OS X Mavericks :: How To Show Hidden Files On NTFS Drive

Aug 24, 2014

I have some files on a NTFS drive (from a Wiindows 7 PC), the files were hidden. So ... I followed these instructions:

Batch FileXamine [URL] Choose your drive- on the right panel chose “privileges”- chose “preset” –> “public share”(which is chmod 755 for folders and does a chmod 644 on files)- Check “apply to enclosed..”- Apply Permissions  To enable hidden files/folders in finder windows:Open FinderOpen the Utilities folderOpen a terminal windowCopy and paste the following line:defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YESPress returnNow hold ‘alt’ on the keyboard and right click on the Finder iconClick on Relaunch(DID NOT RUN) to revert backdefaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO (DID NOT RUN)

After I applied the above I could see the folders and files, although the folders appear as light blue, not the usual blue folders we in OS X, and the files are lighter as well.

When I select 'get info' under 'sharing and permissions' I see 'you can only read', no other options are available.

However, I am able to transfer the files to my desktop, although they remain light blue. Also, when I select 'get info' (on the transferred files on the desktop) under 'sharing and permissions' 'my user name' 'read & right' is enabled. But the folders still appear blue (and the files are much lighter).

I assume if I run the Command: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

The folders and files will no longer be visible.

Applications :: Hidden Files For Both Windows / OS X On NTFS

Apr 13, 2010

I have just acquired an external enclosure for my 160GB 2.5 HDD, and I have it formatted as NTFS on a MBR partition table. I use NTFS-3G on OSX, and it's, of course, natively supported by windows. Well, I am having problems with hidden files between them. In OSX, the .DS_Store files, .Trashes and ._*name* files are hidden, but I can see windows' hidden files (RECYCLER, RECYCLE BIN, and System Volume Information). In Windows, I can see .DS_Store, .Trashes and ._*name* files from OSX, but not Windows' hidden files. I am looking for a way to solve this, or not have the files created on the disks.

Anyways, is there any way I could just completely wipe my hard drive because I have a complete mess of duplicate files and songs that I don't want to even bother sorting through.

OS X :: Transfer Files To NTFS External Drive?

Nov 9, 2010

I pretty much made the switch to all MAC a few months ago. I have a few external drives that i use with Media players and they prefer and work better when formatted to NTFS problem is, MACs can only read and write to FAT32. I have Windows 7 on my macbook ( though my movie collection is on my iMac ) via bootcamp, so that isn't a option. I heard and read about some programs and what not.. but what is the fastest and easiest way to transfer files from my iMac to a NTFS formatted HD? I have movies ( some over 4gb in size ) on my iMac.

OS X :: Transferring Files That Were On A External NTFS Hard Drive To A Mac?

May 18, 2009

I'm new to Mac so I'm sure its user error.

I recently bought a Macbook and I have a external USB hard drive that is formatted NTFS. I copied all of the files off of external HD and pasted them on my Macbook. I slicked the external hard drive and formatted it as FAT32 so I could read & write on both a PC and Mac if I need.

Anyways, once the external hard drive was formatted I tried moving all of the files back to the external but I keep getting and error code once I paste the files on the external drive. It says: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. Error code 0"

Now I'm not sure if the files are locked or what but I need help. I want to move them back to the external drive. It actually copies a few files to the external but nowhere near what all I need. They are just some .doc files that are on there

Hardware :: Cannot See / Access 31 GB Of Files On NTFS - 3G External Drive

Sep 30, 2009

I have a 500 gb Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I installed NTFS-3g so I could read the NTFS files on it. I could access ALL 31 GB of files on the hard drive before today but now I see only 4 little files that I put on there yesterday (only 2 GB).

When I click on 'Get Info' for the hard drive, it says I have 31.4 GB of files in it but I can only see and access the 4 files that comprise only 2 GB of space. I'm wondering if I deleted something from the hard drive that allowed me to read the 31 GB of files. Perhaps some NTFS-3g file? How I can see and access all 31 GB of files on my hard drive again?

MacBook :: Writes Files As Compressed To Ntfs External Drive?

