MacBook :: Converting A MB Into A Desktop?
Sep 6, 2010
So I wanted to convert my macbook into a desktop. I dont mean taht I want to run in a clamshell mode but literally remove it from its casing and make it run. SO my first step was to remove the lcd from it. Which I did. Now I hooked it up to a TV that I have with a component cable but the picture on the tv is VERY bad. I dont know if its the cable or its just the computer itself. Is s-video better? The display properties only give me a choice to go upto 1024x768.

I currently have a 2006 Macbook Pro 2.0 ghz core duo, 80 GB HD, 2GB Ram running leopard (not snow leopard), and a wireless card which I think has reached the end of it's life line (the signal range of the wireless card has diminished dramatically), and a battery which last 45min on a charge and a fussy dvd drive that fails at times. Which this being said, I wanted an opinion on a couple things if it wasn't to much trouble.A. I wanted to know what could I do to "Max out" my laptop.1a. When I do "max out" my laptop would I be able to convert my Macbook Pro and use it as a desktop (just buy an external screen, keyboard, and mouse) edit: Also What could I do to prevent heating (since it would now be used as a desktop)

I am wanting to convert my parent's home videos from the late 80's and 90's to digital files. They are all on 8mm tapes and we still have the working Sony camcorder and AV cords. I would love to easily transfer them to my Macbook Pro where I can then edit the files and put them in chronological order, (some 8mm tapes start out in 1988 then jump to 1997 then back to 1993..).The only thing I have found is the Pinnacle video recorder, but I'm not sure if it's compatible with Macs and it looks like really outdated software.

I want to keep my school files on desktop two so they are all in the same place, and use desktop one as a place to perhaps save photos or other files not school related. When I swipe between desktops, the school files move between the desktops as I swipe but I want to keep them on one desktop all the time.

After converting avi files to dvd I lose audio on more than half the files. The audio works fine on the avi file. However once its converted the movie plays with no sound.
I'm currently using a free trial version of divX convertor. Then I use iDVD to burn the movie. However the problem isn't with iDVD because when I just try to play the converted movie through the divX player or quicktime there is no sound. Obviously the same holds true when I send the converted file to iDVD.
1. What is the reason for this happening?
2. Do I need to use a different convertor? Or do I need to install additional programs?
3. I'm not the most computer savvy person so please try to give a simple explanation and instruction.

Im currently doing some video converting using handbrake and I was just wondering if its ok to do this for a prolonged period of time? I have 7 movies to do, and am currently on the 3rd one. They take about 30 minutes each to complete and my cpu is currently at 84C. It fluctuates anywhere from 80C to 87C. Im just wondering if I should maybe give the cpu a break or if I can just do them all in one sitting?

I have a 2 1/2 year old MBP running SL. I recently have been having issues with the dvd drive. I have been trying to convert avi files to dvd. I have tried two different avi files and two different applications (idvd and burn). They do the conversion of the file, but when the disc is completed there seems to be files on the dvd but it cannot play. Sounds like the drive starts up, spins the disk, stops and repeats this till I eject. I get a beachball on the screen as well. Now I have tried known good DVDs and they play with no issues and games like the Sims 3 seem not to have an issue with playing in the drive. I was just trying to figure out if this is hardware related or software (apps or the files I am trying to convert) before my Applecare runs out.

my friend and I work on projects together, but he uses a Macbook Pro and I use the iMac. I like to work on projects in final cut pro and he likes iMovie. For some reason, iMovie on the Macbook Pro doesn't not take .mov files. So I have been converting them to MPEG4. But the quality isn't the same. When we put it together.

I've been Windows my entire life, but a buddy of mine told me to look at the MACbook Pro cause he knew I was into digital photography. So after a thurough look over I've come to realize that the force is strong with this one and I'm going to convert. My question is, is the system 32 or 64 bit? I'm not even sure if that's an applicable question for a MAC, I would assume so since it basic architecture.

I had old personal home video tapes which I converted to DVD's using a Video to DVD burner. Now I would like to back up the DVD's onto an external 4 T HD. I have Anytime VIdeo Converter with which I tried to convert the VOB files to MOV files, but it says these are copywrite protected. These are personal home videos!
Is there an easy way to convert them to MOV files?

They're still accessible through finder, but now I can't drag-and-drop anything (at all) to the desktop. It was fine a minute ago before I shut down and rebooted my laptop. Restarts and switching users does nothing. I'm using Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4.

So over the last month or 2, I have been having this issue where my MBP (early 2008) will act as though the desktop doesnt exist. I can see it, everything functions normally, all programs operate fine, I can use spaces, expose, etc, but when I try to interact with my desktop, nothing works. I cant highlight folders, I can click on anything. Anyone know what might be causing this?

I've seen all the threads about changing icons in Apps and dock. I'm trying to do this with PNG files. I've tried to use COCOTHUMBX to convert them to icons but the results are unsatisfactory. Perhaps my images are too small. Are there any other ways to either convert, or use PNGs as Icons?

It seems no one has said Final Cut Pro is the optimum app for stills to animation and I have tried and can only agree, am unable to reduce the stills to 1 or 2 second flash to get 200 plus jpg's into short enough animations for holding interest of grandparents. Although this was secondary to what I purchased it for, bit disappointed after changing from 20 years of Windows..

It doesn't have to be exactly to MP4 I am just trying to convert my MKV files that I created when I placed my DVD's on my macbook. I didn't realize they would make the movies 11gb's when I can convert to mp4 or m4v or avi at like 2-4gb. I normally use Handbrake, RipIt or DVDRemaster but none are having any success converting the MKV file.

So I'm at the library and I got a really important file in my e-mail from my teacher with some really important information. The only problem is it's a .pages file and there are no macs around for miles. Can anyone convert this file for me? The library won't allow me to install any file converters on their computers so that won't be happening. If you are able to, send me your email address and I will forward the file, and you can just email it back to me.
