View 4 RepliesI'm looking for a way to connect an external bus-powered Firewire 800 hard drive (Glyph Portagig 800) to an iMac which only has Firewire 400 ports, and still powering the drive through just the Firewire connector.
All I've found are Firewire 400 to 800 adapters, allowing Firewire 400 peripherals to be connected to computers having only Firewire 800 ports. I need the opposite of course.
Where can I get such adapters, and without sacrificing bus-power?
I'm looking to set up a 4+ drive external eSATA raid system (likely raid5). My biggest need is quiet. I've tried 2 boxes thus far including the 4big quadra that was supposed to be engineered for noise, but it had an annoying fan speed fluctuation and was actually much louder than my mac pro. I have a drobo and that is also too noisy. I'm wondering of anyone knows of a box or other option that is either fanless (ideally) or has one large super quiet fan.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI am looking for a 2TB HDD to add to my 3rd and 4th bay. They will be used for storage and backup only and need to be as silent as possible. I was looking at the 2TB caviar green. Is this a good choice? Is it a lot less noisy compared to a caviar black or blue? [URL]
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB drive in my 13" MacBook Pro and it makes a constant noise. The noise sounds like the fans are running louder than usual, but the noise clearly comes from the HDD and not the fans. So, I take it this is not normal, so what drive should I get? This is the second WD SB drive I've had and the first one was faulty as it vibrated a lot and you could feel it when resting your hand on the MacBook Pro. The current drive does not have that problem, but this noise is really annoying. What I want is a large capacity drive that is really quiet. The advantage of the WD is that it doesn't make the 'clunk' noies the stock HDD does when you move the MacBook Pro.
View 14 Replies View RelatedHas anyone here have any success using an external USB drive (2.5 or 1.8 small drives) thru a hub with the Air?
I know I could use a powered hub but I hate taking and messing about with additional power supplies when I travel.
does anyone know of a specific model HD that works with out needing to connect directly to the one USB port but thru the hub?
What is the best portable HD that can be powered from the MBA's USB hub without a power cable.
View 16 Replies View RelatedTo get my Multimedia-Data off my MBP i5 SSD I am looking for a small, 1 2,5" hdd enclosure that is FW-800 powered. I was unable to find anything in the forums nor in the buyers guide about this. Any recommendations or tests?
I am looking for something well designed if possible (imho like the LaCie Little Big Disk Quadra, which has two hds (double the power comsumption) and is too big).
I think I have found a bug in Finder where I cannot copy large files from a bus powered USB external. I get this error:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "..." could not be read or written (Error code -36)"
I think I have eliminated hardware as an issue:
1. The problem is repeatable (and always happens) on my Intel Macbook Pro, Intel Mac Mini and G4 Mac Mini
2. The problem happens whether I have formatted the external as HFS+ or NTFS (I can't use FAT32 for files over 4GB, e.g. VMWare disk images)
3. I can copy the files off the external with my Windows Vista machine (mostly dormant these days) and an XP laptop (I use for work), using Explorer.
4. The same problem happens with two different external enclosures (An Xtatix Portadrive and a Beyond Micro mobile Disk). I have also tried 3 different 2.5" drives in these enclosures.
5. If I boot my Macbook Pro into Vista using Bootcamp, I CAN successfully copy the files using Explorer.
6. I CAN also copy the files OK if I use Terminal and the 'cp' command (it works for all 3 machines)
7. I have NO problems with large files and Finder if I use a powered external with 3.5" drives via USB or Firewire (HFS+ or NTFS) on any of the Macs.
As you see, I think I've been pretty thorough. It seems as though Finder must be at fault when used with a bus powered USB external.
I should also mention that all 3 of my Macs are on Leopard 10.5.3, though I did also boot a my Intel Mac Mini into Tiger with the same result (Finder failed, 'cp' worked).
I have reported the problem to Apple, but wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue...and hey, a solution would be a great bonus!
I have a 2009 Mac Mini connected to a 22" LG monitor via Mini-DVI port and it's also connected to a 50" Pioneer Plasma (in the next room) via Mini-Displayport. Everything works perfect except that when I turn off the Pioneer Plasma, my mouse can still scroll over from the LG monitor to the Plasma.
