MacBook Pro :: Old And New Hard Drives Not Recognized?

Aug 4, 2010

Last week, my Macbook Pro (13", Mid-2009 model) froze. I held the power button to shut it down, and when I tried to start it back up, it gave me the blinking folder of death. I tried to boot using my Snow Leopard disk to try and repair the disk, but there was no drive except my DVD drive found.

So, I brought it into a local Apple store, and the "geniuses" told me my hard drive had failed and that they could replace it for $300 (I'm 1 month out of warranty, no AppleCare). I declined the offer and bought myself a hard drive off NewEgg for $50 (Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB).

I opened the computer up, took out the old hd and put in the new one. I booted to my Snow Leopard disk to install it, and again there was no hard drive found. I tried to go through Disk Utility as well and there was no listed hd.

OS X :: USB Drives Not Recognized / Mounting?

May 25, 2009

This just started happening within the past month or so. None of my USB drives are being recognized or mounted. They appear within Disk Utilities and I can verify and run checks on them, but they do not mount. This isn't limited to one device or any specific port. It happens with USB memory sticks, external Maxtor drives (two different ones) and now my Canon PowerShot camera. Basically anything the Mac would mount as an external drive has this issue, so I know it's not specific to any hardware.

I do have a work around that I found on [URL] -- If I reboot with the device plugged in and hold the 'command' key the drive gets mounted. Next time I try the device though (in the case of my camera plugging it into another computer) it's not recognized again. I basically have to do this reboot procedure any time I want to use any device.

Software :: USB Flash Drives Not Recognized

Aug 8, 2009

I have a 2008 (2/2008) 24" aluminum imac that is not recognizing certain USB flash drives now. The drive (Sony 8gb) worked before but does not now. When started up with the drive in a USB port, system profiler will find it but disk utilities will not (nor does it appear on my desktop). I have tried all other USB ports in this computer with no results. This drive still works fine on all other macs in the house. This problem is isolated only to flash drives since all other USB accessories still function fine. I recently added a Sandisk imagemate all-in-one card reader to this system and suspect that this might have caused the problem since oddly enough, my Sandisk flash drive still works fine. The only driver I installed with this reader was the application start up button (to launch iphoto).

Mac Pro :: Upgraded To OSX Lion 10.7.4 & Optical Drives Are No Longer Recognized

May 24, 2012

I have a MacPro 1,1 with a 2 x 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon and I just upgraded to OSX Lion 10.7.4. Upon upgrading my system stopped recognizing the two optical drives I had installed. Is there a patch or are there drivers that I can download to fix this? Has this happened to anyone else? I was prepared to lose access to some older software but not my optical drives!!!

When I do a "system report" through "About this mac" both of the drives are listed but they dont show up on my deskop. I have an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A and a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S202N

OS X :: Are Solid-state Drives Faster Than Hard Disk Drives?

Sep 13, 2009

I'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...

Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.

Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.

I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.

Mac Pro :: Remove Mac Raid Card From System / Drives Are Not Recognized At Boot Up

Oct 15, 2009

So I have followed a bunch of the 'MacPro with mac raid card users wanting to do bootcamp' threads. I have attempted all the hacking required but have not been successful. I heard that bootcamp 3.1 will fix this problem possibly... so in the mean time I would like to remove my SAS drives and raid card and just use the sata drives that I have to do Mac OS and Windows.

I have removed the card but when I plug the drives in and boot up the machine, the drives are not recognized. Is there some plug that I need to reconnect somewheres?

MacBook Pro :: New Hard Drive Still Won't Be Recognized

Mar 8, 2012

I've been having several problems with my mid-2009 MacBook Pro; 2 minute beachballs and failure to startup. So I've purchased a new new WD Scorpio Black thinking it was a HD issue, but after replacing my old HD with the WD, Disk Utility wouldn't recognize the new drive. So I searched around and found out that Hard Drive Cable failure is an issue on this certain MacBook. So I ordered a new Hard Drive cable and just replaced that today, thinking that my new HD would be recognized. However after going into Disk Utility via the OS X Install DVD, my new Hard Drive was still not recognized.

