Hardware :: How To Remove The Second 17 GB Partition Without Affecting The Primary 20 GB One
Nov 26, 2008
I very recently bought a G3 iMac 600. The seller did everything right and presented me with a clean install of Panther. However he also partitioned the 40 Gb HD into 20 and 17 respectively, with the OS on the larger partition.
Since purchase, I've reinstalled Panther from my own retail disks, and updated to 10.3.9. All is well EXCEPT the second partition remains, I do not need it, and I will in due course want to use that space for applications, and other files.
How do I remove the second 17 Gb partition without affecting the primary 20 Gb one?
I'm unable to find out how I can create a primary partition on a USB stick using OS X (I could just go to my Windows or Linux machine and do it there, but it just annoys the hell out of me that I haven't been able to figure out how to do it on my Mac so far).
I want to make one partition of the USB stick bootable (to keep a Windows 7 installation CD image on it) and use the rest of the USB stick for a data partition, but while the Disk utility allows me to generate two paritions, I can't find a setting that allows me to specify that one of them is primary.
Getting OCZ SSD to install on MacPro 08 in second optical bay. Must have User files on separate drive due to SSD will barely hold system. I figured I'd have to clone my primary boot drive to spare partition, boot from clone, setup it up with User in other location from SysPrefs > Users > control click current user > advanced options, restart then dump items form User in order to have the drive sized for the SSD. Once the intermmediate tranfer drive was set up, clone it to the SSD and use as boot.
I tested clone before actuall data transfers. Problem is after switching User file location from the booted clone, restarting, but re-booting looks like clean install. No preferences showed up, missing all but stock apps in dock, desktop image back to clean install, printer needing registration.Tried advanced options again to locate User on same original boot drive, restart, same thing. I did not remove User files yet from the cloned drive which I was booting. Just switched location.

I used bootcamp, but the windows disk did not work. So now I have this windows partition that I have been trying for 30mins to delete and I cant do it. I been playing with it but I think I just made it worse.
I tried searching the boards already but I didn't get a clear answer I was looking for.
So I have an external harddrive with data already on (it takes up only 40% of the harddrive). Now, I want to partition the harddrive and use the new partition for a Time Machine backup of my Mac.
Now, here's the question; would I be able to delete the Time Machine partition in the future and still leave the external harddrive's data (the original 40% of data I had in the first partition?
I would like to install windows XP. But the error message comes as the following:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
I tried to install XP in the past and could not do it with OEM disc, so I removed the partition using bootcamp. Now, I try to create partition but the error message above appears.
Do I need to have external hard drive to take care of the problem?
I no longer need Windows and want to reclaim the space and restore my HD back to a single partition, but Boot Camp Assistant won't let me. It says "This disk appears to have been partitioned by another utility. It must be erased before installing Windows." and the "Restore disk to a single Mac OS partition option is greyed out? I know I used Boot Camp to created the partition, so why won't it let me remove it?
1) Will it matter if I have a Windows XP Home disc or Professional? 2) How would I go about COMPLETELY removing windows and its whole partition?
I am currently considering installing windows on my MacBook Pro, however I would like to know how to remove it completely, just in case I change my mind.
I realize this may be a stupid question but here goes... I have recently installed Windows XP with Boot Camp and now realize more than ever how much I hate XP and was wondering if it were possible to remove that partition all together from the hard drive, and I guess have it added back to my Mac OS side. I think i know the answer but just want to be sure.
The problem is with a mbp running Snow Leopard. I created a dual boot with win 7. I was playing around with the partitions, and at one point installed SL on both partitions, sure i did some other bone head moves that i can't remember. Now cannot remove the second partition. I think i may need a boot disk with a application to partition the HD from the disk?
If I wanted to reinstall Windows (currently using 32bit, want to upgrade to 64), I assume I would remove the partition, make a new one, and reinstall Windows from there. Now, will the same Product Key work if I did it like this? As far as I know, because the Product Key has already been used it won't let me.
I made a partition in my Tiger Macbook to install WIN. Now i want to delete the partition. Tried to do that with Boot Camp, and the application says it' done, but the partition is still there. Tried with Disk Utility, and I am not able to click the "Remove" button (as on the image).
Well it tarted when i wanted to install Unbuntu Linux dual booting on my MacBook aluminum. When I set up the install, it wrote 2 partitions of itself. Now i cant remove the partitions. I have check permissions and they are fine. I cant remove the original boot camp partition. I really need help so i can free up some space.
I cleared out all files of Windows I had on my Mac before I did any research. Maybe I thought for some unknown reason that is how you fix the problem - obviously not.
FYI, I did go through the whole bootcamp installation, divided my hard drive, what have you. I cannot delete the BC partition through BC Assistant, the option box is greyed out. I cannot adjust the partition size through disk utility because the minus and plus buttons are greyed out as well.
I had my hard drive partitioned via bootcamp to run windows vista. I use software at work that isn't supported by Mac (it is now, but our version is old and it costs 10k to upgrade yada yada yada). One night I was playing around with the time machine feature (had the macbook for three years now never touched it, wish i hadn't) and accidentally told the time machine to use the partition made by bootcamp for windows to back up my mac. Well this messed everything up. Now that partition is gone (windows) and that volume is now called time machine backups. I have used some threads in here to try and remove that and nothing seems to work (most of the threads are from 2007 to 2008).
