OS X Mavericks :: Create Oversize Window?

Jun 23, 2014

I need to take a screen shot from an entire window. When properly rendered this window is 5 times larger than the resolution on my MacBook or the external monitor I'm using.

To use the application, it's ok to scroll around the screen, but I want to capture an image that will show the whole window.

So, how can I either:

* Size a single window so that it is much larger than the screen (Dragging horizontally works but dragging vertically doesn't) - Or

* Se the screen resolution of an external monitor to something like 9600x5400 so that I will only see part of the window (The normal max resolution of the display is 1920x1080)

OS X Mavericks :: Terminal Utility Window Go To Sleep

Sep 2, 2014

One issue though is that occasionally, a terminal utility window will go to sleep (or become Zombified) and won't wake up again.

This happens when I am running a long numerical calculation from one of the tabs in the terminal window.

Normally, the numerical calculation does not print much, but will occasionally print out information about the progress of the program and sometimes error messages.  In past MAC-OSX, I had just started the numerical calculation in one tab and went on working (vim editing e.g.) in another tab in the same window, occasionally going back to check for error messages and progress.

In Mavericks OSX though at some point, the long run-time of the numerical calculation causes the whole terminal window to sleep including the tab in which I am doing the editing.

It is an interesting sleep.  The numeric calculation keeps running, so I just set the window aside to let the program finish.

Other terminal utility windows are fine but all tabs on the same window are in the sleep mode.

The sleeping windows can actually be updated to their most recent, directly visible content by hitting the yellow dot at the top left,

sending the window down to the Dock, and then reopening from the Dock.

Even after reopening the terminal window from dock, the whole window (every tab) remains asleep. Scrolling does not work, continued updating of the screen output by the numerical calculation does not work, but you can see the most recent content by using the Dock update trick.

I can work around this and change the numerical calculation to send the output and error messages to a file instead of the screen and then run the programs in background.  (Don't know if background programs will still zombify the terminal window.)

Also, I can do the editing from a separate terminal window, but at first the unexpected irreversible sleep caught me off-guard.

I realise that such automatic sleeping might be part of the reason for the large increase in speed, which is actually more important to me than maintaining the viability of each terminal window.

I am wondering though if there is some way to reanimate the sleeping terminal windows to inspect error messages more easily (i.e. scroll up to old ones).

OS X Mavericks :: Restoring A Minimized Window From Dock

Jun 2, 2014

I've been searching for a keystroke to restore an application or a window of an application that I've minimized (Command-M) to the Dock. My search has not been successful.

With some applications Command-1 will work, but not often.

I'm wondering if there is a standard key combination to do this. If not, I know I can create a user keyboard shortcut, but I don't know how to create the black diamond character or if that would even work.

OS X Mavericks :: Mac Mail Viewer Window Disappearing

Aug 20, 2014

Every few days when I try to open Mail app message viewer window from the minimized state, by clicking on the App icon in the Dock, it will not open -- even though Mail app is running. When this starts happening there is no way to make the message viewer appear, even though Mail app has not crashed does appear to be running. Also, at this time, any minimized emails will not open from the Dock either. If I restart Mail app this fixes it, but the problem comes back.

minimized email messages often seem to get lost by the Dock after this happens as well, so I lose track of messages I had minimized for future reference (they no longer appear in the Dock and I have to find them and open them and minimize them again... since I sometimes minimize several messages in the Dock to respond to or have for easy reference this is annoying).

OS X Mavericks :: Mail Viewer Window Keeps Disappearing?

Jun 17, 2014

The Mail viewer window opens briefly on Mail startup but disappears immediately.

It will open from a minimised window (while the program is open) or by opening a new viewer window only.

This has started happening since Mavericks was installed - before this, the viewer window always appeared automatically when I clicked on Mail or command-tabbed to Mail.

OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.4 / Window Positions Not Stored When Changing From One To Another User

Aug 22, 2014

I'm using OS X 10.9.4 on an iMac (late 2010).

