fuses that could have blown in both the macbook and the power supply. I charged it before with no problems. MacBook :: GUI Totally Unresponsive - Computer Just Freezes

Jun 5, 2009

When I go back on the computer in the morning, the computer seems to choke on everything - anything I do gets me a beachball (click OK on the "you have been disconnected from AIM" dialog? Beachball. Trying to open a window in an app? Beachball. Trying to open a menu? Beachball). After a few minutes, the computer just freezes and so can't do anything about it. I had to hard reboot and the same thing happens after the start up. This happened a few times, but today was the worst - the computer just froze. I can move the mouse, but that's it. The GUI is totally unresponsive. I had to hard reboot to get out.

MacBook :: Aluminum Cover Almost Totally Demagnetized?

May 28, 2010

My macbook's magnet has died, or so it seems. It barely holds the top case and bottom case together, and does not "snap" shut until they are less than 7 mm apart. if i turn it upright the two side pop about 5mm apart and do not close until at less than about a 60 degree angle to the desk. Is there a way to remagnetize them, does this warrant a trip to the apple store, or do i just deal with it? The computer is 14/12 months old, manufacturing/purchase.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard And Trackpad Freezes - Totally Unresponsive

Apr 19, 2009

I have a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz from last Fall (not the new Unibody) that has a keyboard and trackpad that freezes, meaning it becomes totally unresponsive, with no warning for no reason. Either I carry an external keyboard and mouse, or, my only recourse is to hold the power button down and restart the machine. When it reboots, sometimes the keyboard works and sometimes it does not. If other folks have had or are having this problem, would you please step up and say so? I'm tired of Apple support people telling me they have never seen this problem when there are so many others who have written to the forum with the same or similar issues.

MacBook Pro :: Totally Blank Screen After Sound When Powered On

Dec 12, 2014

When I power on, my macbook pro does nothing (blank screen) after the sound.

System:

-Macbook Pro Retina 13' (Mid 2014) 256GB SSD, i5, 8Gig RAM
-Yosemite (10.10)

I tried to install Windows 8.1 using bootcamp assistant on Yosemite. After installing Windows 8.1, it asked me to restart.

When I restarted it stuck on blank screen. I've heard the startup noise but nothing happened. I tried many startup key combinations such as; Command(Alt), cmd+R,cmd+V,T, but the screen is always blank. Although the screen light is, on the screen is totally blank.

I did resetting SMC, and also I did cmd+alt+P+R (I've heard 4 times startup sound) but the screen is always blank. Nothing happens. I can only shut down by pressing the power button for 4 seconds. As a result when I power on, I hear the sound but nothing happens. Nothing on the screen.

What I did before was: The system is a brand new mac. I bought it 1 week ago.

1- I tried to install windows 8.1 using bootcamp. But failed. Because windows installer gave me an error that windows can not be installed on GPT partition.(I have also MacBook Air and MacMini with bootcamp Windows 8.1 working fine.)
2- Then I rebooted using Alt key then booted to MacOSX and deleted the windows part and many combinations. But failed. The error was always the same GPT error.
3- I reinstalled Yosemite tried all the steps but failed with the same error (GPT error)
4- We had another same macbook pro. And we could install windows 8.1 easily.
5- I compared the two machines in windows setup. The problematic mac had first partition labelled EFI.
6- Then after a few hours. I tried to install again. And saw that the EFI label was gone!. But I don't know how this is happened.
7- I was happy and started to install windows. After installing the system gone!!.

IMac :: Silent Seagates In I5?

Nov 22, 2009

In other threads in the last few days, you might have noticed my frustration boiling over with the "chugging" sound of the Seagate drive in my i5. I exchanged the computer at the Apple Store but seeing how so many other people were reporting the same "rumbling" sounds, I hesitated for a couple of days before opening the new computer's box. I was considering returning it unopened for a refund and waiting a month or more before buying a new one, in case the annoying problem was sorted in a future batch. But I gave in and opened it Saturday... and I'm mighty pleased I did! My heart sank a bit when I saw it contained a Seagate as before I'd been hoping for a Western Digital but after using the replacement i5 for a few hours, I can report that this is undoubtedly the quietest drive I've had in any Mac. all I've noticed is the very lightest whir when coming out of sleep. I have to put my ear right up to the computer to hear any other sounds at all. I haven't stressed the drive yet (no games or major projects), but after some time on the web, playing back music files, watching a DVD, a quick bit of photo retouching and copying some CD tracks to the desktop and editing them in Peak Pro, everything has been noiseless. So obviously I'm happy and if things stay this way, I'll be overjoyed. To those with a noisy Seagate in their i5, and who are hesitating to exchange it because there might not be an improvement, I really do suggest you do NOT accept it as normal or unavoidable I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that the Seagate drive I have on this i5 (ST31000528ASQ) is the most silent I could wish for. And so far, I've seen no screen issues or any other problems. I hope I'm not talking too soon, but as of this minute, I have a computer that fully lives up to the expectations I had at the outset.