What I need help with is removing that time machine volume so that I can run bootcamp again to reinstall windows. When I attempt to run bootcamp right now it says "This startup disk is not supported." When I restart and hold option only the mac hd is available to choose. I also use(d) VMware Fusion to run Windows.
So I'm using bootcamp to load up windows, but now I have run out of room on my Mac partition. I still have 30GB on my windows partition, and I haven't even used it ONCE! Honestly at this point I don't think I will ever need it....
But so my questions is, would there be any way to remove the windows partition completely without damaging my Mac side to allow for more storage? Or maybe just shrink the windows partition so that I can free up an extra 20GB or so?
My wife's macbook monitor is destroyed due to happy 2 year old. It won't be worthwhile to replace the monitor and it is not fixable without some expensive work being done on it, therefore I would like to use our TV as an external monitor and retire the macbook to being a mediia computer. I have connected it to the TV, and I see an empty desktop, as far as I can determine it looks like it is treating the TV as a secondary display - that the desktop is extended onto - so I cannot actually interact with the normal desktop. When I try to run things using keyboard shortcuts I hear some sounds of things starting, but I don't see anything on the TV.  So what I need to do is to have some way to tell it to treat the secondary display as the primary display. Â
I'm thinking about installing Windows 7 on my hard drive using Bootcamp. I'd like to know if in the future I decide to remove windows, am I able to remove the partition and revert back to the full hard drive space or not?
Updated to 10.9.4 today. Soon afterwards I plugged my TV into the HDMI port of my Mac. The monitor immediately went blank and even after I unplugged the TV, it remained so. I tried restarting via the Mac's on/off switch to no avail. Finally, I unplugged the electric cord from the Mac mini; replugged it in and was able to turn the computer on.Â
I have a 2007 mac pro running tiger currently. I'd like to upgrade to snow leopard, but I want to make sure that I'm not affecting the other drives on my computer. Currently I have all my apps on the main drive (the one that came from apple) and three other drives on the other bays. What is the best way of doing a fresh install without worrying about my other drives?
I was thinking of removing the three drives, do my upgrade and then slotting the drives back in, would my computer recognize these drives? Do I even have to take these drives out? I am also going to back up my main drive via super duper. If something happens during my upgrade, how can I clone my old drive data back?
I recently purchased a MacBook Air 13" 128GB. I've owned a first gen iMac. I currently own a iPad, a iPod Classic 80 GB, and a iPod touch. I live in Colorado and use Comcast cable internet. Recently we've had some problems with internet speeds. I decided to go to speedtest.net and test our internet speed. I was troubled to see how slow our connection was.
Under 10 and sometimes under 5. The trouble seemed to be only on Saturdays. After many tests w/ speedtest.net I decided to compare the MacAir to my wife's PC. I was a bit surprised to see the PC get more than double the speed of the Mac. After comparing speeds with some other peeps on another forum I frequent it seems the MacAirs and iPads download information much slower than PCs and full blown Macs.
My question is: Does flash drive memory download information slower than the traditional hard drives found on PCs and larger Macs?
Not sure if this should be here but anyway. I am trying out Parallels to run Windows 7. I installed windows 7 on a partition of a second hard drive but couldn't get Windows to start up and finish set up so I went to parallels. Parallels is using the partition I created that contains Windows 7 of course. My problem is that I can't get my CD/DVD drive to eject when I press the eject button. This happens as soon as I launch parallels - from that point on the eject button has no effect. I installed parallels tools; I have sound and internet when using Windows but I have no way of ejecting the disk tray. Any suggestions. Is there an alternate command that can eject the tray like some other hot key or something? What am I missing?
I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 installed in my macbook ... I dont really use the Adobe Bridge software that came along with it. During install, it never asked me for a custom installation so it ended up getting installed in my mac. Can I uninstall it using AppCleaner and not affect my Photoshop CS3?
I have my external HDD partitioned for my Media storage and for Time Machine. Unfortunately, my mac is having problems and I want to back up my computer to reinstall Lion. Problem is...Time Machine is also not backing up anymore (last backup was 2 months ago). So I want to erase the Time Machine volume of my HDD so I can use SuperDuper to backup my hard drive...but of course I don't want to erase the media partion. Â So...using Disk Utility, I can just erase the Time Machine partion (volume) of the HDD and leave the Media portion intact, correct? I would hate to erase the Time Machine volume and find out the Disk Utility also erased all my music and movies too!
I have a 15" MB Pro, 2.66, 8gb ram, Intel Core i7 processor, OS 10.6.8, a year or so old. I'm having trouble with a Lacie d2 Quadra v3 7200rpm drive. At first I thot it was the drive but now believe it's something with the mac since when hooked up to my old MB Pro I don't have this problem. When copying from the Lacie to another drive and sometimes when unmounting I get a message saying it can't unmount because it is in use by another application. But I am not running any other application, at least not knowlingly.
I would guess that a program(s) is accessing the drive without my knowledge (and perhaps performing indexing operations?) and I would like to find out which program(s), and how I can stop it. When I go to Preferences>Accounts>Login Items I see VMWare Fusion Helper (unchecked), and iTunesHelper and CNQL2405_Button Manager (both checked). Could any of these be responsible? I wonder if iTunes being used to backup my iPhone has created a problem, or separately if iCloud, Life or iSync or another app that could index might be creating issues.
Is that setting effecting the processor as well? or anything else?it'd be great if when put on the "better battery life" it would down clock a bit to squeeze more battery life.