I've also noticed that my screensaver is laggy even when the Plasma is turned off (usually that happens when it's drawing the screensaver on both screens) so it must still be sending a video signal out of the Mini Displayport.
I am looking at some OWC external drives to use with time machine on my new iMac. Is it better to go with a bus powered drive or one that has it's own power supply? I like the idea of only having one cable back there to keep with the clean look of the iMac but will go with an AC adapter if need be. Also I have a 1 TB hdd and only using a fraction of it right now. Do I need to go with a 1 TB ext hdd or can I save money with something smaller? Thanks.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was thinking that if i bought an external MOBILE hard drive (un-powered) i could take it with me sometimes when i need it in UNI (in Lectures where there is no power source to plug drive in), but also attach it to the mac and since it is un-powered and mobile time machine will work without needing external power.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs I am looking around at all the usb 2.5" drives I have laying around, I was wondering if there is a limit to the number of bus powered drives that the Mac Mini could run at one time.
I have never run more than one self powered drive on a computer before - so I was wondering if there was a limit that the Firewire/USB bus power can support.
Ideally I would love to be able to run one bus powered firewire 800 drive, and three usb bus powered drives - I'm just not sure if that is possible or advisable...
In other threads in the last few days, you might have noticed my frustration boiling over with the "chugging" sound of the Seagate drive in my i5. I exchanged the computer at the Apple Store but seeing how so many other people were reporting the same "rumbling" sounds, I hesitated for a couple of days before opening the new computer's box. I was considering returning it unopened for a refund and waiting a month or more before buying a new one, in case the annoying problem was sorted in a future batch. But I gave in and opened it Saturday... and I'm mighty pleased I did! My heart sank a bit when I saw it contained a Seagate as before I'd been hoping for a Western Digital but after using the replacement i5 for a few hours, I can report that this is undoubtedly the quietest drive I've had in any Mac. all I've noticed is the very lightest whir when coming out of sleep. I have to put my ear right up to the computer to hear any other sounds at all. I haven't stressed the drive yet (no games or major projects), but after some time on the web, playing back music files, watching a DVD, a quick bit of photo retouching and copying some CD tracks to the desktop and editing them in Peak Pro, everything has been noiseless. So obviously I'm happy and if things stay this way, I'll be overjoyed. To those with a noisy Seagate in their i5, and who are hesitating to exchange it because there might not be an improvement, I really do suggest you do NOT accept it as normal or unavoidable I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that the Seagate drive I have on this i5 (ST31000528ASQ) is the most silent I could wish for. And so far, I've seen no screen issues or any other problems. I hope I'm not talking too soon, but as of this minute, I have a computer that fully lives up to the expectations I had at the outset.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI got a new iMac i7 8g ram. So far, it has run flawlessly. I've gotten pretty busy with it...and still there is no indication that there is any active cooling. The back of the computer gets a little hot, but not real. Should there be a fan running? And, where could I check?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI hesitate and I went for the MBP I5 2,4 with 7200 HDD (because of the 100 euros ecology bonus and the education reduction) but now I obviously hear my HDD (wich is like a little fan noise by the way) and I checked from store the 5400 is very silent. I assume it s normal because the noise isn't high but i m really sensitive to it. do you all hear your 7200 HDD ? are the 5400 TOTALLY silent ?

I installed a new driver as part of the trableshooting steps and while I can print a test page and see the status of the printer, I can't print from any applications like Word. I've tried all of the t-shooting steps I can find. What am I missing. The job acts like it's going to print and then the printer queue icon bounces with a caution symbol in front of it and the queue says connecting to print on port 631.... printer busy will try connecting again in <> seconds and there is nothing printing to it and the printer is silent.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an old g3 imac, 500 mhz, 20 gb hd, and for some time i've been planning to make it totally silent. As you know it doesn't have fans and the only noise you can hear from it is from the hd.
I was thinking to do it by changing its 20 gb hd for a ssd. As prices are still quite high (even for small ones), maybe a 16 or 8 gb would do the job...
