MacBook Pro :: How To Close Application Completely When Clicking Red Button
May 23, 2012
I'm a long time windows/Ubutnu user who have recently migrated to Mac OS X and running 10.7.4. One thing which I'm unable to get used to is that while the red button closes a window, the program will remain open until you quit the application using the Menu Bar. One option to bypass it is use the key combination ctrl-q but by doing that all the instances of that program opens up the next time I open that application. Is there a way out?
When I try to close safari using the red dot at the top left hand side of the screen instead of the window closing it opens a new blank safari window. Infact the same happens when I click the amber and green buttons also.
I recently have had to system updates (last night and today). Last night I also had a problem that has fixed itself where pressing the command + Q buttons would not clos safari and the "Quit safari" in in the safari drop down was greyed out. As I say the later isue has fixed itself after I force closed and the updates loaded on. Not sure if the two issues are connected.
I have a 1 year old MB and I've noticed recently that the button on the touch pad no longer has a physical click to it. It still works but it feels (perhaps) mushy. Could this be the start of a bigger problem?
Every now and then It takes a while for the "close" button to register the click, it senses the mouse over as the button changes to show the X, but clicking does nothing, i have to wait a few seconds, retry.. then it works. Anyone else have this?
So everytime I try to turn my macbook pro off by clicking the shut down button it does the usual turning all software off and then going to the desktop with the dashbord going away and the little circle coming up but it just stays like that forever until I force it off by pressing down the power button. What should I do? I just got this laptop around 6 months ago
For people to start getting use to not having a button with the track pad and only learn to use multitouch like how it is on iphone?I realize now that i turn on trackpad clicking that i just about NEVER use my think click button. Also the click button is so small i'm thinking they did it on purpose so it'll force us to use multitouch.
The whole typing level surface (track-pad, palmrests, keyboard) are all acting like they're the trackpad button. If I rest my palms on the palmrest, it's registered as a click. If I press the keys any harder than super lightly as I type, it's a click. The issue is much worse when my laptop is on my lap as opposed to a hard flat surface. Sometimes, I seem to lose total control. I'll be using the trackpad to navigate around my monitor, and it will act as though I'm constantly clicking (following links, dragging icons around, etc). It's getting REALLY irritating. I know I'll most likely end up having to make the journey to the Apple Store, but I thought I'd try here first just to see if anyone at least has an idea of what could be causing this.
title says it all really. Every time I touch, even lightly the button below the trackpad I get a double click. It's making it impossible to highlight text and windows automatically go into the dock if I try to move them. Is it something serious or could I just try and fix it by dismantling and cleaning it? I'd rather not take it apart, to be honest.
I have a buddie who has an iMac and if he closes a program by pressing the red 'x' in the upper left corner
it closes the app completly, i have to close the app then go to the finder bar and press on the name of the open app and go down to quit in order for it to quit completly, how do you set it up to close completly by pressing the 'x'?
(example: if firefox is open, i hit the red 'x' and the program closes, but in the finder bar on top of the screen, it shows the name still and in the dock bar it shows a little white speck under the app and it is not closed completely.
I am a first-time Mac user and have a question about quiting/closing programs.
When you click the red button/X in the upper left corner of a program, is there a setting in Lion to make the program actually close/quit instead of having to go to the menu at the top and click Quit?
This was annoying on a windows mobile phone - it is still annoying on the iMac and I could not find any settings in System Preferences to change how clicking on the red button closes a program.
I don't know if any of you have this problem, but often when I try to close an app, and I click the red button in the upper left corner of the screen, i somehow click the minimize button, causing the screen to go into the lower right corner of my screen (dock is on the right side) Is there any way to move the three buttons further away from each other or something else, like increasing sensitivity, whatever? Because it's annoying as hell. This is one of my only problems with leopard, that I keep hitting the yellow button.
I recently found that the cause for my macbook pro hanging on shut down was due to Kaspersky running in the background. Because quiting it before shutting down every time is annoying is there a way to automate the quitting of an application when I request my computer to shut down?
I have the white MacBook, I've had it about 2 years now. I was wondering if maybe I have too much on my hard drive and that is why my most commonly used applications have suddenly begun to close mid-use. I've never had this problem before and have recently uploaded quite a bit of music/photos to my MacBook, so it seems to be the only logical explanation for it? Or, I don't think I could've gotten a virus because 1. I'm very cautious about the files I download and 2. I don't think Macs are susceptible to most viruses. I could be wrong, though.
Nonetheless, does anyone know of any solution for this?
When I try to shut down the computer, I get an error message that the mail application is preventing the shutdown. I have tried to manually close the mail application, but it won't close.
Since a month or 2 my internet, safari & firefox are slow. I tried lots of stuff, dns, had some helpfull youtube turtorial tips, but still I dealing with the same problem. When internet is loading a new, never visited, website or a youtube video it keeps loading until I click the airport button. When I click the airport button the site is loaded straight away and internet is real fast. Thing is, I just keep on clicking.
I'm trying to buy more episodes for a show (Supernatural S9 if it makes any difference) and I try to click the SD button, but it doesn't change anything. I've only bought a few episodes of this show separately instead of a season pass because I've already seen several episodes, therefore I can't download them from cloud. the HD button next to the title and season of the show disappears after clicking the button, but nothing else changes. I tried signing out of my account and trying it on my sister's, and the switch between them worked perfectly fine? could this be an error with my account? I've tried restarting iTunes and my laptop, and nothing is changing.
This is what happens when I click the maximize button. The windows becomes almost full size, but makes it so there's a little bit space around the window.
I think I did a control click on an application trying to make an alias following a webtip and now I have a blue dot when the app is highlighted, or if I'm not clicked on the app it shows up highlighted blue. what does this mean and how do I get rid of it? I tried control clicking the item again and it's still there. It's just annoying to look at. Ideas? I googled it, I'm sure it's some Leopard feature but I dunno what it is,

This just recently started to happen. Safari and Mail disappear everytime I quit the applications and I have to relaunch from launchpad. I have the checked the option "keep in the Dock".
I am running Mac OS X version 10.7.4 on an iMac7,1 and have been for a while.
I can't seem to find any current information in the Apple Discussion Forums. Probable something really simple for a really annoying occurance.
I just deleted yahoo messenger from my computer by going to finder then applications and throwing it in the trash. But when i reinstalled it by downloading from the website it remembered some info from before? How can I totally delete yahoo messenger?
In Mavericks... Is there any way to close the windows of application (when quitting - ie System Preferences => General) BUT not have this affect the finder application.
I want the windows I have opened in the finder to remain opened, but everything else to close upon quitting
Is there a way for a Microsoft Office application to auto-quit when you close the last window of it opened? For example, when I close the last window opened of Microsoft Word, the icon sits in the dock with the indicator light still on underneath, waiting for me to manually quit it. I know many other apps auto-quit once they are closed, just wondering if this is an option for Microsoft Office for Mac?
Why some of my application cannot be open by double clicking the Icon ? and I also tried by right clicking it, the Open it< but still won't work. I tried this with Onyx, photoshop and vuze application.
