My gf's old Black MacBook keeps eating her hard drives. So far she's gone through 5! Last one died just sitting in the living room floor. I'm wondering what could be wrong, I'm thinking maybe a bad logic board? I've bought her a MacBook Air to replace it but I'd like a project trying to fix that old MacBook.
I'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...
Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.
Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.
I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.
whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back
I have a program called Free Memory. It shows you how much available RAM you have left to use. Last week, my available RAM, which is usually somewhere between 3GB-5GB, was down at about 250MB! I checked the RAM usage in Activity Monitor, and it showed that Quicktime was using about 5GB of RAM. Yes 5GB.I closed Quicktime and the RAM jumped back up.I reopened it and I could actually watch as my RAM just poured off. In less than 2 minutes, it went from 5GB available to about 100 MB again.Today, the same thing happened, but the RAM sucker was Shockwave. Has anybody heard of this happening before? If so, what is the solution? Here is some more info. In the "console" I often get these --- Exception Type:
EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)A few months back, the Genius Bar people wiped my hard drive clean and we reloaded my stuff from a back up. Maybe there are still issues.
I called the help support and I told them that my back up is taking up all my disk space. They told me tolocate the time machine back up in hd and them delete the time machine and i did not know how to do this. how to get rid of this back up. I am trying omi sweep but I still cant find where all the back up data is coming from.
I have a Imac 20 with a small 3.5 hard drive and I have bought a bigger 360 gig 3.5 hard drive to replace the old one. I have the new one in an external case with USB 2.0 right now. Is there some way I can transfer the entire contents of the old hard drive on to the new one and then swap out the old drive with the new drive and not miss a beat?
I just recently bought a Macbook Pro about 2 weeks ago. Everything's been working great up until today. First I noticed that my MBP wouldn't recognize my phone when I plugged it into the USB. (Its an Android phone - don't bash me for it) I just thought it was my phone at first. A couple hours later I tried transferring some files to my external hard drive (1TB iomega) and my MBP wouldn't recognize it. I plugged in another one of my external HD (320 GB Maxtor), same problem. I then tried my other external HD (500 GB Western Digital), same problem. I tried a different USB port, different cord, rebooting the mac, nothing seems to be working. It will recognize my ipod touch tho. Being that its happening on 4 different devices, I doubt its the devices themselves. Its not the cord because I tried 2 different ones, 3 if you count the one for my phone which uses micro USB.
I am very new to the mac world so other than the things I have tried already, I don't have a clue what to try next. Oh yea, one more thing, all my hard drives are formatted for pc being that I just recently bought my MBP, I had all these hard drives before my mac. And they have all connected fine to my MBP in the past week or so.
Anyone knows if you can have exclusively one hard drive to run mac and the other to run windows? I know about changing the cd slot to accommodate another hard drive. So I was just wondering if anyone has any idea whether this would work couldn't find anything concerning this online and can I still have the bootcamp thing where you can choose which os to choose from.
Last week, my Macbook Pro (13", Mid-2009 model) froze. I held the power button to shut it down, and when I tried to start it back up, it gave me the blinking folder of death. I tried to boot using my Snow Leopard disk to try and repair the disk, but there was no drive except my DVD drive found.
So, I brought it into a local Apple store, and the "geniuses" told me my hard drive had failed and that they could replace it for $300 (I'm 1 month out of warranty, no AppleCare). I declined the offer and bought myself a hard drive off NewEgg for $50 (Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB).
I opened the computer up, took out the old hd and put in the new one. I booted to my Snow Leopard disk to install it, and again there was no hard drive found. I tried to go through Disk Utility as well and there was no listed hd.
My old model A1150 has a very nice 750 MB hard drive (with all my files on it). I just bought a somewhat newer MBP with a 200 GB HD.Can I just swap the hard drives? Any trick to it? One has Snow Leopard, the other just Leopard.Â
Info: MacBook Pro A1150, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 2 GB Ram, using FCE 4
I have to hard drives in my powermac. And I am running out of space with the one that has the OS on it.
I want to make the 2 internal hard drives i have appear as one so i can still install and use things that say "must have mac OS installed on this drive to use" or whatever.
i've heard of people using RAID to join them, but i want details on how i could do this.
I had my first leopard problem on my 1.67 15" powerbook last night. I lost bluetooth so I restarted, I went to the activity monitor and there was a kernel task eating up 152 mb of my ram. All updates are current and I have 2gb of ram. Any ideas as to what this action is doing. I also have a dual 2.4 g5 with 3.5 gb of ram(but no kernel task issues).
I looked in iStat Pro, at then saw that Safari was eating up one entire core of my processor. I am running one window with 3 tabs, another web archive, another Google search, a Google Image search, a window with a Youtube HD video running+a tab with a Google Video search. Is this to be expected with this much running? I am using Spaces.
i have two exact same 17 inch MBPs i am thinking on selling one , one has a lot of stickers and marks on it and the data on that is not at all important (i can format the hard drive no problem). the other one body has very clean and data on that is important lots and lots of photos and videos. i want to sell the one which has clean body so i can get better $ for it. it is possible to just swap hard drives between these two identical MBPs and sell ? would that make any different in performance and also the serial number on ABOUT THIS MAC is that written on hard drive or some place else?
