MacBook :: 13" Late 2006 Won't Boot
Feb 25, 2010I have a 13" MacBook (White 2.0GHz/1 GB/80 GB) that will not boot. I've tried the troubleshooting tips on the Apple website to no avail. When I turn it on, the light on the front stays light, I can hear the HD spin up, etc. The screen flickers as if it is getting power, but no chimes or sounds whatsoever. I've also tried to reseat RAM, used different RAM, but no dice. I'm hoping that there are a few other things I can try before I'm left with getting a new logic board.

Mar 13, 2009I have a Mac Pro 2006 edition with an ATI 1900XT video card. This is working just fine, and I can boot into Mac OS X and Windows Vista via Boot Camp.
I just purchased a Sapphire 4870 video card. My plan was to remove the 1900XT and plug in the 4870, and always boot into Vista. I realize that since this card is not a "Mac" card I will not be able to use Mac OS X. I also expected from my reading that I would not be able to hold down the option key at boot time to select my boot drive. I figured if I had a need to get back into OS X, I'll put the 1900XT back in for that.
As long as the Mac is configured to boot Windows, I thought that this setup would work fine. With the 4870 I expected that I would hear the bootup gong and then eventually see Vista start to boot up.
So, with that in mind, I performed the switch last night. I removed the 1900XT and installed the 4870. I had to run an additional power lead from the spare molex connector by the DVD drive to the 4870 since it requires two power connections. The 1900XT only needs one.
I plugged everything in, and turned on the Mac. I heard the startup gong. So far so good.
Then, my screen turns almost completely white (a very light gray) and I see a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner. The hard drives begin to seek and it sounds like things are booting... however I never get to the Vista boot selection screen (I actually have two Vista installs on two separate drives, so I always get the boot selection screen to decide which drive to boot from.) I also never hear a Vista startup sound... it's almost as if it is booting into Mac OS X instead of Vista.
At this point I am stumped and I'm hoping somebody here in the forum knows what is going wrong. Does my 4870 not have enough power? Do I have to have a Mac-compatible video card plugged in even if I don't plan on using it? Is what I'm trying to do just impossible?
Mac Pro :: 2006-early 2008 Will Not Boot
Jun 1, 2012I recently got this Mac Pro (Model number A1186, EMC 2113) with two Quad Core 2.66 GHz Intel Xeon 5150 processors, 16GB of RAM (both RAM riser slots completely filled with 4x2GB sticks of 667MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM each), 2x1TB clean HDDs, and an ATI Radeon HD4870 (512MB DDR5 memory) video card with 2 DVI ports and an S-video port. (I bought the HD4870 later after I found that the one that came with it, an ATI X1900 XT, was part of a recall [sadly this recall ended in 2011.] Plus, the fans on the X1900 were revving up REALLY loud.)The reason I'm posting here is because the darn thing will not "boot." The machine starts up fine (HDDs spin up, lights on the RAM risers illuminate momentarily, etc.), but there is no output out of either of the DVI ports. Not even a gray Apple screen. I have tried the DVI cord and the monitor on two different machines and they both work perfectly fine, and now I have no other Mac available to test the video card on. I'll just have to assume for now that it works. The video card, after the machine is turned on, has three of the four diagnostic LEDs lighted.
The ones that light up are D1601, D1602, and D1603; the other one, D603, does not light up. After some searching around on Google for a little while and sifting through forum after forum, they all seemed to agree upon the fact that these lights were from the two internal power cables (D1602 and D1603) not being plugged in and that there was a critical temperature error (D1601). Note that a) both power cables are in both power slots and hooked in securely and b) these lights turn on immediately after pressing the power button. A light tug from both ends on both cables assures that these cables are not going anywhere soon, and I doubt that there would be such a heating issue as soon as I press the power button, especially since all the fans are running fine. My first thought was that maybe the logic board wasn't getting enough power, but I have no idea on how to check this as almost everything besides the RAM risers and the extension slots are covered by something.Another problem I found is that some of the diagnostic LEDs that should be lighting up, aren't. Out of all the lights, the ones that do light up are the TRICKLE light and the EFI light. I guess it's good that the CPU lights aren't lighting up, but what about the the GPU and POWER lights? Shouldn't those be lighting up too?I also tried booting up from a Snow Leopard disc (there isn't any internal CD/DVD drive [the previous owner removed it for whatever reason], so I've been using an external CD/DVD drive).
When I plugged in my Apple USB keyboard, I decided to press the caps lock key and see if it would light up green. No dice. I tried all 5 USB ports on the machine and none of them worked. But how did the CD/DVD drive work? It spun up when I turned the machine on. So since the keyboard can't be recognized I am unable to boot from a CD, or anything else for that matter.One more issue: there is no startup chime! Tried turning it off and on many different times trying some potential solutions out and not once was there a startup chime. I know for sure this is a huge issue.reconfiguring the RAM (which I inserted per Apple's instructions), resetting the SMC, resetting the PRAM (which wouldn't have worked anyways since the keyboard isn't recognized), and resetting the NVRAM (which, again, probably wouldn't have worked since the keyboard isn't recognized.)So here are my problems.