An other option i've thought of, is using a cf to ide adapter, and a cf card, because a 8 gb ssd is still about 50 or 60 $. For smaller ones, i think it's better to leave it as it is now, because at least i'd like to have some music and some movies in it!
i need the commands to distribute some applications to MAC devices :
- Adobe Creative Suite 3 and 4
- Microsoft Office for Mac 2008
- Fotostation client
- Preference changes for Adobe suite.
- Apple Scripts/Applemounter deployment
From one moment to another my itunes turned silent while playing a song. It still shows that the songs are playing, however there is no sound. it is not my macbook which is on mute because music on youtube etc still works..

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently bought a MacBook Pro (10.9.4) with a 128 Gb solid state drive. My intended backup strategy is to have all my documents on an external 1 Tb USB3 drive (i.e, not in the MacBook Pro) and to back up that drive AND my Macbook (system, applications, mail etc) to another, powered 2Tb drive. I’m assuming I’ll have to partition the 2Tb drive first, by the way.

I'm getting this softly high pitched sound at idle. I did not have this sound before until this month. I bought this thing in January 2010, yes this year. Does anyone know what could be going on? It does not make that sound when I'm using it, it's only at idle. I can even hear it when I'm lying in bed since this is in my room. Check out my signature to see what I have.
It sounds like a idle fan issue? The computer works fine, but it's just that high pitched noise that bothers me. I should take it to the apple store huh?
I decided to keep my current set up and use my mac mini as a desktop that mostly works as a media server like set up that holds my media for my apple TV if I run out of space on the ATV and later use it as a home theater computer when i get another HDTV. this is just fyi on why I have my mbp and mac mini still yet instead of having only one computer...
if you'd be so kind...I've had my iMac for almost a year, but have yet to make the big switch totally.
I am getting an external drive today to store music, photos, etc. Simply enough to set them up and have items go directly to it instead of internal drive? I know it is, just want peace of mind
MY big ?...I have lots of music on itunes on my pc...can I take it off the pc and out onto the external to use with my imac? Still have to do two separate partitions, or? Or, easier to get all my music onto ipod, then use Expod to download to the external? Once it is all on the external, how do I call it up, easily? itunes automatically search to play music from it and save new music to the external or do I have set it up or assign things differently?
In other words... I have moved my music library to the external hard drive, as per an earlier thread I read here on the forums. It worked like quite well. Now that it is working perfectly, I am having a hard time leaving well enough alone. It is never a good idea for me to think too much...Can itunes be installed and run on/from an external hard drive? If so, how?
View 15 Replies View RelatedI love my iMac but the one thing I hate is that it only has 4 USB ports...
I have 3 USB 2.0 External Drives.... My digital camera, iPhone, iPad, Kodak Zi8, Elgato Eye, and Harmon/Kardon Sound Sticks... and a few other USB devices...
Can anyone suggest a good Powered USB hub? I have this little 4 port laptop USB hub.. right now, but my external keep disconnecting..
Imac, osx Leopard. Was working fine for many months (except for the 27 vertical lines but won't bore you with that), I bought a powered usb2 hub to power a usb hard-drive, when connecting the hub after a few minutes the Internet connection stopped and does so any time I connect the hub, now without the hub being connected the internet stops and starts every few minutes making it impossible to do any work. Other macs in the house are unaffected (s I'm having to write this on a minimac). Has something damaged the imac for good ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI occasionally have trouble charging my iPhone via my iMac USB ports. I plug in the iPhone, the screen indicators change to show that the phone is charging (green battery indicator and the lightning bolt symbol). However, when I come back to the phone several hours later, the charge indicator hasn't advanced any. For example, if the indicator showed half-full when I plugged it in, it remains half-full.
The iMac does go to sleep a few minutes after I leave it, but sleep has never precluded an iPhone battery charge on my MacBook, and most of the time it works on the iMac.
Is there anything, besides shutting down a computer, that causes a USB port to unpower while the iMac is sleeping? Does it matter whether I am logged in or simply at the login screen?
