MacBook - Can The Charger Port Be Replaced

Apr 22, 2012

The last two weeks we have noticed that the charger port is very sensitive, I know our battery needs to be replaced, now we think the port where you plug in the charger needs to be replaced as well. You have to put a lot of pressure on the charger when its plugged in to hold a charge. if not that battery dies within seconds even if it says its at 100%. we have a early 2008 model for the macbook. any idea what we can do? we have elastics holding the charger in place and sometimes thats not even working. (using elastics to push the charger into the port )

MacBook Pro :: Green Ring Around The Charger Port Occasionally Turns Red?

Jul 27, 2009

I am currently in possession of a powerbook G4 15" which is having difficulties when charging. The battery i feel is fairly old as it does not retain charge well when not plugged in. The charger has recently become temperamental, charging at a very slow rate, if at all and usually works if held at a certain angle. The last few days i have noticed that the green ring around the charger port occasionally turns red and have unplugged the charger and left it.

MacBook Pro :: L-Shaped MagSafe Charger Split And Stuck Inside The Charging Port?

Feb 5, 2012

Someone tripped over the wire of the MagSafe charger, and it came away from the macbook, but split the L-Shaped part in half, and left the magnetic end stuck inside the charging port, and the other part exposing the gold pins.  Is there any way I can remove the magnetic part myself? Or should Apple be able to do it for me?

Hardware :: Apple Battery Charger Or 3rd Party Battery Charger Bettter For The System

Aug 11, 2010

The Apple one looks tempting as it comes with 6 batteries and 29€ isn't too much, plus, as usual, it looks brilliant. I looked at some 3rd party chargers as well ranging from 20€ to 40€. None of them was stunning or special by any means. Cheaper ones usually came with two or four batteries and some came without batteries. I don't really need it for else than Magic Mouse, occasionally for something else too.

MacBook Pro :: Mix USB 2.0 And 3.0 On Same Port Is Whole Port Slowed Down?

Jul 3, 2012

I have just ordered a new MacBook Pro and it does not have enough USB ports for my needs. If I have a USB 3.0 hub and I mix USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 peripherals on it, will the whole hub/computer USB 3.0 port be slowed down to USB 2.0 speeds?I am thinking back to Firewire, if you have Firewire 800 and 400 devices on the same chain, the whole chain slowed to Firewire 400 speeds.I don't think this is the same with USB but wanted some reassurance..

MacBook Pro :: HDD Replaced Now Freezing

May 1, 2012

I have a macbook pro 13 inch purchased in 2009.  My HDD died so I took it to an Apple dealer and they replaced it and upgraded me to 10.6.8, when I took it home I found that some of the applications I had received for free were now missing, and after a few days I was having the same problems with my HDD (folder with ? mark appearing)  so I took it back. They told me that I had a virus?  They then gave me the apps that had been missing and upgraded me again to 10.7.3 however it is still freezing regardless of whether I am on the internet so its not my connection. I also went to open itunes and it told me it could not find a folder and to choose a location.  When I chose Music - itunes - it states I can't and to choose another folder.

OS X :: MacBook Pro Won't Turn On - Replaced Battery

Dec 27, 2009

I just got my MacBook pro returned 4 days ago after the hard drive was replaced because the brightness was on minimum and had to be reboot 15 times so it could be changed. I asked apple to replace my battery because it had 1 minute battery life and it had 47 cycles but they didn't. My mac didn't have enough power to start speakers so I rebooted but my mac went into sleep mode and wouldn't come out. I had to force shut down. I tried turning it on but it wouldn't turn on, I tried taking out battery etc and pressed power button 5 secs but nothing changed.

I live 100 miles away from apple repair. I wrote this on my iPod touch. I took it to apple repair and it turned on. I had been using a 65 watt charging cable for a MacBook, I need a 85 watt charging cable. It was 100 miles away and has been posted to me today. apple told me that a MacBook pro requires 80 watt charging cable, and 65 watt can be bad for the mac and will only work if the battery isn't dead. my battery was dead when I tried to turn it on.

MacBook Pro :: Just Replaced The Thermal Paste In My MBP?

Jul 16, 2010

Well my MBP seems to have been running a tad bit warm. Took it apart and this is why. I've read all over the internet that Apple always seems to do a crappy job with applying way too much thermal paste to their processors/GPUs.

