MacBook Pro :: Hidden App Running (Indexing) Affecting Drive?
Jun 5, 2012
I have a 15" MB Pro, 2.66, 8gb ram, Intel Core i7 processor, OS 10.6.8, a year or so old.I'm having trouble with a Lacie d2 Quadra v3 7200rpm drive. At first I thot it was the drive but now believe it's something with the mac since when hooked up to my old MB Pro I don't have this problem. When copying from the Lacie to another drive and sometimes when unmounting I get a message saying it can't unmount because it is in use by another application. But I am not running any other application, at least not knowlingly.
I would guess that a program(s) is accessing the drive without my knowledge (and perhaps performing indexing operations?) and I would like to find out which program(s), and how I can stop it.When I go to Preferences>Accounts>Login Items I see VMWare Fusion Helper (unchecked), and iTunesHelper and CNQL2405_Button Manager (both checked). Could any of these be responsible? I wonder if iTunes being used to backup my iPhone has created a problem, or separately if iCloud, Life or iSync or another app that could index might be creating issues.

I recently purchased a MacBook Air 13" 128GB. I've owned a first gen iMac. I currently own a iPad, a iPod Classic 80 GB, and a iPod touch. I live in Colorado and use Comcast cable internet. Recently we've had some problems with internet speeds. I decided to go to speedtest.net and test our internet speed. I was troubled to see how slow our connection was.
Under 10 and sometimes under 5. The trouble seemed to be only on Saturdays. After many tests w/ speedtest.net I decided to compare the MacAir to my wife's PC. I was a bit surprised to see the PC get more than double the speed of the Mac. After comparing speeds with some other peeps on another forum I frequent it seems the MacAirs and iPads download information much slower than PCs and full blown Macs.
My question is: Does flash drive memory download information slower than the traditional hard drives found on PCs and larger Macs?

I have my external HDD partitioned for my Media storage and for Time Machine. Unfortunately, my mac is having problems and I want to back up my computer to reinstall Lion. Problem is...Time Machine is also not backing up anymore (last backup was 2 months ago). So I want to erase the Time Machine volume of my HDD so I can use SuperDuper to backup my hard drive...but of course I don't want to erase the media partion. So...using Disk Utility, I can just erase the Time Machine partion (volume) of the HDD and leave the Media portion intact, correct? I would hate to erase the Time Machine volume and find out the Disk Utility also erased all my music and movies too!

I just found a 'hidden' process running in Activity Monitor. If it weren't for the indication of 64 bit under virtual memory, I wouldn't have noticed anything. This is the first time that I've ever seen a 64 bit process running with root privileges. On top of that, it's hidden. Whenever I try to quit or even force quit it, it comes back. Should I be concerned? I'm little worried right now. This wouldn't have any relation to the sudden loss of several fonts that occurred a few days ago, would it? (I lost Century Gothic)

Whenever I add a new external drive (be it for regular use or just backup) the OS will read the entire drive to create an index. With smaller drives this was just an irritation of 20-30minutes ..but now I have a RAID5 with 4 2TB drives. This will be 4-5hours of non stop noise ?
Is there a better way to do this on a schedule ..say use the drive now and then set it for indexing over night ?

I wondering if anyone knows of a problem that will index my external hard drive and burned DVDs so that I can search/browse their contents even when I don't have them mounted on my Mac. I'm in the process of archive a lot of old work and I know at one point I saw a program that would index CDs and DVDs, but I can't remember the name and searching hasn't turned anything up yet.

