MacBook Pro :: External Display Not Working Running Lion 10.7.4
Jun 7, 2012
I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.4. Since I upgraded to Lion the external display stopped working altogether. After connecting adapter to laptop the screen on the laptop goes blue for a moment and then returns to normal. However, the external display is never detected.
I searched in forums before sending this message, but most problems I found are related with some glitches of the screen and they seem to be getting some image in the external monitor. In my case... it simply stopped working at all.

I have a MacBook Pro 13 for portability to my classes at the university and a Dell 2209WA as an external monitor. One of the few good IPS monitors I could find around for cheap.
The monitor works fine in mirror mode with the MacBook Pro, but as an external display only it does not work. It attempts to wake up and then you see power savings mode again and the screen goes black as if there was no connection. Not sure what exactly the problem here is. Drivers?
The monitor works great with a Mac Mini I have and it works great in mirror but not in external display mode(the lid of the MacBook Pro closed). Anybody know of this issue? The cable is good and the MacBook Pro is not that old(a few weeks).

is there seems to be a major bug in the DVI out drivers, so if you connect your new MacBook or MBP to an external Monitor (Apple Cinema or other make) and then your Mac goes to sleep , you cannot 'wake' the external monitor again - either it stays black or worse you get a sort of snowy, out of signal TV look! You need to unplug your monitor, , then when your Mac is awake, re-plug in the external screen. Report this to Apple guys and post anything you know on it here - sooner they send out a patch to fix it the quicker can get back to normal work!

(Not sure whether this is software or hardware related)
I did a powerpoint presentation using my MBP (late 2008, OSX 10.6.2 updated yesterday) and a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Afterwards, I unplugged the projector, then the adapter and closed the screen without looking.
When I opened the screen, surprise!:
- desktop is empty: background image is visible, but all files & folders are gone
- all running applications are still functioning properly
- clicking on the desktop or dragging a file to the desktop does nothing
- content of desktop is accessible through Finder
- there are no other usernames in the HD>Users folder
I have not tried a reboot, because I heard of similar symptoms (without the mini DisplayPort) being related to username issues and people loosing all their data as a result.

I have a macbook pro from fall of 2007. So far it has worked perfectly and I've used it with an LG full hd LCD for about 1,5 years. I use a regular DVI - HDMI cable.About a month back it suddenly stopped working. The TV just tells me "No signal".I didn't change any settings or anything. The computer still recognizes when something is plugged in as the screen flicks blue and the displays icon in the menu bar lists the TV with correct model and resolution. And if I have spaces turned on it changes from 4 to 8 "screens".
I have tried everything from rebooting the computer to resetting P-RAM.
I got a new cable, no difference. However when I tried the TV with my friends MBP, it worked. So the problem is definetly in my computer, not in the TV or cable. My OS X is Version 10.5.8 Leopard.

I have a 15" unibody MBP bought in Nov '08.
Had been using the Mini Displayport > DVI adapter just fine with both HDTV and Dell monitor, BUT then all output has stopped completely!
No monitor is detected by the laptop (although the display does blink blue, as if it had detected it), tried different cables, different displays, using the Displayport firmware update, speaking to Apple, deleting the com.apple..plist files, etc
Edit: it also doesn't work in XP on Bootcamp

Many are having issues with font smoothing not working correctly on external displays with SL 10.6.
I researched this issue and found this blog posting:
URL
the blog itself discusses the issue, and the fix is found in the comments.
Basically, for now the fix is to open Terminal App and enter:
"defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2″
without the quotes, and hit return.
a log out or restart might be required.
this fix seems to stick even after re-boots and shut-downs.

I moved to an iMac from PC 3 months ago, and installed my NAS server as an externally mounted drive, with password protected user logon, and a separate media folder for all itunes music, videos etc, and all photo storage.
This worked fine for a couple of months, and seemed to connect automatically at startup I don't recall any issues at all. That changed a few weeks ago, and each session I now need to re-connect by logging on to the NAS with password. The consquence is that the Home drive keeps being remapped to the internal HD, and the itunes media storage location to the same internal HD, not the NAS.

My external display (HP w2207) seems to conflict with my MacBook Pro (15 inch Retina display, early 2013) since I upgraded MacBook OS to 10.9.4.The external display works at initial boot of Mac but does not work after OS sleeps and I attempt to awaken, and while the external display is not waking, the Retina display flashes through different screen views, which only partially reflect my normal screen, or do not reflect my normal screen at all.Â

I have installed my hard drive from a previous but terminally I'll iMac that was running Snow Leopard into a Sata to USBÂ enclosure. This is displaying on the desktop of my new iMac running Lion as an external Hard drive, also system preferences sees it as a start up source. My question is , is it safe to restart into Snow leopard without causing a kernel panic and if it does boot will it be fast enough to use as it as a USB drive.