I bought an external hard drive and formatted it to ntfs.  Whenever I copy files from the Mac to the external ntfs drive it automatically converts it to a compressed ntfs file.  This is very frustrating because my media player only plays uncompressed files, so I can't play my files on it.  Is there anyway to *prevent* my mac from automatically compressing the files when they are copied to a ntfs drive?

OS X :: Recover Files From Formatted Drive / Boot Camp Ran Quick NTFS Format

Sep 24, 2009

I wanted a larger Windows partition so I went into Boot Camp assistant and deleted the Windows partition, made a new one and proceeded to insert my Windows CD. It went through the installation process and i selected the right drive/partition to have a quick NTFS format. After the format, my MacBook restarted and stalled. Needless to say, Boot Camp ran a quick NTFS format on the entire drive.

Now, is there any way to recover any of the files that were quickly formatted? Is there any good software out there that may be able to recover anything?

But if I go to the files themselves, finder shows some with art some without.  Why?  I currently have one file that shows no art in icon or list view.  In column and cover flow, it shows art in the info pane but not the highlighted file.  I can move the file out of ITunes and the art shows up everywhere but icon view.  Other files, show the art in all the right places.

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.4) Show And Remove DS Files Without Terminal

Sep 10, 2014

I am running 10.9.4

It can be done through terminal, its just a bit all or nothing. I would like to show the .DS files on a USB stick for example, remove them and switch back to hide without round tripping to terminal every time.

Can be done easily on a PC but not the Mac i know. Did I dream it or could one show/hide hidden files on previous OS?  I know extra menu items appear with the alt but not 'show hidden'

Having the .DS files is a real pain when loading movie files onto a media player or trying to play through a SMART TV. As most (all) smart tvs only accept FAT/ ExFAT formatting the .DS files show in the menu. On media players it's worse as it  prevents one playing multiple movies in order and to repeat till you hit stop. As soon as the player hits a .DS it will stop and throw up an error.

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.4) Files Show In Disk Utility But Not In Finder

Sep 3, 2014

Having trouble with my backup drive. It's a 1TB WD My Passport Ultra.

The drive mounts in Finder, but is extremely slow. In Disk Utility, the drive shows the correct disk space usage and number of files; but in Finder it only shows the folders/files at the root level of the drive, and each has a size of zero bytes with no items:

What is happening? How can I access the data (it's obviously still there if DU shows the files) and (possibly) fix this?

OS X :: Flash Drive Containing .M4V Files Don't Show Up On PC?

Sep 14, 2010

I have a 1GB flash drive..of which i've placed some iTunes formatted home movies in to hand to my dad who has a Windows XP laptop.

When this flash drive is connected to his laptop and I discover the flash drive on XP, and try to open it...nothing happens. Nothing opens. At best it says that in order to view the files in the flash drive that Windows XP needs to reformat the flash drive, but in the process it states that it will have to erase all content and data to do so..

So now i'm wondering how can I transfer these movie files from my MBP to his Windows XP laptop.?

I've only tried this on flash drives and really hope it wouldn't be the same situation if I used my external hard drive instead; as in connecting my external HD which had a ton more home movies, connect it to his laptop and hopefully it showing up... My external HD isn't running Time Machine or anything like that, it's just a clean External HD where I throw in a lot of home movies...

OS X Mavericks :: Finding And Deleting Hidden Users

Jul 2, 2014

A few weeks ago I upgraded to 10.9.3, enabled keys function, etc. Since then, I've been having major issues with my computer - there seems to be a hidden user who changes permissions. I get error messages at times saying files are being used by another user or I don't have permission to view some folders under Documents or Library//Application Support that I routinely use.

In Terminal I ran whois on some of the hidden folders this user has on my computer and was able to see various .com / .net addresses associated with the files, which I ran who's to learn more about.

Net / net, I need a command line in Terminal to list hidden users and then delete them. BTW, I've spoken with tech support for hours yesterday and we even erased my hard drive, reinstalled OS X and the hidden users are still there. We've identified it's not a problem with our carrier. things are routinely in my Trash, such as music files I never deleted and other misc. files that even after I Secure Empty Trash, show up again (random plist files, keys, etc.). Hardware Overview:OX XVersion 10.9.3 (13D65)2.4 GHz Intel Core i7Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
