The Sound Settings show no output device. When trying to adjust the sound a circle with a line through it appears. Cannot run the volume adjusted up or down either. Also the sound does not work with a headset either. Have tried PRAM and SMC rest as well as plugging and unplugging headset. Running 10.9.3. Was running fine yesterday - feels like it may be hardware problem?

Dec 13, 2009I just bought the macbook 13" (white casing) today and the first thing I noticed when I turned it on was the fan, it was extremely loud!! I let it run for awhile and it was still constantly loud. Then I tried rebooting twice and still the same problem. My room is only around mid 60F. Is there some function I'm supposed to turn off? Or did I get a lemon macbook?

Jun 13, 2012I have had no problems with my MacBook Pro until recently. I am working on a summer research project so I do not usually get the time to visit an Apple Store, turn in my computer for a day and wait.
When I lift my computer while its still on, it gives me a weird beeping noise which won't stop. I always have to manually shut it down by using the power button. It work perfectly well when I switch it on again. But if I lift it in the air or if it gets out of sync with the line of gravity, the same beeping occurs.
I guess I heard some particle go around inside my Mac when I tried to tilt it when in power off mode. Should I open it and check or is it too bad?
At present, I am backing up my research data. My work would suffer a lot if I have to submit my computer for repairs even for a single day.

Also, my sound does not always work. Through the lap top built in speakers, sometimes through a head set and sometimes through my bluetooth.

The little box next to mute is checked and I cannot un-check it because it's grayed out. Mar 13, 2008I have the early 2008 Mac Pro, standard configuration. I run a 30" ACD and recently added a second monitor. Ever since then I have been hearing this faint whirring sound, as if something in the machine is starting/reving up and then whirring down. It's audible to me because I have my machine sitting on top of a pedestal desk right beside my table. Does running two monitors make something inside, maybe a fan, run wierd? Could it be the fan of the video card? I am just curious, as I had not heard the sound before when I was running just one monitor. Oh, and the second monitor in question is a Wacom Cintiq. Video card is the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. I dare not open the side panel when the machine is running to check what's causing it lest I mess something up. It's like, rrrrrrrrrrrrr, rrrrrrr, rrrrrrrrrrr, like a miniature reving sound. LOL, that's the best I can do to imitate the sound. It's as audible as the sound of the regular fans.

Jul 26, 2010I just noticed that the sound of my 21.5" iMac speakers kinda changes notably when I'm using Windows (BootCamp). Compared to the sound while using Snow Leopard, it sound very thin, bass-less and... just strange. More like MacBook speakers, or just small speakers. Another thing is that the headphone input doesn't work on Windows. Could these issues be related to audio drivers? I don't know much about that sort of stuff.

Mar 21, 2012I was wondering if anyone knows of a fix for my iMac 21.5" which seems to disable the onboard sound upon restarting?
I understand that this can be remedied by resetting the SMC but I cannot be expected to do this each and every time the machine is restarted. Is there any way I can get it to work permanently?
Upon restarting the volume icon is greyed out, and pressing the volume up/down keys bring up the volume box with a "no entry" sign underneath the icon. I've tried unplugging and replugging the external speakers to no avail, and this occurs with the internal speakers also. I've checked the correct device is selected in the volume settings and the optical output is not switched on.

So a week ago I opened Photoshop and my macbook froze and gave me this screen:
I had to force it to shut down, and when I turned it back on, I'd get the chime, I'd see the logo and the spinning cog, then it would go to a white screen and either stall or shut itself off... I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC. I went into Disk Utility and verified the disk and the permissions. I also reset Photoshop's preferences, and completely reinstalled it. Booting in safe mode worked, but of course it's a little slow and I can't use some programs. I was able to start up normally by booting in single user mode and running the /sbin/fsck -fy command a couple times.
I ended up taking it to a Genius Bar, they ran a couple diagnostic tests and confirmed it wasn't a hardware issue and it was probably the OS. They reinstalled Snow Leopard, I restored my stuff with my Time Machine backup, and everything worked fine for a couple days.
But today when I turned it on, it shut itself down again! And running single user mode doesn't work anymore. It'll say "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." and when I reboot, it shuts down at the white screen. Now the only way it will boot up is in safe mode, and if I close the lid to put it in sleep mode, it'll turn itself off after a few minutes.
I'm not incredibly tech savvy, but I'm wondering if it could be a third party program. I'm not sure how to find out which one is causing the issue, though... I've uninstalled SMCfanControl and StartupSound.prefpane. Those are the only two I can think of that could potentially mess with the startup...

Dec 21, 2007I have a mac OS 10.3.5, PowerPC G5. The sound does not work. I have restarted the computer, played with sound settings, made sure all speakers and headphones are unplugged. When speakers or headphones are plugged in the volume works fine, but when they are not in, I can't hear the thing.
