OS X :: Backing Up Previous System Folders To External Drive
Aug 6, 2010
I am near the end of an extensive editing project in FCS 2 and I am having problems with the system hanging up constantly. I have 8gb of ram (the max for my machine) and my main internal drive is a 250 gb HD. I'm wondering if I can backup & delete files from my main drive to free up space and hopefully improve performance, and if it will cause any problems.
I plan to backup the Soundtrack Pro Loops to an external drive, which will free up about 21gb of space. Is there anything else that's safe to do this with (if this process is safe, that is.)? Can I also backup the "Previous systems" folder & delete it from my main drive?
I have used Time Machine to backup my data on an external hard drive with ample space for the past year. However, for the past month or so when plug in my hard drive and try to back up my files using Time Machine, it completely freezes my computer, to the point where I need to hold down the power button for 10+ seconds and completely restart. At first I thought this might be due to not enough RAM, but discovered it does this even if all other programs are closed.
I recently check my 150 GB hard drive and noticed that I only have 10 GTB left. While going through my files to check what I don't need or want, I noticed that I have a folder called Previous Systems. Inside this folder are two other folders with dates for names. Each folder has approximately 20 GB for a total of 40 GB. Can I simply toss this folder? It does not seem to do anything. The folder must have been created from a backup some time ago. I don't recall doing that.
I have recently bought a MacBook Pro (10.9.4) with a 128 Gb solid state drive. My intended backup strategy is to have all my documents on an external 1 Tb USB3 drive (i.e, not in the MacBook Pro) and to back up that drive AND my Macbook (system, applications, mail etc) to another, powered 2Tb drive. I’m assuming I’ll have to partition the 2Tb drive first, by the way.
Info: MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), 2.9 Ghz Intel Core i7
I am going to backup the main system drive though. I'm thinking shall I use Time Machine to back it up or use a 3rd party application to back it up and make it boot-able at the same time?
I'm wondering if it is possible to set up auto backup that includes an external hard drive. I kep a lot of data on an external, and back up manually periodically, but want to have an automated process to do so. I'm not sure if Time Capsule or ClickFree or Maxtor could be set up to handle that.
I have an external drive that is the same size as the internal drive in my mbp. I have bootcamp partition. How do I back up both partitions onto my external drive?
Im using a macbook pro 13" retina, running yosemite 10 10.
I use a 1Tb ext hard drive for storage, rather than the macs internal storage, I am thinking of using a 2Tb ext drive for back up. When I back up will the attached 1Tb ext drive be backed up at the same time?
Info: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)
I have a question that I should probably know the answer to, but I don't. I have a Western Digital My Book on the way and I am going to back everything on my Macbook up on there so I can do an archive and install.
Is it possible to put applications like Mac:Office 2008 on the hard drive so that I don't have to install it again, or can you only back up certain files on externals? I am not very familiar with backing up data.
In case my computer is stolen again, I need to back-up /duplicate my hard drive. Any recommendations for best/proven products? Looking at Seagate Free Agent but unsure of software unless it comes with it.
Can anyone tell me how to tell Time Machine how to find an external hard drive (that is attached to myiMac) that I'd like to back up? If recoginizes it in a window for selecting a drive to back up to, but I can't seem to find any window to tell it what drives I want backed up. It backs up the internal hard drive on the iMac.
Does anyone know of an application that will let me back up sync certain folders on my computer to my external hard drive. Because I use two different computers (iBook and a thinkpad(Windows)) I need to keep them both the same (Documents wise) So, I have an external hard drive. Which I would like to be able to sync certain folders on my ibook to my hard drive. I am running iBook G4 Mac OS X 10.4.11.
I recently converted over to a Macbook Pro from PC and had all of my PC data saved to an external Hard Drive. I can retreive the data fine, but I can't save anything to the Hard Drive. I have plenty of room on my Macbook, but old habits are hard to break and I like to back everything up at least once a week.
I do not want to reformat my External Hard drive as there is ALOT of information on there that would be lost. So, how can I copy things over there, or drag them over to the External? When I try, it gives me the circle with the line through it.
And if you have time, tell me about Time Machine. I am interested, but it seems like alot of work, because I would have to copy everything off the hard drive, let Time Machine reformat it, and then copy it back. Seems VERY time consuming.
External hard drive is 2TB and has approximately 90GB on it.
I have a macbook and I'm having trouble backing up my pictures on an external hard drive. The Macbook won't install the backup drive soft ware? It is a new Seagate hard drive from costco.
I used SuperDuper to back up a project to an external Thunderbolt drive. The files are all there on the external drive but the references are still directed to the original drive (an external USB 3.0 drive).
I tried changing the locations of all files and then consolidating, but it still references the original drive. If I eject that original drive and just start FCPx from the copy on the Thunderbolt drive I just get a lot of "missing file" red flags.
How can I fix this? I would like to avoid doing a "duplicate project" every time as the project is over a terrabyte and it takes a long time to copy. SuperDuper only copies the files that have changed.

I'm currently backing up my MB (2007) to an external USB drive using Time Machine.
I also have a 250gb external drive full of everything I need for work and my music collection. Basically I've realised that if this drive goes down I will probably not be able to do my job, and won't have anything fun to do the rest of the time either because all my stuff will be gone!
This data drive is used daily on Windows XP, 2000 and Vista machines so it's formatted in FAT or NTFS (can't remember which) that Time Machine won't back up from. So TM isn't an option.
Do any of you backup experts know if there's a piece of Mac software or a particular model of external drive that I can get to basically synchronise TWO external drives? I need to be able to back up my external data onto another external drive on a daily basis so I can sleep at night.