Pictures below confirms this and now my MBP is running 10-15*F cooler. Fans stays at a constant 1000RPMs. I haven't used SMC Fan Control yet to increase them as now I don't have to but maybe I will increase 500RPMs or so but I like how quiet it is now .

Cleaned them off with q-tips and 90% alcohol and applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.

Yuck what a crappy and sloppy job. I removed chunks of the old stuff.

All clean now. Look how shiny them chips are

MacBook Pro :: Three Beeps On Startup Even After RAM Replaced?

Feb 27, 2012

I'm working on a Macbook pro 15 A1278 for a friend. They were given the computer by someone who didn't want it.  My friend did not have the password to get into the machine and no original system disc. I thought this was going to be an easy case of erase-and-install. So I attempted to boot from my own Snow Leopard DVD, then I started getting three beep errors. Now I can't get as far as the password screen any more. Computer starts with normal chimes, then when it gets to the grey screen with the Apple, I get the "three beeps". Bought new ram, put it in, reseated it a bunch of times, still three beeps every time.Attempting to restart using the system DVD by holding the C key, same problem. DVD spins up but then three beeps. Fired the machine up as a target disk and ran disk utility via remote control from another machine, we''ll call that one "machine B". Hard drive checks out with no errors and is formatted in Extended Journaled. Did a clean system install from machine B (while still in target disk mode). System install was a success and was able to restart machine B successfully from the hard drive of the faulty machine.

After bringing them both into the genius bar and setting them side by side, the genius agreed that there were faint lines visible on light backgrounds, and is having it sent off to have the whole top housing replaced. Here's to hoping that it works out..UPDATE: so despite the fact that I have some authorization from the genius bar to have my clamshell assembly replaced, I just checked the status of my order and it says "no issues detected." I'm assuming that apple is within their right to do this, but the paperwork clearly states that the lines are visible in store to multiple geniuses.

MacBook :: Screen Chipped And Scratched - Wants To Replaced

Jul 20, 2009

I am selling my MacBook as I upgraded to a MBP. I was cleaning the screen to pretty it up and realized that the screen was chipped or scratched. I am not sure what to do. It is going to be anywhere from $99-$200 to fix it. Do you think it is worth it? Below are the general specs of the MB:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo
Model or Type: MacBook w/ APPLECARE!!
Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB41.00C1.B00
SMC Version: 1.31f0
Serial Number: W88114Y20P1

Now, I am seeing similar MBs go for $800-$850

I have attached two pictures. Please let me know if you feel it is worth the extra time and investment to get the screen fixed.

So, I ask, is it worth the extra money to get it fixed?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro :: MBP 17 LCD Replaced But Color Not As Rich Or Deep

Jul 24, 2009

I had the LCD replaced because the whole upper half was shifted on one side closer than the other for some reason and when I closed the lid, it was not only not aligned properly but it was chewing up the plastic edge at the bottom of the LCD.

Anyways, took it to the Apple store in Vancouver here and it still is a bit off. Took it to the tech and they say that is the way it is and there isn't too much they can do. That is total BS!! I have to get this realigned even if it means Apple will get their tech to replace my MBP. Just got it in March 09.

Anyhow, I noticed that the LCD replaced has colors NOT quite as rich or as deep as before. Anybody know how to check their LCD for this? I'm going to have to get them to replace the LCD again! I know Apple doesn't have any quality control when it comes to having the LCD replaced but when the computer is $3000, you would think they would take the care to be a little bit more stringent with their replacement parts/products.

MacBook Pro :: Replaced Hard Drive In It Still Not Working?

Feb 9, 2012

Last week the hard drive crashed (or so I assumed) on my late 2009 13" Mac-book Pro.I was getting the blinking folder icon at startup. After trying to boot in safe mode and several other start-up options, I booted from an OSX install disk and found that the drive wasn't appearing in the Disk Utility - this, and the fact that I had been running it at very high capacity for far too long is what led me to assume it was utterly dead.So I ordered a new drive, a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB, and installed it today. Again booting from the OSX install disk, I went to the disk utility (thinking I would format the drive before installing the OS), but new drive wasn't there either.Assuming I installed the new drive correctly (it was pretty straightforward), this is leading me to assume that I was wrong with my diagnosis.
