Mac Pro :: Running Two Monitor Displays - Suddenly New Whirring Sound
Mar 13, 2008
I have the early 2008 Mac Pro, standard configuration. I run a 30" ACD and recently added a second monitor. Ever since then I have been hearing this faint whirring sound, as if something in the machine is starting/reving up and then whirring down. It's audible to me because I have my machine sitting on top of a pedestal desk right beside my table. Does running two monitors make something inside, maybe a fan, run wierd? Could it be the fan of the video card? I am just curious, as I had not heard the sound before when I was running just one monitor. Oh, and the second monitor in question is a Wacom Cintiq. Video card is the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. I dare not open the side panel when the machine is running to check what's causing it lest I mess something up. It's like, rrrrrrrrrrrrr, rrrrrrr, rrrrrrrrrrr, like a miniature reving sound. LOL, that's the best I can do to imitate the sound. It's as audible as the sound of the regular fans.

I just bought a new 24 inch 2.66 GHz iMac off of MacMall last week (6 days ago) and it has been working fine up until a day and a half ago. You see, I put the iMac to sleep for a while, and when I woke it up there was a moderately loud (but in no way ear bashing) grinding/whirring sound coming from the left area of the machine under the screen. I now noticed that the longer I have the machine on for, the louder and more annoying it gets. Does anyone know what is there (HDD, fan or what)? Also, is this something I have to worry about or is this an issue all iMac users face? I am new to OS 10.5 and modern Macs. I am really starting to get worried about this, as the machine is almost brand new.

I have been using the latest macbook pro 13.3" since April 2010. Over the last week the monitor suddenly goes completely white and the external monitor goes black. The laptop becomes unresponsive although the programmes opened continue running (e.g a skype voice call would continue without interruption although the monitor is all white).
The only solution at the moment is to press the turn off button for a few seconds then switch the laptop on again. It will then work normally until for no apparent reason this happens again.

I have the new macbook unibody, and use it from time to time to dsiplay things to an external montior, plasma, projector, etc. Using a mini-display adapter to a converter to get s-video was a challenge, but I figured it out. I have used this many times, as I am a DJ and need s-video out to connect to most devices.I was at an event saturday night, and the display on the external device (projector) kept displaying my desktop, NOT the external feed.
It was NOT set up for mirroring, as it seems like the displays were 'switched'. I had my desktop on the projector, and my external on my macbook pro monitor. I tried to fool around with arrangement and resolution, but to no avail. I understand that sometimes you have to drag your source to the right (of left) to get it to display on the external, and this was done, but it was still reversed.I know it was something simple to get the 2 switched back to the way it should be, but I could not figure it out. Any advice? None of my apple buds can figure this out.

I purchased the Toshiba Dynadock U3 - which ran well with Win 7- hoping there would be drivers for the Mac OS. Anyone have any ideas how I can accomplish this configuration? If not, then what is the next best configuration where I do not have to keep connecting and disconnecting wires fron my MBA. Just want to connect one wire (e.g. - USB cable) that that's it. Is this wishful thinking?Â

I have an old iMac G3 in my room running Mac OS 10.3 Panther. Just recently, I hooked up a VGA CRT monitor in an attempt to run dual displays. However, it seems that all the machine or OS is capable of is running in mirrored mode.

how can you cross fade between 2 monitor displays when projecting on a big projector.
kinda like how a dj crossfades music seemlessly with a toggle?
i'm not sure if that makes sense...

Been working with a new mac mini in my office the last 2 days. The power settings are set to make the display only go to sleep after 15 minutes. System set to never go to sleep and hard drive never spins down. 3 of the 4 times since working with this thing when moving the mouse to wake up the display I get nothing but noise and snow on the screen. To get back to functioning correctly I have to put the computer to sleep with the power button and back on again. Once it comes back, it will work fine.
New mini 2.4 running 10.6.4. Monitor is hooked up via DVI through the mini display port.

explain why my MBP is running very hot under OS X. It started about 2 days ago, to the point where in just a few minutes the laptop is running very hot and fans going probably at 100% (but I didn't test this). I'm using windows under bootcamp now and that is fine, so I don't think it's the hardware. I have checked the ram use and thing seems normal - the highest being safari around 250mb with many tabs open. Would it be something using the CPU to make it heat up? Even with nothing open it heats up in a few minutes. This was before the most recent update, and after the recent update. It's a 13" 2010 MBP.