I have an iomega network drive on which I store my itunes library. However spotlight does not find any files on this drive.
I have tried mdutil -i on /Volumes/Network drive and mdutil -E
It says it has turned on indexing, but it still will not find any files. Does anyone know how to make spotlight index this network drive, or recommend an app that will allow me to search network drives

I just added a 1 Terabyte drive for both backup and regular file storage. I partioned the drive so I would have a volume purely for backup. Backing up to the drive was taking forever, i searched and found index is the problem. I also found a couple ways to stop indexing. I utilized the touch function, but the .metadata_never_index doesn't seem to take at all. I have since utilized the sudo mdutil function for just the backup volume and this works. However..... Will this permanently leave indexing off on this volume? The drive backs up my laptop so it's disconnected frequently. Also does anyone have a guess to why the never index function didn't work? The syntax looked to be perfect.
touch /Volumes/Obsidianice Backup/.metadata_never_index
Whenever i ran the ls function
ls -a /Volumes/Obsidianice Backup
to check it it returned
No such file or directory

I upgraded my harddrive this weekend. Here is how I did it:
1.) replaced the hard drive in my laptop
2.) Loaded Leopard onto the new hard drive
3.) Connected my old drive in an enclosure as an external drive
4.) Used the migration assistant to migrate my profile and files from the old drive.
Everything is good, but spotlight doesn't work well. It misses tons of stuff that IS there. I think the drive needs to be re-indexed?

I'm using a my book western digital nas drive for my time machine backups and time machine has been stuck on indexing for days. I saw some solutions in other threads, however on the my book the backup partition of the drive is private, locked, or hidden? and I have no idea how to get into that area of the drive if I was going to apply any of the solution I have previously seen...

I partitioned my hard drive to in order to have an option of running tiger or leopard and thought that the partition would wipe my hard drive clean and was acceptant of this; however, I recently noticed that my disk space is running dangerously low and have discovered that all the crap I had on my hard drive before is still lingering in the depths of my hard drive. Anyways, is there any way I could just completely wipe my hard drive because I have a complete mess of duplicate files and songs that I don't want to even bother sorting through.

I have some files on a NTFS drive (from a Wiindows 7 PC), the files were hidden. So ... I followed these instructions:
Batch FileXamine [URL] Choose your drive- on the right panel chose “privileges”- chose “preset” –> “public share”(which is chmod 755 for folders and does a chmod 644 on files)- Check “apply to enclosed..”- Apply Permissions To enable hidden files/folders in finder windows:Open FinderOpen the Utilities folderOpen a terminal windowCopy and paste the following line:defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YESPress returnNow hold ‘alt’ on the keyboard and right click on the Finder iconClick on Relaunch(DID NOT RUN) to revert backdefaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO (DID NOT RUN)
After I applied the above I could see the folders and files, although the folders appear as light blue, not the usual blue folders we in OS X, and the files are lighter as well.
When I select 'get info' under 'sharing and permissions' I see 'you can only read', no other options are available.
However, I am able to transfer the files to my desktop, although they remain light blue. Also, when I select 'get info' (on the transferred files on the desktop) under 'sharing and permissions' 'my user name' 'read & right' is enabled. But the folders still appear blue (and the files are much lighter).
I assume if I run the Command: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
The folders and files will no longer be visible.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a hardware issue or a software one. I recently swapped out from a PC to a iMac. I wanted to keep all my old files so I pulled out the internal HDD and placed it in a HDD Enclosure and connected it via USB 2.0. Now the Mac recognized it and all seemed well, but a hidden folder I need access to doesn't show up on my drive. If it helps, this drive was the master drive on my old PC and the file I'm trying to locate was on the desktop.

I've had an iMac for just about a year and over time I guess I just didn't notice but the machine always ran very quietly. At the same time the back of the computer would heat up so bad that it would nearly burn my hand if I left it there. Well last week I decided to upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard and when I did the install failed and froze up the hard drive. I took the computer in to the apple store and they determined that it had to have a new hard drive installed because the old one (only a year old) had a physical malfunction (was broke). So anyway I have my iMac back and get it started up, backed up from time machine, and then finally get Lion istalled - and now all of the sudden I notice that the fans in the computer are CONSTANTLY blowing - I can hear them spinning and can hear the air venting out of the back of the computer - and the computer is STILL really hot on the backside of the screen.
So now I am wondering if the originial problem was the computer heating up and if that may have broken the otherwise good hard drive? Also now that I have a new hard drive - should I be concerned about the fans being on ALL the time? I mean they never go off. Even when I leave the computer for hours and come back to it and the screen is asleep the fans are STILL buzzing away at top speed. Here is the stats on the computer at the time that I'm typing this note - there are no other programs running than Firefox and Mail. Also - I don't know what the optical drive is exaclty - but if it's the DVD drive (superdrive) - there is nothing in the DVD disc drive

Updated to 10.9.4 today. Soon afterwards I plugged my TV into the HDMI port of my Mac. The monitor immediately went blank and even after I unplugged the TV, it remained so. I tried restarting via the Mac's on/off switch to no avail. Finally, I unplugged the electric cord from the Mac mini; replugged it in and was able to turn the computer on.

