May 31, 2012I have some complex questions regarding an iMac, a Time-Machine backup, and iTunes on an iPod. I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica. Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house. I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip.There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes.When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts? Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply? Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician? My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service? How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder.I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook. My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed.I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that.Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?

MacBook Pro :: 13" (Late 2009) Won't Recognize New Hard Disk?
Apr 9, 2012I recently tried to upgrade my original 160GB HDD to a 500GB Scorpio Blue. I formatted the drive to HFS+ and installed Lion on it while it was in an USB enclosure.When i restart the computer, HDD boots off of the enclosure and it is fully functional and I can view it and my original drive.However, whenever I take my new HDD out of the enclosure and install it into my mbp all it gives me is the flashing ? error and it is not visible in boot utility either. I've tried everything I can think of to get this to work. I don't believe it is the HDD seeing as it can boot off the enclosure. What exactly are my options to fixing this issue?

May 21, 2012My CPU fan seems to be running fast a lot on my late 2009 IMac. When I wake my system up in the morning the CPU fan is running at 939rpm. After 20 minutes of surfing I can hear it and it is at 2456rpm. All of the internal temps are around the same.Â

Mar 19, 2010So my macbook is just a few days old, but i think i found something weird with the dvd drive. Its my first mac, so i dont know about this. But is it common that i have to push the whole dvd/cd inside the drive before it know its a dvd/cd there, its just a tiny bit of cd/dvd to spot before it takes it and sucks it inside. I thought, when over the half of the cd/dvd in, it sucks the cd/dvd inside automaticly. Seems weird i have to push it all inside before something happens. Is this normal? Also it makes alot of noise at the start, when it sucks it in

May 15, 2012I am trying to connect my windows 7 laptop to my iMac 27 (late 2009). The laptop is an hp elitebook 8440p with integrated intel graphics and it has a display-port. I bought a displayport to minidisplay port cable and connected to my iMac 27; nothing is happening. My laptop says no displays detected and the iMac does nothing when i press command-F2...i've also tried command-F2-Fn. It doesnt even seem to respond to command-F2. Also under the keyboard shortcuts menu there are only two shortcuts for displays and its to dim and brigthen the display. The iMac and PC are both up to date with software; OSx 10.7.4 Lion.

Intel Mac :: Should Replace A Logic Board In My 2009 24" ?
May 27, 2012My fan(s) started running at high speed and display was erratic. I diagnosed a thermal issue with the logic board, tried some home troubleshooting, then took it in to the genius bar. Fans checked out fine but logic board (and maybe video card) did not. Repair will be north of $600. Problem is, I love the 24" iMac and don't want the 27" and wouldn't want to go back to the 21". Would it be dumb to fix a 3 year old iMac.

Sep 29, 2010Just got done loading 8gb of ram and my OCZ vertex 2 ssd 40gb. Load Time of apps is amazing. My one question is boot time went from 48 seconds to 33. Should I be getting better. I used carbon copy to clone drve and I'm only using 14 gb of the 40 that's there. I domhave to say these setup screams at certain jobs.

Mar 11, 2012I stopped by a friends house to try and help them with an early 2009 20" iMac that started stalling on startup (sometimes before their login screen, and sometimes after). The computer didn't exhibit this behaviour at all, then overnight, it behaved as stated and never once allowed them to get far enough to launch an application or open the Finder.Â
When I arrived, rebooted and held down Command + Option + P + R, but it had no effect on the problem.  I then booted off the original OSX discs and ran Disk Utility. At first it seemed slow to complete, but before long (a few minutes) the Verify Disk finished without any errors. Next, I attempted "Repair Disk Permissions" and noticed that this was taking a very long time, +10 minutes. That said, it did complete without any problems, albiet slowly.Â
Unfortunately, this did not allow me to login, and I never made it to the login screen. Being a close friend, I offered to take the computer home and try to copy as much data as I could through Target Disk Mode over Firewire.Â
My first attempt to copy her Home directory got 25% of the way through the roughly 4 GB of data, then stopped. I rebooted and tried again, with even less success than before (I could barely access Folders let alone copy after the reboot). I attempted to recreate the "successful" attempt by unplugging the computer and letting it sit for a few hours. Sure enough, I was able to copy data from the Target Disk Mode mounted drive, but after about 1 GB of copying the access to the hard slowed to a crawl (a few kilobytes per minute) then halted completely.Â
I've repeated the above process to slowly but surely copy the entire 4 GB of home directory data, and am about to call it quits after salvaging what was important to her.Â
Question: Is this the sign of a failing hard drive close to the end of its life, or is this something potentially more serious with the logic board? I've only come across a stubborn drive like this with an external drive that was close to failure, and assume this is the case.Â

Apr 1, 2012My iMac stopped booting. The fans and hard-drive spin up but the screen stays black and I can hear that the hard drive isn't been read after the initial spin up.Â
I decided to open it up to take a look at the diagnostic LEDs to see if it might help me diagnose the problem (the most obvious failure is the logic board). I can't find the LEDs anywhere, where are they? Does my iMac even have diagnostic LEDs?Â
The other possibility is that I can't find the lights because they aren't lighting up. The fans, the hard drive and the CD drive all spin up fine so at least I know that there is some power running though it.

Jun 18, 2012I just bought a new MacBook Pro. I had a 2010 MBP and kept the hard drive (Hitachi 500gb 7200 rpm) from that computer. It ws running 10.7 and worked fine. It still boots up perfectly on my MacPro so I know it works.
I tried to boot the new MacBook Pro using the old drive but I get a circle with a line through it. I have tried to boot using Firewire and even installed it into the new MacBook Pro. I then tried to re-install OS 10.7. I just downloaded it from the App Store for my MacPro so I tried to use it to re-install. It will not work on this new Macbook Pro. I had to download a version specific to this computer (using the "recover" disk). I takes 1.5 hours to download and then it still didn't work. When the computer reboots after the download and restarts I get the same **** circle with a line through it. The new "manual" is a joke. There is no reference to upgrading drives or memory. Did Apple decide to make their new laptops inaccessible to the owner? I can't find any info online and at the Apple store today they told me they knew of no reason that the drive wouldn't work.