I just got a unibody 17''. Can I swap the hard drive in it with a 15'' Santa Rosa MBP? Just to save time installing everything plus the 15'' has a newish 7200 rpm hard drive. I noticed the trackpad System Preference is different between MBPs so I'm wondering what else is different.
I have an external hard drive that I have been using for my Pcs, and when I hook it up to my mac I cannot write to it (although I can read from it). Is it possible to write to this external hard drive?
Is there any way for me to keep my data without using an external hard drive when switching to a bigger hard drive, I just got a macbook and I wanted to upgrade from the 120gb.
I've never done this before, but I'm curious if I was to swap the hard drive from my macbook and my macbook pro if they would still boot and operate as normal?I'm plenty capable of taking them apart, I just would like to know if I can save myself the time of reinstalling the OS by just swapping the drives.
I have two Macs:1. MBP i7 - Hitachi HTS545050B9SA02 500gb (5400rpm)2. MacMini 2.0 C2D - WDC WD3200BEKT 320gb (7200rpm)Software I use: Logic Pro, Adobe, Bootcamp, and Gaming..According to the below benchmarks, the WDC scores 494, while the Hitachi scores 346.
I've had a LaCie Porsche Design for the last 6 years with no problems but with the upgrade to a MBP I'm looking to get a new portable hard drive (LaCie or another brand). My old LaCie was FW400 so I'd be looking at FW800 now. Which make and model do you use and are you happy with it's performance?
I just got a brand new Mac Book Pro. I wanted to get an external harddrive for it. I have a gift card to HP and wanted to buy one from them? Does anyone know if they are compatable? If not, anyone have any suggestions for a HD that is good, but not terribly expensive? I want one that is at least 250 GB.
So I just installed a larger hard drive in my macbook pro. As OSX was installing I decided to read reviews online (bought it in the store when I got the MBP). They're all really bad about using the drive in a MBP - [URL]. I'm installing the application software now and the hd is spining a lot and vibrating the case and making a lot more noise. I've read a few Seagate reviews and they're not much better for that size.
I want to install a huge hard drive because this is going to be my main computer for at least 8 months while I'm working away from home. Normally I have a desktop w/ a huge hard drive so I don't care what's on my laptop. Anyway, based on these reviews and how the drive has been feeling in the case, I think I might re-evaluate putting a larger drive in, and instead go with an external. I can fit all my photos and music on a 250, but I couldn't fit everything I store on my desktop on a 250.
So my first question is, is there a good, reliable 500gb or larger 5400rpm replacement hard drive for the mbp, that a lot of people like? And then the main question: I have a lot of large video files on my Windows box that are over 4gb, which is the FAT32 limit. When I transferred them from my old computer I had to rar them to smaller files and then un-rar them. This is quite annoying. If I'm gonna have an external drive, I'd like one that can be used on both windows and mac and support 4gb+ files..................
How do I "Physically" swap my hard drive from my old mac to my new macbook pro Mid 2012?I know how to swap them easily enough but when I do this I turn on the new mac and all I get is a "Circle with a line through it"
I have a stock Macbook Pro 17in i5 laptop. I just got a new hard drive. I just did a time machine backup (to an external hard drive) of everything on my computer before i switch out the old drive to a new SSD OWC...Is this enough of a back up to where once i get the new SSD drive in i simply go to the time machine and it will put everything back the way i had it on the old hard drive correct? Or is there another step i need to take to make sure i transfer all of my data safely. I cant find my parallels product key nor my Microsoft word product key so i was wondering is this going to be an issue on the new hard drive? will the computer ask for the keys or since i backed everything up in time machine will it come back like normal.
I just upgraded my 13" Macbook Pro 2.53GHz Mid 2009 to the Momentus XT 500Gb and its pretty quiet, but not practically silent like the original Hitachi 250Gb drive. It sounds like a little fan is going pretty much all the time. I also tried the Western Digital Scorpio Black and it wasn't much quieter. Are there any almost silent (fast would be nice) drives other with 320Gb+ other than SSD? Might there be a hard drive controller or something Apple loads onto their factory drives that makes them quieter?
I have a older mac mini and a 6 month old macbook pro, the mini's hard drive is full, can I take the one from the mbp, wipe it, and put it in the mini and get a larger one for the mbp? If so are there any recommendations for a HD larger then 500GB for my mbp?
Setup: MB Pro. early 2009 2.93 Ghz, 8GB RAM, 2 hard drives via optibay Request: Utility to better sleep the hard drives/fans when not being used
Problem: With the two hard drive setup, battery life is reduced. I knew this going in. So, I would like to purchase a utility that allows for better management of the MB Pro hardware so that, say when I am only reading something on screen with no needed hard drive activity, the hard drive goes to sleep faster than the current energy management application requires. This would help increase battery life some (not back to pre two drive setup, but better than now). I want to good utility and cost is no object because the cheap, even free utilities I have used in the past on other things like cleaning your mac tend to make the computer act funny (just trust me on this one).
I have used an optical caddy to fit a SSD into my macbook pro along with the existing 500GB hard drive. My next ambition is to fit 2 hard drives and a SSD inside the macbook pro. My questions are:
1) Can I use a Sata port doubler (Do they exist?) to run 2 hard drives through one sata port. (The bandwidth is there) 2) Failing the above can I use a cable linking a sata drive to the airport express slot? (is it PCI express?)