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp 3.2 Update Uninstalls Boot Camp On 2006?
Nov 21, 2010In retrospect, I should have ignored it when Apple Software Update told me about the Boot Camp 3.2 upgrade for my 2006 Mac Pro running x64 Win 7 ultimate. When I ran it, it overwrote my blue tooth driver and my keyboard stopped working. Thanks for the folks at Mac Rumors forums, I was able to go through the procedure to get it working again, and I also had to update the video driver (again) from ATI for my 3800.
So then I decide to reboot into MacOS and discover that my icon for selecting the boot disk was gone, not to mention any directory or programs in the start menu. This happen to anyone else? Do I have to downgrade to 3.1 or does anyone have a recommendation to get 3.2 working?
Mac Mini :: Slow Boot With Usb Connected On 2006?
Jul 5, 2012My Mini Mac (early 2006) was working ok till 2 days ago when the boot times went into the 4 minute range with the USB CD printer from primera pluged in. I check the firm ware on both devices and they are current.

Jun 22, 2012MacBookPro 2006 While cleaning the keyboard, the tab key came completely off. Nothing is broken, the little plastic thing is still in one piece. I can't seem to fit it all back together to get the tab key to stay in place.

May 2, 2012So I was using my early 2006 MacBook (1.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, tiny amount of RAM) to view a YouTube video, and it froze (gave me rotating rainbow thingy). Since this happens often, I got up to put the computer on the table and do something else. When I picked the computer up, the power cord caught on the table and was pulled off of the computer. Since the battery is 100% dead, the computer shut off abruptly. I've also done this before without trouble. When I go to turn it on, however, now the screen flashes white for a split-second (normal), and I get a gray screen. Eventually, I get a flashing folder with ?. I've tried reseating the hard drive, and pressing down various keys when it starts up, but to no avail. I have a Genius Bar appointment tomorrow, but I was wondering if I could fix it for free... I'm not sure what OS it is, but it's OS X Tiger, I think.

Mac :: 2006 MacBook Won't Start In My System?
Aug 28, 2010I have a 2006 Core Duo MacBook. I shut it down the other day and nothing unusual happened. But, now when I push the power button there's no response at all. Nothing. No lights, no response, no chimes, no screen flicker.Yes, I've read all posts I can find on this and nothing has helped. I've followed the SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and can't zap PRAM since it doesn't even chime. Battery shows a full five lights and the MagSafe cord shows a green LED. I've tried all sorts of booting with just battery, just power, leaving both out overnight but can't get any sort of response. I don't hear any fan motion or HDD whirring up. The power button doesn't seem to be stuck though--it's flush with the case and still gives that slight tactile "click" when depressed. I checked that the RAM's set properly.

The left fan has stopped working so now the left side of the laptop is considerably hotter than the right. I'm from the UK and so is the laptop but I'm traveling around the US at the moment so I was just gonna take it into the next Apple Store I come across.
Also, if I do take it in, what are the chances they'd charge me to fix it? My applecare expired, typically, about 2 months ago.
MacBook :: Late 2006 Will Not Turn On
Dec 1, 2009I turned my computer on in school, and it would not start up past the white screen. I turned it on when I got home, and it gets to the blue screen, and then hangs. I turn it off, and when i turn it back on, the screen flashes and it goes off. I take out the battery and run it off the adapter. It flashes and nothing happens. However, I can hear it churning, but I see nothing on the screen. The sounds are still being made, and they stop after I take out the power cord. I have backups and my new computer that i ordered left week, is on the way.

