View 2 RepliesOS 10.9.3. This morning the Finder keyboard shortcut Command-W stopped closing windows and instead opened a folder burried fairly deeply in my Home folder. I moved that folder and managed to get Command-W to stop opening it, but it will still NOT close a window in Finder. Nor will it close windows in applications. What does happne is that the frame of the window flashes (but it remains open).

I would like to create keyboard shortcuts in Finder to tag folders and files using the built-in colors.
I have successfully created a shortcut that reads "Tags..." which brings up the file dialog that allows me to select a color. I want to take the shortcut to the next level and have a single keystroke Tag a file with a particular color.
I have tried the following, without success:
Tags...Add Tag "Green"
Tags... Add Tag "Green"
Tags...Green
Tags... Green
Tags... "Green"
Tags..."Green"

look at this picture below. There is a weird bar that is appearing. I don't know how that bar came there. How can I get rid of that bar?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Snow Leopard: I open a Finder window in column view that has a long list of content, scroll down to the bottom of the column and delete a file/folder. The file/folder disappears but the rest of the window content is unchanged. IE: if my view showed me R S T U V and I delete T, my view would be R S U V. In Lion, I do exactly the same thing and the Finder jumps to the top of the column. IE: When I delete T, my window jumps to A B C D E instead of staying focused on R S U V.I've got a new Mac Mini with the 2.7 Ghz i7 upgrade... but otherwise stock. Currently running 10.7.4.

When I have a folder open, say downloads, in a list view, and I delete a file, the scroll bar will automatically jump to the top of the list. It's absolutely non-sensical. One of the most annoying things ever when your trying to organize a long list of files. Happens in 10.8.5 and in Mavericks on two separate computers. It's worse in 10.8.5 as sometimes it will glitch out and do it even when I am scrolling down the list. . Kind of thing that makes you want to switch to windows.
How do I turn this off?
I have an external HD full of music and whenever I want to play one, I just search for it in finder and drag&drop it to iTunes. However, I'm having issues with it on my new MacBook Air. Whenever I search the drive for files, they appear normally, but I can't drag them! Highlighing works OK, so does double-clicking or cmd+O, but I can't move them to a playlist. It's the same with any files, not just .mp3s - they cannot be dragged out of the finder window. Scrolling is also wonky, but moving between files using arrows works fine.
note that this works perfectly fine when searching the computer's HD.
Is this a glitch of some sort, or is the computer preventing me from doing it for some reason? I'm running 10.9.3 with all the updates; the HD is a 1TB Transcend, ExFAT formatted.

I have a Mac Pro tower with Snow Leopard, and there is a long delay, sometimes 5-6 seconds long, before files open up after being clicked on within the Finder window. The delay happens with any file, such as a MS Word file, .jpg file, .pdf file, whatever. The result is always the same - a long delay before the file opens. It doesn't seem to matter if the file is large in size or not. Before the Mac Pro I had a G5 and it opened files much faster than this brand new Mac Pro.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe default 'document' column is way too wide and forces you eye to track all the way across the screen to read info like "date modified', 'kind' or 'size'. Tried several times to create a narrower default 'document name' column with no results. Couldn't find anything in preferences or view options. Tried dragging column headers while holding the down the option key with no results. Every time I open a new finder window, all columns except the 'document' column affixed to the right side of the window. Also, when you grab the bottom right corner of a window to resize smaller, the lists become re-affixed to the right side of the window when opening the window back up. Experiencing the same problem in Mavericks 10.9.3 on an iMac and Macbook Pro Retina.