Anyone know of any drive indexing software for OS X? I have about 20 drives and have to mount and go through them all when searching for a file. On OS9 I have software that would index each of the drives contents and save it in a searchable database but cant find anything that will do this now. Maybe it is built in to OS X and I don't know it?

I'm assuming yes, but I thought I'd ask. Obviously I'd need to back up my windows side just in case and then wipe my MAC partition.

I have a 2007 mac pro running tiger currently. I'd like to upgrade to snow leopard, but I want to make sure that I'm not affecting the other drives on my computer. Currently I have all my apps on the main drive (the one that came from apple) and three other drives on the other bays. What is the best way of doing a fresh install without worrying about my other drives?
I was thinking of removing the three drives, do my upgrade and then slotting the drives back in, would my computer recognize these drives? Do I even have to take these drives out? I am also going to back up my main drive via super duper. If something happens during my upgrade, how can I clone my old drive data back?

I very recently bought a G3 iMac 600. The seller did everything right and presented me with a clean install of Panther. However he also partitioned the 40 Gb HD into 20 and 17 respectively, with the OS on the larger partition.
Since purchase, I've reinstalled Panther from my own retail disks, and updated to 10.3.9. All is well EXCEPT the second partition remains, I do not need it, and I will in due course want to use that space for applications, and other files.
How do I remove the second 17 Gb partition without affecting the primary 20 Gb one?

I've had Snow Leopard since the day it came out. And I installed it that same day. Since then Spotlight is constantly indexing and will not stop. I noticed about a week after installation when I went to use stoplight and it wouldn't let me because it was indexing. Now fast forward to today I still haven't fixed this problem because I never really needed to use it. So no I have the need, and I need to fix this problem. BTW I'm using a 13" aluminum Mac Book bought around June '09 the model right before the current 13" aluminum Mac Book Pro's

Not sure if this should be here but anyway. I am trying out Parallels to run Windows 7. I installed windows 7 on a partition of a second hard drive but couldn't get Windows to start up and finish set up so I went to parallels. Parallels is using the partition I created that contains Windows 7 of course. My problem is that I can't get my CD/DVD drive to eject when I press the eject button. This happens as soon as I launch parallels - from that point on the eject button has no effect. I installed parallels tools; I have sound and internet when using Windows but I have no way of ejecting the disk tray. Any suggestions. Is there an alternate command that can eject the tray like some other hot key or something? What am I missing?

I’ve got the locked edit in FCPX. 90+ min, 8000 clips.Timeline is set at 23.98, clips on the timeline are some 23.98, but mostly the BMCC 24p. No prob for FCPX. It plays with whatever you throw at it. The problem comes in when I’m trying to export OUT, because the other programs don’t like it. Like I’ve got to get my audio post engineer this AAF for ProTools out with X2Pro. X2Pro doesn’t support this "retiming" that FCPX does and spits out warnings for non-conformance. What to do? Change all the clips to 23.98 or change all the clips to 24p, or is there some other better/easier way to get that audio (with syncing video) out to ProTools?

I have a hard drive on my 2008 MacPro that's problematic and so I bought a new drive and installed Mavericks on it and am booting just fine on the new drive. There is however, one folder in the Library/Preferences folder that I need to copy over to the new drive. All the tricks for accessing the Library folder work great on the start up drive, but I can't seem to access the Library folder on the old drive (both drives in the MacPro as it has 4 drive bays), even though the drive will mount. How can I see that Library folder on the old drive? Note while I can mount the old drive, I can't boot to it.