MacBook :: Trying To Install New Hard Drive - Not Recognized

Jul 7, 2009

I have a first gen white macbook core duo. I am trying to install a new 320GB Seagate HDD in my laptop to replace the 60Gb drive. I installed it but I can't get the OS to recognize the Hard disk when it is installed in the computer. I have no problems when it is installed in an external case. I have booted off the Leopard disk but it does not show a drive available to format, I booted off the original drive in the external case and the disk utilities does not show another drive attached. If I put the 320GB drive in the external enclosure, disk utilities recognizes it right away. I have formatted it with GUID format but it doesn't work when installed directly in the macbook.

Jul 27, 2008

I have been searching the internet for 3 days and finally gave up, besides buying another hard drive. Ill try to keep this short. i got Macbook C2D / OSX 10.4 / 80GB HDD What happened: I wanted to free up space on my macbook, so I removed my bootcamp partition buy using the bootcamp installer to merge the osx and winxp partition back together. The installer froze for 30min and i decided to manually restart (holding power button). What a mistake i made, on reboot i only get the folder with the "?" icon. Symptoms: OSX installer does not see a drive. None of the bootable linux recovery disk Ive tried can see the drive. WinXP, Win98 recover disks do not see the drive. Terminal "diskutil list" shows=

MacBook Pro :: Getting A Seagate Hard Drive Recognized Over WIFI

Feb 6, 2012

I have recently bought a Seagate external drive. It works fine for Windows over WIFI. But for the Mac, it only works when directly connected and is not recognised over WIFI - the drive is not listed under devices.  It did when I first started the drive yesterday, when I managed to copy all my files onto the external drive via WIFI.  But not today.  Perhaps related to the software update I ran last night?

MacBook Pro :: USB Hard Drive Is Not Recognized On It Running Lion

Mar 21, 2012

I have:

- Freecom ToughDrive Pro USB hard drive

- New MBP running Lion 10.7.3

When I plug the disk in an USB port in the MBP, the light that indicates operation starts blinking but very lighltly colored and the disk is not recognized by the computer. I have put data on it using iMac Snow Leopard. I have plugged the disk into a MBP running Snow Leopard and it works. I have also tried another Lion (older MBP) and it also works.

How come the disk is not mounted or shown in Disk Utility. Can it be a power issue?

I have noticed there a lot of similar posts in the forum and none has been satisfactorily solved. Is this a mayor Lion bug? If yes, how can I downgrade to Snow Leopard?

MacBook :: External Hard-drive Won't Mount Or Be Recognized

May 31, 2012

I just installed a new internal hard drive into my macbook as my old one was failing. Before doing this I backed up all of my information through Time Machine onto a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I've been using this external hard drive for the past two years and I've never had any problems with my macbook mounting it. Once I had all of my personal information backed up I took out the external hard drive and then proceeded to take out my old internal hard drive and installed the new one. I installed the Mac operating system and the Macbook started up just fine but when it came time to reload all of my personal setting using Time Machine my macbook didn't recognize that there was an external drive plugged in. I know it isn't the external drive as it mounts just fine on other laptops. how I can get my macbook to mount the drive so that I can transfer all of my information onto this new internal drive?

When I open Disk Utility the drive is there, and shown as read/write, but when I boot with option held down the drive isn't there either. MacBook Pro :: Won't Recognize Hard Drives

Oct 5, 2010

I just recently bought a Macbook Pro about 2 weeks ago. Everything's been working great up until today. First I noticed that my MBP wouldn't recognize my phone when I plugged it into the USB. (Its an Android phone - don't bash me for it) I just thought it was my phone at first. A couple hours later I tried transferring some files to my external hard drive (1TB iomega) and my MBP wouldn't recognize it. I plugged in another one of my external HD (320 GB Maxtor), same problem. I then tried my other external HD (500 GB Western Digital), same problem. I tried a different USB port, different cord, rebooting the mac, nothing seems to be working. It will recognize my ipod touch tho. Being that its happening on 4 different devices, I doubt its the devices themselves. Its not the cord because I tried 2 different ones, 3 if you count the one for my phone which uses micro USB.

I am very new to the mac world so other than the things I have tried already, I don't have a clue what to try next. Oh yea, one more thing, all my hard drives are formatted for pc being that I just recently bought my MBP, I had all these hard drives before my mac. And they have all connected fine to my MBP in the past week or so.
