OS X :: Sort Finder In One Place Only
Feb 7, 2010I'd like to be able to sort my downloads folder by Date, but have other places in the Finder sorted by Name. Is there any way to do this?

View 4 RepliesWhen I right click a folder I have dragged to the Dock I get the option to sort by "Date Added". This is super handy and I would like to be able to do it throughout the Finder but I can't find the option anywhere. Please note: I realize there is Date Created and Date Modified, these are not what I'm wanting to do, if a file was created and last modified a year ago, but added to a folder five minutes ago, I want to be able to sort the folder contents so that the file just added appears at the top of the list. (As they do in Stacks.)

One thing that has bugged me: In Windows File Explorer, when browsing files, all the folders are at the top (in alpha order), then the files are sorted below that in alpha order.
In Finder, the folders are mixed in so everything is alpha all together.
I would prefer seeing all my folders at the top.
Is there a setting that controls this?
I have a unibody MBP with Snow Leopard on it. I haven't put a disk in it in a long time but tonight when I did, it slowly spins, etc and then ejects it in about 15 seconds. It doesn't show up in finder at all.
I first put in my snow leopard disk, then a dvd, then a music cd... nothing.
I went to the finder preferences and made sure everything looked ok, but no joy.
Is there any way to sort files in my finder first by kind (folders, pdfs, jpegs, docxs, etc.) and then by name? Right now I can only sort by one or the other. If I sort by kind, the files are grouped according to kind, but the names are mixed up. If I sort by name, all file types and folders are sorted according to name. I like the column view because directory structure can be seen easily.

If I have the following folders or files (the numbers in which represent dates):
"20120211 abcdef" and "2014 abcdef" then, if I sort the files by Name in Finder, they will be sorted like this:
"2014abcdef"
"20120211abcdef"
so Finder seems to be treating the numeric characters as numeric values and sort the files by numeric value.
How to change this behavior and tell Finder to treat numeric characters as alphabetical characters and sort the files/folders like:
"20120211abcdef"
"2014abcdef"

I'm using a Mac Mini to target-disk my Macbook in order to transfer my User folder and some of my Applications. When I browse the Macbook's Applications folder via my Mac Mini, Finder beachballs every time I scroll down to a certain point (about a quarter of the way down), and I have to Relaunch. If I jump to the end of the scroll bar, it beachballs. I've tried column view, list view, and icon view, but whenever it tries to display folder content past that point, it beachballs.

Sorting by name works fine in icon only mode, but whenever I switch to Column mode its completely disorganized. And when I tried in coverflow mode its alphabetical but in inverted mode (Z to A).

I have just purchased my first mac! A refurbed iMac! and I now want to move my music files across onto it. I am very pedantic and would like my HD to be as tidy as possible. My question is: Where should I place my Music Files on the HD?
1.) Should I create a music folder within the HD Music Folder and allow iTunes to copy/duplicate the files into the iTunes Folder? (Selecting the options via iTunes Preferences).
2.) Transfer the music files directly into the iTunes Folder?
Or something else? What method do you guys use to store your music files on the HD? I intend to have some sub folders within the main folder to separate Albums and individual artists or tracks I have downloaded in the past etc. Finally, If I use the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" option, will my tracks be renamed? As I intend to name/keep files names in a format I prefer.
I was looking into Apple's Remote Desktop application but it seems only working on local networks? Or did i misunderstood that? I need to be able to observe/ operate one of my mac's at another office for when i'm home via my MBP.

When I remove the cover and the internal clear plastic cover - it starts up. This leads me to believe there is some sort of switch which recognizes that the cover has been removed. However, I'm at a loss as to why the boot is failing in the first place.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYou read it right. If the air deflector is in place it won't boot. No gray screen. The power light comes on but it never gets to the chime. I hear a click and possibly the disk start to spin and then nothing. I reset the PMU and the PRAM but it didn't help. If I open the panel and take out the air deflector it boots fine. Once it starts I can put the deflector back and it runs normally.

I have a 120GB SSD that I boot from and would preferably like to keep this as free as possible. I have all of the Jam Packs and would like to install these now but can only seem to be able to select the boot drive to install them onto.
I have 2 1tb Caviar Blacks with nothing on right now.
Do they have to go on the boot drive? They will fit if need be, I'd just prefer to keep the boot drive less cluttered.