So here's the deal: I have a 64Gb iphone with 1GB available, and a 256Gb macbook retina with 17Gb free space.
The iphone backups are taking up a lot of space on the macbook. I looked into moving the backup files to an external drive and using a soft link to link it all together, but that's a lot more complicated than is necessary, so I just pressed option when opening itunes and created a new library on the external drive with 1TB free space (as reported by Finder).
I can verify that the computer is using the external library as when I transfer purchases, that library on the external grows in size And doesn't have any of my old content. However, when I try to back up the phone (which is around 30GB) I get the error message that itunes cannot backup the phone because there is not enough space left on the computer, even though the external disk has a terabyte left. I know it's because the macintosh hd has only 17 Gb, is there any way to get round it?
Info: MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), Itunes upto date
I have 2 macs in my house.. a macbook pro and a macbook air. I have an old dell desktop running windows 7 that has a terabyte external harddrive hoooked up to it. I want to be able to use it as a network time machine drive. Both laptops are running snow leopard. I was wondering is this possible and if so, how can I do it. Currently I am able to see the desktop and the external hardrive on my network from the macs, and I am able to drag and drop onto them, however I want to be able to use time machine.
I have a mid 2011 iMac with a primary SSD drive (256GB) and a secondary ATA drive (1TB).I have created several folders and sub folders for photos on the secondary ATA drive for safe keeping before burning to a DVD.However lately when I try to access these folders on the ATA drive the finder window is not showing these sub folders I have created and stored several photos in.And I get the spinning pinwheel of color as the system freezes up.
I have a crashed ibook here and i am trying to safe all the files on an external USB disk with a Linux Ubuntu live CD.
I can mount both the disks, the NTFS USB disk and the HFS mac disk.
I can copy files in between, the only problem is that i can not copy the user and home folders because "i am not the owner"
Is there a way around for this? i already tried it with sudo commands, and in the GUI i cannot change any thing on the maps for ownership or passwords.
I just bought a new iMac with OS X Mavericks, and when I transferred my data from my old iMac with Snow Leopard, all my mailboxes appeared, but they were empty. How can I get back my saved emails?
I've been having a lot of trouble with Time Machine lately. I used to have a 300GB partition on a second drive dedicated to backups. Time machine is set up to backup just my user directory and the calculated backup size is 200gb. There are a couple of folders on my desktop that I also exclude. I've had it working this way for months now (before Snow Leopard came out). I started getting problems a few weeks ago. I formatted my Time Machine drive and got it to start a backup again, however, it kept running out of space without being able to complete the backup. I've been ignoring it since then because I knew I'd be getting some extra hard drives this week. After my new hard drive reshuffle, I now have a 500gb drive dedicated to Time Machine backups.
My backup size is still only 200gb but my initial backup would count up to 205gb/205gb or whatever it was and then keep going for hours with both the "done" and the "total amount" numbers gradually going up. It finally completed and I see that my 500gb drive only has about 30gb free or so. A bit of right clicking and get info clicking later and I soon find the root of the problem. The two large folders on my desktop that I've set to exclude have been backed up. I've tried killing the time machine settings file in the library and have rebuilt the exclusion list from scratch. I've also reformatted the backup drive several times. I've zeroed it once. Partitioned it into 16 partitions and wiped it again into one.
I did: "Enter Time Machine Preferences" ---->"Options"----->"Exclude These Items from Backups"----->"Excluded Folder FOO". Today I go into TM, and there is folder FOO, backed up! WTF? Why is TM not respecting my exclusion of FOO from the backups?
I have a macbook and I am connecting an external hard drive via USB 2.0.
When I want to delete a folder it gives me "error 1407". There is nothing in the folder and it is not protected in any way. It was a folder created by me only a month or so ago. ALL of the folders on my external hard drive are like this. No files are effected with this issue.
I have a couple of FW drives hooked up to my iMac and I just discovered I can't trash anything from them. Actually, ever since upgrading to Lion I've been having all sorts of permission issues, but that's another discussion. In this case I've gone to the info windows for these drives and I have only read premission and I can't seem to change it. I've done all the usual things to do so but it remains stuck on "read only." I'm regularly repairing permissions so I don't see that working, tho I haven't tried trashing anything from these drives in a while so I don't know how long it's been this way.
I set up time machine to back up my computers hard drive and additionally to back up another external drive that is attached. however, it only is backing up one folder in my other external drive and nothing else.
I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD.
When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??
i successfully rerouted iTunes so that the program would find my music library on external hard drive. Two days ago, my Apple MacBook computer was updated to the Lion operating system. iTunes was also updated. Now I have to go back into iTunes and give the program new instruction to go find the music files on external hard drive. My folder on external hard drive, called "iTunes Music," contains various music files and also, I notice, a folder called "iTunes." Within that "iTunes" folder, the following folders or files are located: [code] I do not understand any of this. I do not understand WHICH FILE OR FOLDER I should instruct iTunes to go to in order to find the desired music files.Once the desired files are found, they should appear in the iTunes window on screen. This is not happening.
I have tried holding down the Option key while starting iTunes, which yields a window that asks for me to CHOOSE LIBRARY. I choose the iTunes library file ( iTunes Library.itl) that is located on external hard drive. However, NOTHING HAPPENS. iTunes does not do anything. When the program opens, nothing is visible in the iTunes window, where normally songs are listed. No playlists on the lefthand side. NOTHING.
i have been trying to copy files on macbook air to my external hard disk which i used for my windows pc, n=but im unable to do so. and i even cannot delete the files on the hard disk. but i can copy the files on hard disk to my air.
