MacBook Pro :: Display Shrinks When Running Application Modified By SwitchResX

Jun 1, 2014

I play the Elder Scrolls Online and was trying to tweak around with the game's settings to get the most frames possbile while running the game with a high level of rendering samples. I did this by lowering the game's window resolution by one level while in full screen. However, after a recent update the game's true full screen no longer works and I'm unable to change the game's in-game resolution. The game automatically sets itself to my Macbook Pro's native display, and this results in a frame rate drop.

As a workaround, at least until it was fixed, I would lower my Macbook's native display before running the game, and restore it when I was finished playing. This was tedious to me, and I looked around for a program that would automatically change the display on a specfic application's startup or exit. I found SwitchResX at [URL] and wanted to try it. I made it so that the resolution would switch to 1280 x 800 whenever ESO was loaded. It worked fine, but I wanted to do a comparision of frames at the normal resolution to see if it actually fixed anything. This is where my problem lies: after closing ESO and disabling the SwitchResX setting, the entire screen shrinks down to a small square whenever I run other applications (initially I thought it was just with ESO, but I found out that more programs were affected while typing this), and most of it is surrounded by a big black border:

(You can see the tool bar and the application dock hanging in the middle of the screen)

I've tried:

Uninstalling SwitchResX

Changing the display

Changing the display while running the programs affected

Soft Reseting

Hard Rereseting

A NVRAM Reset

OS X :: SwitchResX / Can't Find Files And Settings To Modify It

May 5, 2009

I had a problem with my iMac in that the second monitor kept flickering black every few seconds. After much pulling out of hair, I managed to sort it by using SwitchResX, creating a new resolution with a slightly different refresh rate.

Well, I've now reinstalled Leopard, and I'm not sure what files SwitchResX modified. I have a mountable backup image of the old installation and I just need to know what files to copy across.

I've copied over Users/Me/Library/Preferences/ByHost/(URL).6881753F-E268-5D65-B162-DE4A346FC4E3.plist
and
I *think* one other one (I cant remember which .plist file it was).

Rebooted and I still have the problem, so I assume I've missed the correct file....

I dont know what settings I used either so can't redo it.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: 10.6.8 Printing Shrinks The Content By 50%?

May 14, 2012

I have an iMac running OS X 10.6.8 that is connected to three printers. The printer I constantly have problems with is an epson photo stylus 1400. Whenever I try to print a full size 8.5 x 11" page using illustrator, indesign, or from a PDF it shrinks the content by 50%. Some of my prints require borderless printing, something this printer is capable of doing. Regardless of printing borderless or with a border it still shrinks all my prints. All my drivers are up to date, and I make sure that the correct settings are used everytime (actual size, US letter borderless...etc)

Aug 21, 2014

When I send a PDF to a windows user, the PDF shrinks.  I'm not talking about file size, but when they open the document, it's 50-75% of the original size and hard to read.

On my computer everything looks fine.  I'm not using any filters to reduce file size.

If I reduce the reslution to 1920x1080p the video plays smoothly. Do I lose any image quality for playing the video when the moniter isnt set to its native resolution?

MacBook Pro :: Display Does Not Turn On Even Though Computer Is Running

Aug 31, 2014

I have a 2008 non-unibody MacBook Pro. When I boot the computer, sometimes the display does not turn on. I've tried using the flashlight technique, and there isn't even anything on the LCD. I know the computer is on because it makes the chime and if I enter my password I can adjust the volume and play music. Occasionally, resetting the SMC will fix the issue temporarily, but it doesn't always work. What should I do?

Hardware :: Possible To Have Macbook Closed But Still Have Computer Running From A Display?

Jan 20, 2010

I've just bought a Dell 2209WA. I'm struggling a little with colour profiles and monitor setting, not sure which is the best thing to do. I'll be working with some things that need to be printed out and some that are for web only. So I'm guessing I'll need to use different colour profiles depending on what I'm doing, is that right? Can anyone recommend some to me?1. Is it possible to close my macbook pro yet still have it working through my monitor? I have a wireless keyboard so it'd be preferable if I close close the mac and run the monitor from it.

MacBook Pro :: External Display Not Working Running Lion 10.7.4

Jun 7, 2012

I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.4. Since I upgraded to Lion the external display stopped working altogether. After connecting adapter to laptop the screen on the laptop goes blue for a moment and then returns to normal. However, the external display is never detected.

I searched in forums before sending this message, but most problems I found are related with some glitches of the screen and they seem to be getting some image in the external monitor. In my case... it simply stopped working at all.

Mac Mini :: Running Out Of Application Memory?

Apr 24, 2012

I have had terrible problems with my Mac Mini. Apple has replaced the hard drive twice, the SATA cable once and the optical drive once in the first year I've had it. After the latest installation of Lion, I have had repeated problems with the error "Your Mac OS x startup disk has no more space available for application memory." This is false -- I have less than half of my 500 GB in use and 4 GB of wired memory.

I believe that Safari is always running when I get this error. Also, I cannot cleanly quit Safari -- I always must force quit, b/c it hangs when I quit. The last time I got this message, Safari was using 1.26 GB of memory.

My System Memory report is all out of whack:

VM size: 221.25 GB
Page ins: 1.59 GB
Page outs: 40.15 GB
Swap used: 59 GB

This is after only 1 or 2 days of uptime. I have just a couple of weeks left on my Apple Care and am desperate to know if this is hardware problem requiring my 5th trip to the Genius Bar or if this some kind of software problem that I can fix.

On this latest Lion install, I did a clean install with no settings or applications, and I killed extensions on Safari.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Delete Application That Is Broken But Still Running

Sep 5, 2014

Somehow, Quicken became broken so I replaced it with new copy and moved old to trash. When trying to empty trash I get the message that the application is still in use and can't remove. When I take the app out of trash and try to open it I get the message "Application is broken or incomplete."

Apparently, some part of the application failed to shut down and continues to run. It does not appear in the list when I try to force quit. Whatever it is that's running is either a memory hog or takes up too much CPU time because the whole system slows down to a point that I can't do any work (just get the spinning color wheel) and I have to manually force system shut-down.

When I restart the computer all works okay (but slow) and starts to degrade over time until the system runs out of whatever resource Quicken is using. Question is: How can I delete this application and eliminate the problem.

I have a snowleopard macbook pro and earlier I did what shouldn't be allowed a user to do. I modified the computer's permissions to read-only or write only. After I did that nothing opened. Apps or folders or files. So I reboot and It won't reboot either. The same thing happened to me about 2 years ago and I found a pretty much straightforward solution. Pressing command- or alt-something while booting and then just fixing the thing. I have tried to find a solution like that again on google and in here and mostly what I've found are solutions that involve re-installing the whole OS.

OS X :: Enlarge Application Menus Without Changing Display Resolution?

Jan 3, 2010

I recently purchased a 27" iMac running 10.6.2 and have installed CS4 only to find that the application toolbars/palettes are really small at the default 2560 x 1440 display resolution.

If I decrease the display to 1920 x 1200, my application toolbars/palettes are legible and a comfortable size to use, but then
the screen is not crisp and nice as the 2560 x 1440....and frankly not pleasant to create graphics in.

Is there any workarounds or solutions to this either through the Mac OS or individually through the Adobe Apps?