This is the first time I've tried OWC memory. So far, so good - the Mac recognizes the RAM and boots okay. Everything I've tried thus far post-upgrade works. I am a happy camper now - my Mac was a bit sluggish due to running out of physical RAM running Parallels.

While using Google Sketchup and several other prgrams concurrently my macbook air cpu heats up substantiall. I like keeping the air "open" to allow for maximum heat disipation but of course this keeps the air screen on while I only want to use my external monitor. Is the only way to turn of the air screen turning down the brightness and using the "Mirror Display" option or is there another setting which alows my to utilize only the external display while the screen is open on the air?

As the title states. I am looking for an external display that matches the display on my black MacBook. I want one with the same gloss finish as my MacBook, this way I can calibrate both screens to look the same. That way when I switch screens it doesn't look different.
Anyone know of a screen that looks identical to the (previous generation) MacBook? I was thinking of getting a Samsung T240 but it has a different finish. How are ASUS screens? Any screens out there that have the same gloss finish?

I have tried a few thinsgs to try and get it to work including reseating the cables and that has not helped. As the title says, the back light works as i can see the screen getting blacker/greyer. Also the external output works as well. I'm not sure what to do at this point because I can't find information on an inverter board for the LCD, only the LED backlight think this could be an issue with the video card 8600M or is my LCD dead and I need a new one?
On a side note I have taken very good care of this computer, no drops, making sure the HDD is parked before moving, having it in a protective case, etc. The only difference is that I gave this to my sister to use and after a few days it died. (seems everything she gets that's electronic dies these days, meaning I probably shouldn't give her anything that has a circuit board in it....)

I have an older 2009 13inch macbook pro. I watch large 1080p files and the video is just a tiny bit studdery when played at the resolution of 2560x1440. If I reduce the reslution to 1920x1080p the video plays smoothly. Do I lose any image quality for playing the video when the moniter isnt set to its native resolution?

I have a 2008 non-unibody MacBook Pro. When I boot the computer, sometimes the display does not turn on. I've tried using the flashlight technique, and there isn't even anything on the LCD. I know the computer is on because it makes the chime and if I enter my password I can adjust the volume and play music. Occasionally, resetting the SMC will fix the issue temporarily, but it doesn't always work. What should I do?

i'm hoping someone can help me out on this little problemmy usual set up is a pair of speakers connected with jacks via an m-audio usb audio interface, with an external monitor connected via mini-dvi to dvi.now for some reason my audio interface has randomly broken (on a side note, could a power cut have somehow broken a usb peripheral connected to my macbook whilst it was asleep?) so i've hooked up my speakers to the line out to rca. Now for some reason, when i plug the mini dvi connector into my macbook i get an incredible amount of hum. not just a little, alot!

I have a 27" iMac and I'm using Samsung SyncMaster SA850 as a second monitor (connected via a display Port cable with a mini Display Port adapter). Everything worked fine until yesterday - the Samsung screen turned black and now it only works with max resolution 1280 x 1024 (native is 2440x1440). I think I upgraded Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 (I don't remember for sure though). When I connect the monitor to an iMac with 10.7.2 everything works fine. And another iMac with 10.7.3 has the same problem as me.

I've just bought a Dell 2209WA. I'm struggling a little with colour profiles and monitor setting, not sure which is the best thing to do. I'll be working with some things that need to be printed out and some that are for web only. So I'm guessing I'll need to use different colour profiles depending on what I'm doing, is that right? Can anyone recommend some to me?1. Is it possible to close my macbook pro yet still have it working through my monitor? I have a wireless keyboard so it'd be preferable if I close close the mac and run the monitor from it.

I play the Elder Scrolls Online and was trying to tweak around with the game's settings to get the most frames possbile while running the game with a high level of rendering samples. I did this by lowering the game's window resolution by one level while in full screen. However, after a recent update the game's true full screen no longer works and I'm unable to change the game's in-game resolution. The game automatically sets itself to my Macbook Pro's native display, and this results in a frame rate drop.Â
As a workaround, at least until it was fixed, I would lower my Macbook's native display before running the game, and restore it when I was finished playing. This was tedious to me, and I looked around for a program that would automatically change the display on a specfic application's startup or exit. I found SwitchResX at [URL] and wanted to try it. I made it so that the resolution would switch to 1280 x 800 whenever ESO was loaded. It worked fine, but I wanted to do a comparision of frames at the normal resolution to see if it actually fixed anything. This is where my problem lies: after closing ESO and disabling the SwitchResX setting, the entire screen shrinks down to a small square whenever I run other applications (initially I thought it was just with ESO, but I found out that more programs were affected while typing this), and most of it is surrounded by a big black border:Â
(You can see the tool bar and the application dock hanging in the middle of the screen)
I've tried:
Uninstalling SwitchResX
Changing the display
Changing the display while running the programs affected
Soft Reseting
Hard Rereseting
A NVRAM Reset

I have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).Â
This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).Â
I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?