I have a problem with window positions not being where they should be when changing from one logged in user to another logged in user. I have two user accounts and the problem occurs only for one user. I will describe the problem using the below combination of text and images.

I have tried all sorts of things including, repair permissions, boot into the restore mode to do an ACL repair, but I have also tried to delete and recreate the account that has the resolution problem without any success.

Step 1: I'm logged in as user number one, all good.

Step 2: Now it is time to change to user number two.

Step 3: The user change is done with no problems at all. When I, from user number two, changes back to user number one again this happens.

The normal spin: Wierd half screen grey and all windows are gathered ontop of each other instead of being left were they was previous to the user change. The screen does not get half grey when I do the user change in the other direction.

The whole screen is back but all windows are still gathered ontop of each other instead of being left were they was previous to the user change.

OS X Mavericks :: Control Mail App Window Location / Animation?

Sep 4, 2014

Mail.app (Version 7.3 (1878.6) under 10.9.4) is driving me nuts with its superfluous animation. I run dual displays. I keep my main Mail window on my secondary display. When I click Reply (or Reply-All), the email I am replying to flies out and does its cute little flyover to the main display.

Is there a way to control this lame behavior? I thought Apple was against animations for the sake of animation. It's completely useless and a UI hindrance. Jakob Nielsen laughs at this, by the way. (Suggesting that I use my main display is not a fix. The software should adapt to my behavior, not vice-versa.)

OS X Mavericks :: Apple Mail Window Will Not Open / Show On Desktop

Jun 29, 2014

I open mail and it launches since it is showing in the dock and the mail menu is visible. The main mailbox window is missing and most all of the menus are greyed out, even in the window menu where it allows you to select a window to see the main mail window is not showing up.

I have manually rebuilt the mailbox database and that did not work. I deleted the "Account.plist" file from the ~/library/mail/MailData/ folder and this seem to work. When I launched mail after I deleted this file the Main mail window was there with all my mailbox folders and emails. The only thing missing was the inbox for my main email account. Mail required that a new email account be created otherwise it would quit, I create the email account and everything was fine, until I quit out of mail. The next time I launched it again i was back to not have the main mail window. The only way to get it to come back is to delete the "Account.plist" file again and created the main email account. The only work around I have at this point is not to quit mail.

OS X Mavericks :: Apple Mail Activity Not Showing In Viewer Window

Dec 11, 2014

The left column of Apple Mail viewer window has a function at the bottom allows you to see pop up the  "Mail Activity" but very little activity shows in there.  Nothing like the separate Activity function which you can open from under the drop down "Window".

Is the Mail Activity in the viewer window not working properly or is it supposed to show only very limited Mail Activity?

Would be convenient to not have to use the separate window for viewing Activity.

OS X Mavericks :: Applications Window View Options Reset On Reboot

Sep 11, 2014

I edit the view options for the Applications window. I make the icons bigger, and I put a photo in the background.  The window looks fine until I do a reboot (I don't know about logging out - I only have one user).  Then when I open the Applications window I find it has reset to smaller icons on a white background.  Doesn't matter what I do when I edit the options.  It always looks the same after I restart.  I can't say for certain, but I think this problem has been going on since before Mavericks.  I thought the cause might be a 3rd party app but I just bought a brand new iMac and the same thing happens.

OS X Mavericks :: Finder Window Automatically Jump To The Top When Move A File Out Of It

Jul 1, 2014

When I have a folder open, say downloads, in a list view, and I delete a file, the scroll bar will automatically jump to the top of the list. It's absolutely non-sensical. One of the most annoying things ever when your trying to organize a long list of files. Happens in 10.8.5 and in Mavericks on two separate computers. It's worse in 10.8.5 as sometimes it will glitch out and do it even when I am scrolling down the list. . Kind of thing that makes you want to switch to windows.

How do I turn this off?