I'm posting this on behalf of my father. He has a 2008 white macbook which has recently started running quite hot (160-180+F), even at idle. It has the latest version of 10.7 installed. He has an external HD with his previous copy of 10.6 and it exhibits the same behavior when booted from that system. He bugs me whenever he has computer problems told me that his MacBook had started randomly shutting down with no warning. I had similar trouble with a MacBook Pro and it turned out to be a faulty battery, so we got him a new battery, figuring it couldn't hurt to have a fresh one with a 4 year old computer. it didn't solve the problem at all.
Later he said that he noticed the computer felt hot, so he decided to run a small fan blowing across the computer while it was on his desk, and that stopped the random shutdowns. So I thought, OK, this is an overheating issue. Maybe the fan isn't working properly, it's full of dust, something is hogging the CPU all the time, etc.
The next time I was at his place I had him install fan control and a temperature meter. We noticed right away that the thing was running really hot. It was at 160-180F while at idle. He had menu meters installed, after a reboot we could see that the processor was sitting at 2-5% load. Not only did the sensors report the high temperate, but I could feel that the bottom of the case was very hot.We decided to open up the case and see if there was dust clogging things up, etc. There was some, but nothing clogging vents or anything. We blew it out nice and clean with compressed air anyway and put it back together. I even turned it on while we had it open so I cold see that the fan was actually spinning, and it was.

My PowerBook has been working extremely slow for the past couple of days. Restarting hasn't helped. Even though it's about 5 years old, it's never given me any trouble. Now I wanted to start FinalCutPro, and there's a popup saying: Configuration Error This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing. 512MB of RAM.So I can't even start this program. It's really an emergency since I have to work with FCP

Very suddenly my dock has disappeared, (and occasionally reappears), and is now completely non-useable. Why..?
I have created other accounts on my computer previously and the dock on those is fine...I have looked in Activity monitor and it flashes on and then disappears in there. I tried using terminal to 'killall Dock', but this did nothing...Am using Leopard on Alu iMac.
Any ideas what's going on?

I have a 27" iMac and I'm using Samsung SyncMaster SA850 as a second monitor (connected via a display Port cable with a mini Display Port adapter). Everything worked fine until yesterday - the Samsung screen turned black and now it only works with max resolution 1280 x 1024 (native is 2440x1440). I think I upgraded Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 (I don't remember for sure though). When I connect the monitor to an iMac with 10.7.2 everything works fine. And another iMac with 10.7.3 has the same problem as me.

Peculiar problem. My sound suddenly switched to being internal speaker only, even though I have decklink HD Extreme card and was using it as my audio output the night before. Narrowed the problem down to anything being plugged in to the firewire ports - FW400 and FW800 ports and drives or even my Mini DV deck. When I plug anything into the firewire ports, trying to get to the sound settings in system preferences hangs, and all sound will only work on the internal speaker. This is a sudden problem and leaves me only being able to plug in esata external hard drives. There is some sort of conflict going on somewhere.
Mac Pro 2008
Mac Osx 10.5.8
Decklink HD Extreme card
Recently installed LaCie eSATA II PCI Express Card.
Use the machine mostly for video editing, so really need the external HDs.

My Macbook has suddenly stopped having internal speakers in the sound preferences. When I turn it on, it plays that familiar synth chord sound to say all is ok, but it wont play any audio. So videos and itunes etc play but the sound isn't produced. When I try to turn the volume up or down, the indicator says the volume is up full, but I cannot adjust it. Underneath the volume measurement there is a little sign in white like a no entry sign, meaning that adjustment of volume is not available.I gues this must mean that the speakers have been disabled, but can't figure out how to enable them.

I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X, Version 10.6.8 and Safari has started running really slowly, all of a sudden. I've tried Firefox and Google Chrome, which run faster, but not much. Wi-Fi has been checked and is not the problem. I've emptied my cache and reset Safari. My disc usage is 15%, my system memory says that I have 2.35 GB of free space, and there are no "page outs". All of the programs, on my computer, that do not require internet access run fine. My firewall is off.

I have a 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, and, until recently, all of the networking was running just fine. In addition to the OS X Mavericks, I also have the Developer Preview of OS X Yosemite on another partition. A couple of days ago, when I booted up in the Mavericks partition, I had full signal on my Wi-Fi, but I couldn't open any webpages or the App Store, etc. The strange thing is that the Yosemite partition can connect to the Internet, but the Mavericks partition cannot. All of my other devices can utilize the Wi-Fi so it isn't an issue with my router or modem. I've tried recreating the Yosemite settings on the Mavericks partition, but that hasn't worked either.Â
I've tried several things to no success:
Fixing Permissions
Adding 8.8.8.8 to my DNS
Checking to make sure no Proxies are selected (nothing was selected).
Checking to make sure I'm using DHCP, which I was.
Pinging several websites to see if I get a result, which I did.
Removing and re-adding Wi-Fi to the Network Services.
Switching to Ethernet.Â
Like I said, Yosemite can connect just fine, but Mavericks cannot.

however today suddenly the superdrive decided to make a 1-2 second 'seeking' sound at *every* startup. there is no dvd inserted nor have i used it even once in this week. it does this at the grey apple screen at the same time the apple "chime" sounds.
i am pretty sure it didn't to this up until today, i am not particularly concerned but why would it start doing this after a week on its own?
