MacBook Pro :: Won't Sleep - Hard Drive Activity
Oct 9, 2009I have a new 17" MBP and recently it stopped going to sleep on its own. I can force it to sleep my apple menu or shutting the lid. I have tried everything I can think of... all programs closed, nothing running (to my knowledge) and in activity monitor it shows the disk activity writting every 20 seconds or so... my only conclusion is that it's not letting the HD become inactive long enough to send to sleep... can someone please help me with this?

Nov 22, 2009I noticed lately that my Macbook Pro (late 2008) can get pretty slow because of hard drive activity. Strange this is, there seems to be quite a lot of activity from time to time even when I'm doing next to nothing (but surfing and mailing). how I can diagnose/fix this? Or do I need more memory (got 2gb).

Nov 16, 2009I am getting HD noise like every 20 seconds. Even with no activity. Per the suggestions of another user, I typed this in terminal: iostat -w 1 disk0
And the sound seems to coincide with the output whenever the first column has a value other than 0. So it seems there is activity, it's just not user initiated. Is this some kind of energy saving feature that apple is doing or is it a logging application? Is anyone else having the same issues? Even if you're not, could you run the program and check for 1 or 2 minutes (without any other apps open or doing anything) to see if you also get a value other than 0 in the first column every so often and an associated sound?

MacBook Pro :: System Hangs With Colossal Hard Drive Activity
Jan 12, 2011Been having a problem with my MBP recently, it's the 2008 model btw. This happens like 3 or 4 times a day it usually starts with me trying to change spaces and nothing happening, and the dock won't pop up when I mouse over the bottom. After doing this for say 30 seconds or so the active app will freeze too. I'll still be able to move my mouse it becomes unresponsive. iStat menus tells me that the hard drive is reading and writing at like 5 or 6 Mbps, and the the dock is taking up 200 or Mbs of memory. all the while nothing is happening. after a minute or two it come back slowly like I'll be able to scroll very jumpily for a bit and then the dock'll pop up and I'll whizz round the spaces I keyed in etc.
This is starting to get really annoying, I've tried resetting PRAM and the SMC thing (or whatever they are, the things you do when you turn the laptop off) and repaired the permissions etc. The only thing I can think of doing is a complete reinstall, but that takes a fair amount of effort so I was wondering if you guys had any ideas what's going on. On a separate note my laptop also does this weird sleep thing when I close the lid, it goes to sleep, then comes on again and there's HD activity and then goes to sleep again and so on and so on. This is pretty irritating because the laptop's roasting hot if you leave it like this for a while and it drains the battery. Meaning I've got to shut it down completely if I want to put it in a bag to go somewhere.

Apr 23, 2009Supposedly, the external is in use and cannot be ejected, but i don't think it's in use. I've only recently been encountering this problem, and i have no idea why. I've tried quitting every application, but it still claims to be in use.

OS X :: Replacing MacBook Hard Drive - Nothing On Display
Dec 28, 2009I recently thought it would be a smart idea to volunteer to replace the failing HDD on my friend's Macbook (white, late '07 model), since she could get a higher capacity than 120GB this way, as opposed to getting a replacement at the Genius Bar. I went on ifixit.com, since I was able to change a couple of components on my 1st generation Macbook Pro without much trouble, and followed the guide step by step. Now, I am no rookie with this stuff. I even used to work at an Apple store, but as a specialist, not a genius. However, when I did everything (and it would seem that the installation itself was done properly), the computer screen would remain off once I booted the computer.
I tried changing it back to its original drive to see if I could at least get it to boot, but the same thing happened. Nothing on the display. I tried starting up while pressing C to run from the Snow Leopard disc, I tried starting up while pressing Option, I tried everything I can think of. I am running out of options and I have no clue what to do. Is there something I should have done before putting in the drive? Does anyone know what could be done, aside from taking it to the store and paying the $200 for an HDD replacement? (my former co-workers at the GB seem to be MIA for this).

In Finder > Preferences I have "Hard Disks" unchecked, and "External Drives" checked. Does the Mac Pro see this as an external drive?Apparently so. Is there a way to specify that this one particular external drive shouldn't display on the desktop?

Jul 16, 2009Hoping someone can help me figure this out. I swapped HDDs between a G5 and MacPro this morning. The MacPro was connected to a large LCD TV via HDMI for it's display (using a DVI to HDMI adapter) and it worked great for just scrolling images of our projects (no audio). When I put it's HDD in the G5 and connected it to the display the same way, I got nothing on the screen. Thinking it was a video card issue on the G5 end, I plugged in a different monitor and rebooted the G5. This time I got the flashing question mark folder meaning it couldn't find an OS to boot. So now I can't tell what the issue is. I thought HDDs between G5s and MacPros were the same? If not does this mean the older G5 drive won't work in the MacPro tower? (I haven't tried yet).

Mac Pro :: Unable To Know About Hard Disk Activity Noise?
May 10, 2009I usually just turn off my monitor at night but for some reason, the HD constantly makes spinning noise even then the computer hasn't been used for hours ( i don't run time machine ).
Is there any way to tell what process is causing this stupid HD activity? My previous Dell machine was so much more quiet than this POS. I prefer not having to explicitly put the machine the sleep every time.

So it isn't a hard ware issue. The cables are USB 3.0. Sep 6, 2009Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

Sep 1, 2009Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.
I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.

Sep 9, 2009My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?

I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything.It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.

OS X :: Enlarge Application Menus Without Changing Display Resolution?
Jan 3, 2010I recently purchased a 27" iMac running 10.6.2 and have installed CS4 only to find that the application toolbars/palettes are really small at the default 2560 x 1440 display resolution.
If I decrease the display to 1920 x 1200, my application toolbars/palettes are legible and a comfortable size to use, but then
the screen is not crisp and nice as the 2560 x 1440....and frankly not pleasant to create graphics in.
Is there any workarounds or solutions to this either through the Mac OS or individually through the Adobe Apps?
Mac Pro :: Installing Applications Other Than OS Boot Drive / Moving Application Folder To New Drive
Apr 20, 2009I have two WD 640gigs and the stock WD 500, and I am having trouble deciding on the the optimum configuration. I am open to suggestions. I use my computer for general use as well as for my video editing and graphic design hobbies if that info helps.
I am curious as to the benefits of of the following:
Drive 1 (640)
partition 1: 150gig for OS
partition 2: Bootcamp
remainder: Offline storage
Drive 2 (640)
partition 1: Applications
remainder: music/photos
(scratch disk here?)
Drive 3: (500)
Time machine
Would there be a noticeable benefit to having the applications being separate from the OS boot drive? What if anything else should be split across multiple HDs to increase speed? I've heard of moving the swap file from elsewhere on the forum but I am not sure as to what exactly that is nor the benefits of doing it.
My final question(s) is how exactly I could go by moving my application folder to another drive separate from the OS drive? Just drag and drop? What is this deal with making an alias?

Oct 14, 2009with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.
