MacBook Pro :: 2010 OptiBay With External DVD-RW-Cannot Install Windows7 ?

I have a smoothly working MBP2010 with an optibay carrying 500gb HDD and an Intel SSD in the original HDD port.
I also have an USB2.0 DVD-RW.
I'm curious if you can install windows 7 or any windows for that matter on the hdd installed in the optibay and boot via bootcamp?
Has anyone tried this and if so does it work well?
I decided to keep my 15" mbp as today is the last day for the exchange so I'm going to go ahead and install the optibay and stick my 500gb hitachi drive in there.
Is it possible to boot from an external Firewire DVD Drive? It certainly isnt from an external USB DVD. Real answers only please, not "I think so" ones based on HDDs or rumours you may have heard!...
Background:
I've got an MCE Optibay in my Mid-2010 i7 MBP. When installing Bootcamp it refuses to install from the external USB DVD drive. In the end I pulled the 2nd HDD out and reconnected the internal DVD. It then worked fine without a hitch. Then I reinstalled the 2nd HDD and all was fine for a few days.
Now I want to resize my Win7 partition (bigger, as MS Visual Studio's bigger than I thought, and I might stick some games on). I can shrink the OSX partition fine with Disk Utility, but windows won't grow the Win7 one because the empty space is before the Win7 partition, not after it. Apparently this can be done with GParted. Guess what? I can't boot the Linux based GParted CDROM from the external USB DVD drive! So, will a Firewire one work where USB fails, and solve my alternative OS booting issues? If I buy one I can then either use GParted, or delete the Win7 partition and start again without having to pull the laptop to bits all over again, only to put it back once I'm done, and possibly have the same issues in the future. Obviously I don't want to blow extra money getting a Firewire DVD drive though if it's a waste of money...
I am not very experienced in this so forgive me. I have a 13 in MBP mid 2010. I am selling it because I purchased a MBA. I reinstalled(reformat) the OS from Disk 1. Now do I have to use the applications disk to install all the applications or are they already there from the reinstall?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy friend just got a macbook from 2010 but it's used and there is a lot of old software, media, etc. on it. The person she bought it from didn't give her the install discs or anything that came with it. What I am wondering is, if I were to use my 2008 OS X discs on her 2010 macbook could I restore the computer to factory settings? Or would I have to use a newer version of the OS X?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 2010 i7 MacBook Pro. I came across GeForce Mac OS X Driver Release 19.5.8 and CUDA 3.0 from the website: http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html(under Mac OS X 10.6.4 Update->What we know about 10.6.4 so far...)Is it advisable to install these drivers on the new 2010 MBP? I assume that whatever included in the official Mac OS/X update have been tested. If we download and install drivers from parts manufactures such as Nvidia, we risk possible untested, compatibility problems.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI Recently installed on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) windows7 and then updated to windows8. I'm now unable to install Bootcamp on the windows OS due to compatibility issues.
Is there a specific version of bootcamp that may work and if yes where can I find it?

I want to use an external monitor with my 2010 13" MBP. The MBP's screen resolution is 1280x800 (8:5 aspect ratio). Let's say I buy a monitor with a 1920X1080 resolution (16:9) aspect ratio. Does that mean that the image would be distorted on the extermnal display? Or can the graphics card simulataneously hadnle two different native resolutions?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am currently in the market for a new hard drive for my MBP to upgrade and one to use for Time Machine. I was thinking somewhere between 500GB to 1TB of data for both the MBP and external. I tried the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB in my 2009 13" MBP but it was too loud and clicked so I returned it. I now have the 2010 13" MBP and was wondering what other hard drives are out there?

I'm trying to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my MacBook Air 11" (Late 2010 model) via Boot Camp assistant. I've hacked the Info.plist of the Boot Camp Assistant to allow it to create a bootable USB installer drive. After successfully creating the USB, the laptop proceeds to reboot itself but it never loads up the Windows installer. However, if I restart it while holding Option, and selecting EFI boot, the installer loads up. However, once it loads, I cannot install Windows 8 Consumer Preview to the Boot Camp partition because of this error: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. WIndows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS. Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."Â