Jan 26, 2010I have MBP Tiger 10.4.11 intel powerbook, purchased in '06 when they were initally released, & the logic board was replaced twice under Apple Care warranty. Past problems have been a nightmare to say the least. Has been doing OK tho' with some minor glitches since warranty expired. This week, it has begun randomly doing all sorts of strange things without command such as the following: drawing squares in the middle of a page, highlighting within any application, highlighting names of files, dragging names of files at random, dragging applications out of dock, dragging names of files without command, dragging items out of sidebar. (I have the box checked to ignore accidental input from the trackpad; under trackpad, only clicking & dragging are checked), I've zapped the pram to restore defaults and repaired permissions. Tried to run the Tech Tools CD, but it made an odd noise when I held the C key down upon restart and the disk didn't work.

MacBook :: Late 2006 Not Start Fully
Sep 18, 2010It's from late 2006, but the RAM (3GB) and HD (Western Digital 595GB) are not original. That said, I'm confident neither of these are the cause, as I've had 'em installed for 2 years and 4 months, respectively. The problem: I press the power button. Computer makes the starting sound. Fan whirs on. Grayish-blue screen with Apple logo. Spinning tick wheel underneath. You know the drill. But then, it just suddenly and inexplicably turns off. Fan off, black screen, no HD activity. Nothing. Aaand repeat...nothing seems to change.
This started 10 minutes ago. I'm on a friend's computer now, since I'm at college - this also means that I do not have my installation DVD or indeed any of my wide array of computer-fixing tech components save for my mini screwdriver set. Since I know it's gonna come up - The last thing I did on the computer was shut it down while it installed the latest update for Safari (which I don't use). Seemed everything was going okay - it turned off and I left for dinner, came back all set to write an essay and the darn thing won't make it to the login screen. So naturally, there are no error messages or anything like that. No weird beeps or noises from the HD or elsewhere........................

Oct 20, 2010I'm trying to make an educated guess regarding the usage experience of the base 11.6" Air by using my 2006 17" iMac for reference. Basically, it boils down to processor generation and speed, which I need help understanding.
iMac = Intel Core Duo T2400 "Yonah" 1.83GHz
11.6" Air = Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4GHz
Other specs I believe are either same or better in the Air:

how these two computers compare in terms of usage? My current iMac runs Photoshop CS5 tolerably fast and plays 1080p video just fine.

Dec 4, 2010I have a 15" MBP from around 2006, the one where they first introduced the new magsafe connecters.It's started to make a rattling noise which is very rythmic leading me to believe its the fans. Several years ago it started to make a clicking noise but that stopped and until recently it's been fine.
If it is the bearings on the fans or something like that, how much would that cost to fix?The machine is well out of warranty now.
MacBook :: Finding Wrist Pad Cracked 2006
May 7, 2009So my macbook's wrist pad (right side) has been cracked for awhile now. Started out with a small crack, then growing almost 4cm and then snapping off part of the plastic. I tried superglueing it back on (im resourceful ) but it didn't hold. Now I have a 4cm long piece of plastic missing from my wrist pad, and crusty superglue residue left where my wrist goes.
The left side is starting to crack as well, although, not as bad.
Figured I would ask here before I take it to the apple store:
What will all need to be replaced? Will just the wrist pad be replaced or is it attached to the keyboard

Oct 5, 2009I've got a late 2006 MacBook Pro and installed the Wireless N enabler a while back. I've got Snow Leopard now, and the card still reads as N capable in both Network Utility and System Profiler. I've sometimes been able to connect at N speeds, but not always. For example, right now I'm on my office's wireless network. Another guy has a MacBook Pro (a year newer than mine so it shipped with N enabled), but I can only get 54 speeds, while he can get 130. Any ideas? Could it just be a router setting? I option+clicked on the AirPort menu item and took a screenshot. My coworker is also on Channel 6, at 2.4GHz
