A friend accidently spilled water on her Macbook and now when she turns on the laptop, it will start and as soon as it goes to the home screen it will shut off. What exactly could the water have damaged?

Would my Macbook get water damage if I took it into the shower with me?Now what I mean is would the water damage sensors go off if I left my Macbook sitting on the floor while I have a shower? Would the steam set them off?

I came across one guy's post that completely taking the laptop apart (guided by an intricate YouTube video) and cleaning the internal components with a special alcohol would solve this nightmare for me. Is there an easy way to fix this? Everything else works perfectly fine except those keys. When i press the delete caps lock comes on.
View 10 Replies View RelatedLast night (laptop was unplugged, off but with battery in) I accidently dropped a small amount of water eg like a cap amount on the keyboard/mouse area.I wiped it off & thought nothing if it as it was a small amount.Woke up this morning, tried to switch it on but nothing. I put in the charger cable but still nothing, then I could smell some burning so quickly disconnected charger & battery.

Surprisingly, it continued running and I cleanly shut it down (yes, managed to do it while it was upside down). Took out the battery. Such a bummer.So I started taking it apart so I could air out all of the components.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Macbook that I was carrying in my backpack in one of those neoprene cases along with my water bottle (silly, I know...but it hasn't ever spilled prior to now!). I walked around for about 5-10 minutes at which point I noticed the bottom of my backpack was wet. I immediately opened it up and found that there was water on the bottom 2 inches of my case. I pulled my computer out and there was sort of a sheen of water on the front and back 2 inches on the side with all the ports. I then wiped it off. The screen came on when I opened it (it had not been off) but I turned it off and now I have it leaning so that if there is any water in the ports it will drain out.

However, I have never split anything on my laptop nor has anyone else. I carry it around with me all the time. I thought at first it might be damage due to a shock as a dropped it a few months ago and it has a slight dent on a corner.

I got out the shower n pressed the pause button to stop the music. While that i notice couple of spot of water around my return button just a little. Nothing happened to the computer after using it for about 1 hours. So i left and came home around 7 hours later, got on the macbook air n then it kept prompting the shutdown menu option screen. From there it would just go to constant reboot. Is this due to water damage at all? or is it just a coincidence. Because my black macbook has had way more water on it before n its perfectly fine.

I can still turn it on but most of the keyboard isn't working properly. I got it back in July 2007 (15" 2.4ghz 160gb) and I think I'm going to buy a new one. I managed to get all of my school work off of it even thought it took awhile and was very frustrating. My question is, is there anyway to completely wipe the hard drive then sell it? View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm excited about the re-vamped MacBook Air, and am considering a 13" model. Much to my dismay, no illuminated keyboard anymore! I understand keeping certain options only for the Pro to encourage upgrading, but this one may be a deal-breaker.
Since the keys are the same style, would it be possible to take off all the keys, swap out the board underneath and replace it all with the backlit counterparts from the older MacBook Air? What all would be involved?
Can anyone tell me if they have upgraded from the previous 13" mbp to the one that was recently released. Is the battery much better and is the speed increase noticeable?

What would you advise? What to do? New or old? If the 3.06 was a bit cheaper I would definitely go for that as I think it is better machine, but for so close a price is it better get new?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo my brother spilled a cup of milk on his Macbook. Its the white older gen from 06' ish. Now I took it apart, how can I tell if the macbooks actually water damaged. Where are the markers that change color? Also, from what I can gather I think the keyboard has ruined but not the motherboard. The charger lights up green when there is no battery, but doesn't if the battery is attached. I tried the original battery and one from my working macbook, does the same thing on both batteries. So it's not that. Im thinking it will start up if i replace the keyboard because it probably got ruined so the power button won't send a signal to the motherboard, therefore wont turn on.
I don't want to take apart my working macbook and risk ruining it with static discharge or something, unless theres a good possibility that the keyboard is the problem on the broken one. I see milk residue on the battery prong and around the front left corner. So im assuming the battery ribbon on the macbook and the keyboard itself got ruined. I do not see anything wrong or milk residue on the motherboard or its surrounding components. Also worst comes to worst and it is ruined. What is the best thing to do with it? eBay?
So someone gave me a Power Mac G5 2004 June. Fourty bucks. Sweet deal right? Checked it out, all parts are intact besides harddrive. plugged it in for kicks. Not even the fans turn on. (whatever, i'll just gut it and put my pc in it) apparently, the waterblock leaked and probably hit the mobo or psu. anyways, is there a possability of the waterblock/cooler system to be removed? any specific guides or something?

I was ripping a DVD last night and also surfing web and a couple other things all at same time (have 4gb memory) and the macbook crashed and was just stuck. It stayed that way for a long time, so I held down the power button and turned it off. After that, I couldn't get it to book back up. It would just stay stuck at the grey screen with the spinning wheel.
So I got out my original DVD disk and reinstalled. I do not remember how it worded it, but I did the option where it kept my previous system information. I now have Leopard installed again and I have a folder called "previous system" and I can view my old desktop files, applications, etc.
What are the reasons and solutions for the slow running of a Mac OS X System? I did an archive and reinstall a while ago to solve a drag and drop problem but since then the systems sometimes gives me what I have learn is referred to as the spinning wheel of death. I have also read somewhere else that there is a folder named the Previous Systems folder which is supposed to be where everything from the previous system (before the archive and reinstall) is stored. It was advised that this folder be thrashed to get a faster system and avoid hangs but I am a bit reluctant to touch anything that may cause further problems.

I am near the end of an extensive editing project in FCS 2 and I am having problems with the system hanging up constantly. I have 8gb of ram (the max for my machine) and my main internal drive is a 250 gb HD. I'm wondering if I can backup & delete files from my main drive to free up space and hopefully improve performance, and if it will cause any problems.
I plan to backup the Soundtrack Pro Loops to an external drive, which will free up about 21gb of space. Is there anything else that's safe to do this with (if this process is safe, that is.)? Can I also backup the "Previous systems" folder & delete it from my main drive?
I recently check my 150 GB hard drive and noticed that I only have 10 GTB left. While going through my files to check what I don't need or want, I noticed that I have a folder called Previous Systems. Inside this folder are two other folders with dates for names. Each folder has approximately 20 GB for a total of 40 GB. Can I simply toss this folder? It does not seem to do anything. The folder must have been created from a backup some time ago. I don't recall doing that.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded to mavericks. Everything works fine except Time Machine. I want to continue using my 'old' time machine backup on an external server. When I try to reconnect I get the following message: The disk image "..." is in use Try ejecting the disk image.
I have disconnected and reconnected to the external server. This had no effect. At first glance it seems I am able to access my old backup clicking "Browse other backup disks". But the I don't get my backed up files. It's stuck at today Â
i had the macbook Core 2 Duo for About 8 months and it was working great.yesterday i left a file download in firefox for 5 hours then went back to check on it , it was working FINE, Then i got Back after 2 minutes and the screen is suddenly white and not showing anything!i shut down the laptop and restarted , there was a chime and just white screen...i connected the laptop to an external monitor AND EVERYTHING IS WORKING on the external screen but the laptop screen is white!!!i tried resetting the PRAM and i tried resetting the SMC twice but nothing Changed

So after doing some research online I see that Aluminum is very resistant to rusting to the fact that it usually rust after your computer die or something...
But anyway what I wanted to know if that if I use water to clean the lid would it accelerate the rusting or corrosion?