I am relatively new mac and networking for that matter! I am having trouble seeing my mac on my Windows 7 PC, I guess the biggining is a good place to start, so here is what iv done. On my Macbook, I've gone to system preferences/network/airport/advanced/WINS and put in the name of my workgroup "WORKGROUP" and put my gateway ip in for the winservers. But not seeing the mac on the PC. I've been struggling all week trying to share a drive out from a mac and mount it remotely onto a windows 7 machine. Also I haven't been able to see any of my macs in the network in windows explorer on the windows 7 machine.
Eventually I found a solution, which I thought others may find useful:
Goto Start Menu
Search for: Local
Hit Enter
Select Local Security Policy
Goto Local Policies> Security Options
Double Click on Network security: LAN Manager Authentication
Change level to: Send LM # LTLM Responses
Then:
Goto Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
De-select Require 128-bit encryption
Hit OK
But still no luck, all I want to be able to do is move files back and forth from the Mac to pc, and visa-versa.
I installed windows 7 on my macbook using bootcamp and apple told me how to log in under mac osx but they wouldn't help me beyond that.
when I log in under windows, there's no volume even though I've tried adjusting the volume. the screen is @ a low resolution and I've said "fine, that won't affect the machine's performance and it may take up more room anyway, I think?" I can't right click on anything. Also~ very important~ I can't get wi~fi under windows. However, all these things are not an issue when I log in under Mac OSX and everything works exactly as it did before I loaded Windows. I think I need drivers for windows but how do I get them??????
the reason I loaded windows in the first place was I have an external hard drive that has I believe 80 gigs of my music, pictures, documents, and other data. I did not know there was that many gigs of data on there and I had to guess as to the size partition I wanted for windows. I ended up making a 50 gig partition. I didn't know if it was possible to uninstall windows and reinstall it. I bought this copy of windows new and have only used it on this macbook. Also I don't have any data under windows (nothing I care about, anyway) only some music and other data under Mac OSX.
which brings me to another issue. When I log into windows, it says, "This copy of Windows is not genuine." But it is!
So these are my issues~
~how do I get windows drivers to fix keyboard issues?
~is it possible to uninstall windows and reinstall it so it has more gigs?
~why to goodness is it telling me this copy of windows isn't genuine?
~and I'm saying all this @ once because I don't know where to begin and I would really appreciate your help and time.
I have been using my MBP (2010, i7 17" model) with a 24" HP external HDMI LCD monitor. The connection is via the Apple's Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. It was working perfectly the first day I tried. However, when I connected the external monitor to the MBP yesterday, I found that the LCD screen of the external monitor was blinking. It lasted for about 5 minutes and then the problem was gone by itself. I have just reconnected my MBP to the monitor again. The problem reappears. Anybody knows what is going on and how to fix it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy MBP was recently squished in a motorcycle accident and its hard drive and superdrive were destroyed. Is it possible to buy a new hard drive, put it in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, then install OS X on it using the discs that came with my destroyed MBP in a different Mac, then put the hard drive into the squished computer and have it use that hard drive as its startup disk? The motherboard on the squished computer is fine, I just can't install OS X on it because it has a broken superdrive.

My Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.1 will not accept the update to 10.7.2 or 10.7.3. I know that there have been some MacBook Pro's that wont accept the install. I have run disk utility and repaired disk permissions and verified the disk. I cant boot off a disk as Lion is a direct download from the App store. I have read that 10.7.2 was very buggy and some people were restorong back to 10.7.1. Can I update to 10.7.3 from 10.7.1. I have also tried the stand alone installers. The same problem the .dmg downloads and opens I run the install package which validates and runs. When I am prompted to restart a message comes up same unexpected error ocurred unable to install and a restart option. Its driving me nuts.

I have an iPad 32GB WiFi and a MacBook Pro as well so I was trying very hard to justify myself in getting an 11" MBA but ending up talking myself out of it. The 13" MBP is perfect for my uses. It's already lightweight and portable as it is. After playing with the 11" in the Apple store, I was impressed on how light it was. This no doubt blows away any netbook or any notebook in it's weight class in terms of size and performance. However, the MBP's battery life, hard drive space, and processing power OUTWEIGHS the reasons of dumping my 13" MBP for the Air. Also, I have it hooked up to a 21.5 Inch HP monitor at home and it's good enough to use as a main computer at home, and light enough to take on the road.
If I needed to lookup something quickly in bed or around the house, that's where the iPad comes in. If I needed to send a quick e-mail, my HTC Evo is already great at doing that. If I didn't have a 13" MBP or even the iPad, I would have most likely went ahead and purchased the MBA. Just now at this point, spending another $1000+ or getting rid of my MBP doesn't make much sense... yet.
I recently upgraded my stock HDD to a SSD and moved the HDD into the optibay. I was hoping that using the command pmset -a disksleep 1 would mean the 5400rpm drive would go to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity and I would get nice SSD silence It usually does but something is making it spin up again all the time. I am hardly running anything on my MBP.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI think this has been discussed but can't find it. In a SSD+HDD setup, should I put the SSD in the primary bay or in the optibay (replacing the superdrive). I believe there is a setup that has issues with sleep or motion sensor whatever, but I can't recall what the preferred setup is.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been lurking MacRumors ever since 'the wait for Arrandale' began and finally decided to sign up now so I could post this thread. I've been a Windows user for a long time now and I have a Win7 rig at home. However, I'll be going to uni later this year so I need a good portable notebook that's suitable for the common mailing 'n surfing, but also for doing some programming in Eclipse (Java) and PHP work etc. I still have my Win7 box at home for gaming and things that require larger screensize, but for the notebook... I feel really attracted to OSX with a MBP.
It will be my first Mac, but my desktop dualboots with OSX and I love it. So that's why I have decided that my school notebook will be a Mac. This is why I have been closely watching the rumors for the new MBPs and ofcourse I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the 13" model still had a C2D cpu... It's not that I need a beefed up CPU in my notebook (... I have a 3.6 GHz quad at home ), but it feels 'wrong' to buy a MBP 13": even the 2009 MacBook has a C2D, so what will the MB 2010 update bring? Is it really worth the extra money? Anyone with a similar situation?
I'm using a Corsair 120 GB Force SSD, a MCE OptiBay Kit, and a Hitachi 500 GB 7200 rpm drive. Everything works great when the SSD is in the hard drive bay, and the Hitachi is in the OptiBay. I'd prefer to swap the arrangement so the Hitachi can be protected by the sudden motion sensor, but when the SSD is in the OptiBay OS X won't recognize it. I've tried booting from the install disc to use Disk Utility, but it only shows the Hitachi drive as if the SSD isn't in the machine. I've throughly checked the installation; it appears correct, and as I said everything works fine with the drives swapped. I've also tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, per the instructions in Apple's KB.
