I recently bought a MBA but after some months the HD gave up. So I bought a generic Samsung HS082HB 1,8" zif HD to replace the broken HD. I thought I bought the right one but my MBA wasn't able to recognize the new HD. This new HD is a generic Samsung while the original was the one with the apple () printed on the label. So I ask you: do I need the certified one or did I miss something in replacing the HD?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new MacBook Pro. I had a 2010 MBP and kept the hard drive (Hitachi 500gb 7200 rpm) from that computer. It ws running 10.7 and worked fine. It still boots up perfectly on my MacPro so I know it works.
I tried to boot the new MacBook Pro using the old drive but I get a circle with a line through it. I have tried to boot using Firewire and even installed it into the new MacBook Pro. I then tried to re-install OS 10.7. I just downloaded it from the App Store for my MacPro so I tried to use it to re-install. It will not work on this new Macbook Pro. I had to download a version specific to this computer (using the "recover" disk). I takes 1.5 hours to download and then it still didn't work. When the computer reboots after the download and restarts I get the same **** circle with a line through it. The new "manual" is a joke. There is no reference to upgrading drives or memory. Did Apple decide to make their new laptops inaccessible to the owner? I can't find any info online and at the Apple store today they told me they knew of no reason that the drive wouldn't work.

So my hard drive just broke. Like a fool I accidently dropped it this morning and this means it cant be booted. I've tried everything I could find on reviving the thing but nothing has worked. However, after leaving it on the grey Apple booting screen for a good hour or so it finally managed to get to the desktop but was still going slowly. My macbook is able to boot of my external hard drive and I've checked the RAM and it's fine, which leaves me to believe that it's a problem with the hard drive itself.
Now the issue is that my external hard drive is only 160GB and my internal (now broken) one is 500GB with around 300GB of stuff on it (yes I do need it) and I don't want to have to lose it all. So is there any way of getting my currently broken hard drive and putting its data onto a new one? My idea is to take it out, install the new one and use the broken was as an external and do it like that.
After 4 years of brave use, the internal HD on my Macbook Pro has died. I'm now looking for a new one to install it myself. It's a first generation Macbook Pro (1.83Ghz - A1150). Also, regarding the installation of the drive itsef: I've seen some guides on how to install it and they seem a little hard to accomplish. My experience with this kind of procedure so far is related to installing ram, which seems to be really easier. Is this something that a non-experienced user can install or shall I think twice before doing such adventures myself?

I recently purchased a Patriot 16GB RAM upgrade (yes, spare me the Apple "Limited to 8GB" speech), and a new Seagate Hybrid drive because I'm out of space on my old one. I installed the 16GB RAM in my MBPro 15" (Early 2011...running 10.7.3) with no issue last night, and it was running fine and quite zippy. After Time-Machining, I replaced the hard drive today, and tried to boot from a backup Lion disc (to format the new HDD and restore from Time-Machine) to no avail. Then, when I switched to a Snow Leopard disc, I started to receive 3 Beeps...the infamous RAM beeps. I figured that the RAM that I was sent was bad, so I switched to my previous OWC 8GB set to the same result. The issue I'm having is that I took the Snow Leopard disc out, replaced the new hard drive with my old one, and viola everything is working perfectly. I'm even posting this on the same computer.

Everything worked fine for about two weeks until the contact area between my power cord and the computer started to smoke. I've no longer been able to turn on my computer. I've had strange issues with my non-warrantied MacBook--including having to replace the battery four times over my three years of owning it and twice having to replace my power adapter (as it literally caught fire twice).
I've since given up on the MacBook Pro and purchased a new cheap laptop. However, I've got lots of important files on that brand new hard drive I put into my laptop. As I'm assuming the hard drive itself is still functional, I want to know how I could remove it and obtain my data. Do any of you know what sort of chassis I could purchase in order to essentially use my MacBook Pro's hard drive as an external drive to obtain these files?
My macbook suddenly crashed and I had to do a forced shutdown. When I tried to turn it back in, a folder with a question mark kept flashing and by computer did not start. I looked up what might have been the cause of this, and I found out it was my hard drive or the cable that connects the drive to the mac. But I brought it to my school since they have tech support and they said that my hard drive is pretty much dead, but it can still be possible to retrieve the data from. I have a 2011 macbook that has a motherboard that is broken, and that macbook has a terabyte Hard drive that was put in about a year ago after a broken hard drive was removed. Now I have bought a brand new macbook same model and I was advised by the apple store to take the old TB hard drive and swap it with the one in the new computer. I just want to know if by doing this I'm going to loose all of my files and programs by just swapping them. I have no back up anywhere just the files on the hard drive in the broken computer. So am I going to loose all of the files on the hard drive when I swap it? or will I have to get it backed up some how? They are both running Mavericks

They initially suggested that I get to keep the hardrive from the machine, but now they are insinuating that I have to send in the entire machine. I have lots of data on the drive including unprotected bank details and other sensitive information.
I somehow need to wipe this clean by monday when I need to send it off. Problem is I have no idea how to do this, the machine won't boot, all I have is a imac, I don't even have a fire wire cable that is compatible between the two machines so I can't start it in target disk mode. I refuse to send it to them with my data on it so my last resort will be to destroy the drive itself (although how I do this without causing structural damage is beyond me).
my MacBook harddrive stopped working last week. I took it to a Mac Certified guy, but he was unable to recover any of the applications or files on the drive. This is the second drive in two years. The first one I was able to find a guy who recovered everything and put it onto disks. I tried those on the new harddrive, and the iPhoto application and files are not opening. I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica. Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house. I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip.There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes.When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts? Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply? Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician? My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service? How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder.I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook. My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed.I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that.Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?

Our old Toshiba External Hard drive has failed ( approximately 3 years old ). It powers on and the blue light comes on, but the fans don't spin and you can't see it in the finder or on my computer ( we tried on both PC and Mac ).

my brand new dual-band Airport Extreme has been working great for the last 2 weeks since I bought it. Today I connected an external hard drive (WD Passport 500Gb) via a USB hub, and it was working great for a few Gb of file transfers.
About an hour later, I transferred another file, and the Airport ceased to work halfway through; I went to check and the Airport was completely dead. No lights, hard reset does nothing.
My iBook has had a broken hard drive for a while now. I have tried loading a Linux live cd on it, but it's mostly useless because of having no storage. I want to be able to use it on the go. Is it possible that i could use a linux live usb, such as damn small linux, and use the memory on said flash drive instead of a hard drive? How would I go about doing this if I could. Keep in mind that it wont bother me that I won't have much storage space. I really only want to use it for web browsing on the go.