I recently erased my Mac partition of my hard drive and got a fresh copy on mavericks. I did this believing I would then be able to restore any important backed-up files later, now all I get in time machine is this:
Everything is greyed out apart from all my files and it stays like this for about five minutes. I know all the data is on the hard drive as it says 250GB of data is on it. Is it just searching through the Hard drive and I need to give it time for the files to show up?
I couldn't fine the Logic Pro X file titles "I still get letters", so i went to Time Machine. I wasn't able to find it until i searched for it. The only problem is it shows the file, but no path and if i restore it, nothing happens. Am i doing this wrong or is my file lost forever? Ill attach a screen shot. (A lot of the files on my time machine just show up white like that)

One thing that has always bugged me about Mac OS is that when a network share becomes unresponsive or unavailable the shortcut on the desktop disappears and you get a glaring messaging that the share has been disconnected. Is there any way to prevent a network share from being removed just because it becomes momentarily unavailable? As an example, on a Windows machine the network share shortcut remains, you simply cannot use it but it is there and ready to go the moment the share comes back online. Is there some way to make OS X behave in this manner? Or is there a way to extend the time out interval for a network share?
View 1 Replies View RelatedFor the past several months (and only since downloading Mavericks) Finder crashes about 50% of the time I try to name a file on the Desktop. I click the file, hit 'enter', and either right away or while trying to type the first letter, the rainbow spinning wheel comes up and I have to Relaunch Finder.
My computer specifications:MacBook Pro, 13-inch, Late 2011Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MBSoftware: OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)Memory: 4 GBStorage: 415.18 GB free out of 499.25 GB; 500 GB SATA Disk
Relaunching Finder will usually cancel any changes made to the document name before it crashed, and will allow me to then name the file, but usually the next file I try to rename crashes and the process repeats.
I'm using a 15" Macbook/retina, OS X 10.9.4, ITunes 11.3.1 (2). ITunes shows the album art. But if I go to the files themselves, finder shows some with art some without. Why? I currently have one file that shows no art in icon or list view. In column and cover flow, it shows art in the info pane but not the highlighted file. I can move the file out of ITunes and the art shows up everywhere but icon view. Other files, show the art in all the right places.

I'm using Finder to search for files on a server connected to my computer at work. The search results I am getting do not include all the files that meet my search criteria. For example, I am looking through photo files for any files with "34" in the name. Some files show up, but not all of them. See screenshot. I am searching in the "Branded Photoshoot" folder, and I am getting some results (Branded Photoshoot/Hilton Universal/IMG_1434), but another file that is in folder, though a different subfolder, (Branded Photoshoot/Architectural Center/IMG_1534) is NOT showing up. What is causing that subfolder and its files to not be included in the search results?

I know on windows, I used to just press ESC and it would close the window I was in like if I had a chat message up, I could press escape and it would close it
Now I press the command + ESC and it quits the program... is there a shortcut to just close the window instead of quitting it altogether?
Hi, I just got a new Macbook for xmas. Turned it on today for first time and downloaded Google Earth. I somehow dragged it into the Macintosh Hard Drive. Now when I click on the Macintosh HD icon, and the window opens up, I see the Google Earth icon to the left of the search box. When the arrow hovers over it, it shows the path to where the app is saved. If I click it, it opens the application. Its also in the Applications subfolder. I want to keep the program but how do I get it off the top of the HD window?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had to downgrade from the second Yosemite beta in order to run one of my applications for work that didn't run on Yosemite. I've successful reinstalled Mavericks to the chagrin of finder not working at all. Whenever I mount a DMG I get "Finder cannot open files in the “volume” format." Also, whenever I click to open a folder or a new window in finder, it just crashes and relaunches. I'm going to try to do a fresh install of Mavericks and recover from a backup.
I also had to regain admin privileges for my user which I have done successfully.
Having trouble with my backup drive. It's a 1TB WD My Passport Ultra.
The drive mounts in Finder, but is extremely slow. In Disk Utility, the drive shows the correct disk space usage and number of files; but in Finder it only shows the folders/files at the root level of the drive, and each has a size of zero bytes with no items:
What is happening? How can I access the data (it's obviously still there if DU shows the files) and (possibly) fix this?

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut to go to the Login Window (fast user switching) like the Win+L combination for Windows XP?
Or perhaps a keyboard shortcut to lock the machine, like CTRL+ALT+DEL for Windows 2000/XP?
I've been searching for what seems like hours, and I can't find anything.