I've heard manufacturers say the difference between the two doesn't in any way affect battery life.

MacBook Pro :: Upgrading HDD (500 GB) 5400 RPM

Sep 16, 2009

I think I am gonna buy my MacBook Pro 13" in the coming weeks. It will be the 2.5Ghz model... I see that its cheaper, if I upgrade the HDD myself. As for Desktop HDD, I normally buy Seagate or Samsung. Do they also make good 2,5" HDD or should I get something else? (Looking for 500GB) I've also heard good things about "WD Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT".

And can I use a 500GB 7200rpm drive with the 13" model(heat problems)? because apple only gives you the option to choose between 5400rpm HDD... 5400rpm is fine for me, but just wanna know. Last question, do you guys think Apple will make any kind of updates before next year? This will be my first Apple notebook.

MacBook Pro :: 5400 Rpm Versus 7200 Rpm HDD?

Jan 27, 2008

As a lot of people on these forums are, I am waiting for the next updated MacBook Pro. I want to get the fastest hard drive I can, but I want to ask the people who use the 7200 RPM HDDs if they can notice a difference, and if so how beneficial is it? Its really not a problem to pay the 250 for the 200GB 7200 option (and I do want to do that thru Apple because I want my hard drive under warranty) but I do recall hearing complaints that the 7200 RPM is louder, etc. So here is the basic question. How much faster is the 7200 and is it worth the upgrade? For background, I do Visual Effects/3D Animation. I use the Mac Pro for most of that and will sometimes use the MBP for that kind of work.

MacBook Pro :: 15' I7 - 5400 RPM Or 7200RPM Difference?

Apr 17, 2010

I've come to the conclusion that I will be opting for the 15" i7 MBP, after originally wanting to go for the 13' (due to lack of ix processor and such).

My dilemma is that I want to purchase the MBP through Bestbuy/Futureshop, mainly so I can go on a payment plan of around $100 per month, rather than dishing out $2000+ in one shot.

The issue with this is i am unable to BTO my MBP, so I will be stuck with the 5400RPM HD. Is it really that much of a difference from the 7200RPM HD? I'm used to a 7200RPM HD on my imac, so I don't want to feel any slowdowns.

Also, on my 20' early 2009 iMac, I notice that I need to turn my brightness down to about 3/16 (can't really explain it any other way. i guess this would be good with the MBP, as i'd get longer battery life, haha) or else i'll get a headache fairly easily after about 30-45 mins of use. Would the matte option help with the headaches?, as I assume the glossy screen is part of the cause for the headaches on my imac. I had originally returned the 24' imac i purchased and went for the 20' because the screen was too large.

So I am somewhat torn between going for the 15' i7 from a reseller, or just biting the bullet and ordering through the apple site.

Also, what brand/model hard drives do Apple put in MBP's?

MacBook Pro :: 5400 Versus 7200 HDD?

Aug 4, 2010

I'm considering upgrading the stock 5400 RPM Hitachi drive in my macbook pro to the Seagate momentus XT (7200 RPM) hybrid drive. I'm curious about the experiences of those who may have done a similar upgrade:

1. Is there a noticeable difference in performance? I seem to do a lot of waiting for the HDD in my day to day usage and I suspect the increased spindle speed will be helpful.

2. Any noticeable tradeoff on battery life (>~10% or so)?

3. Should I expect an increase in heat or vibration?

Finally, for those using the momentus XT I've been reading about issues with the dreaded beachball waiting for the drive to spin up. This lag would obviously defeat the purpose of upgrading and I'd like to hear about any personal experiences in this regard with the drive.
