Mac Pro :: 2 TB WD Caviar Green Is Good For Ideal TM Backup Drive?

Nov 6, 2010

I'm in the market for an internal HDD to use as a dedicated TM backup drive. The 2 TB WD Caviar Green is going for about $90 on Amazon right now. Seems like it might be a perfect TM backup drive? It's not that fast, but does that really matter for a TM backup? It's also quiet and doesn't use a lot of power.

Mac Pro :: HD To Accompany SSD - Difference Between Caviar Black Or Green

Jul 20, 2010

HD to accompany my SSD startup/OS disk in my HackPro and I'm wondering if my media disk makes that much of a difference. The Caviar Greens run cheaper $/GB than the Blue or Black from what I've seen. Would there be much of a difference using a Green as a scratch disk?

Mac Pro :: Difference Between WD Caviar Blue 500GB & WD Caviar Black 640GB?

Jul 27, 2010

I ordered some hard drives for an upcoming low-budget short film the other day. Due to budget constraints I couldn't exactly buy the "ideal" drives, but these will work fine nonetheless. I ended up with the following:(2) WD Caviar Blue 500GB (WD5000AAKS) 7,200-rpm (for camera data capture; 1 primary and 1 backup)(1) WD Caviar Black 640GB (WD6401AALS) 7,200-rpm (for editing and post)After unpacking the drives, I proceeded to run the AJA System Test on each drive to test the read/write speeds and noticed some interesting things. Being a nerd, I was simply curious. And just to preface, all three drives were blank and freshly formatted (Mac OS Extended), with no data previously written to them. Here's what I noticed

PowerPC :: Good Backup Program To Backup Home Folders?

Aug 22, 2010

I just sold my iMac (described in sig) and need to backup my stuff to an external drive. What (free) program would allow me to backup my user name without having to manually drag everything over? Migration Assistant won't work as there will be a few days where I have no computer. Also I don't want to back up the OS itself; just my home folders (Pictures Music Movies etc.) and some applications.

Applications :: Good App To Backup A Website?

My host went belly up over xmas - and lost allot of data... hence the search... can't count on anyone these days

PS: Carbon and SuperDuper are cloners - not backup apps (subtle differences).... and I need something more NAS traditional - to get "changed" files and such....

Mac Pro :: Ideal Mac Pro Specs For Home DVD Burnning?

Nov 23, 2008

I intend to burn close to 30 hours of home HD videos on hopefully HD disks like Blu-ray. I tried the Toast 9 and successfully burned a 15 minute HD on a regular DVD however on my MacBook 2.16 GHz with 2 GB RAM it took few hours for encoding.

Question #1: can any hardware piece ie: elgato's Turbo.264 will make a siginificant difference in encoding time

OR...

question#2: I need to shell out money for a powerful Mac Pro with an internal 3rd party BR burner (about $500), and if so, then what are ideal specs, dual core, quad core...RAM size, video card speed...etc.

MacBook Pro :: What Is Ideal Temperature And Fan RPM Speed?

Sep 30, 2009

Just recently bought a MBP and noticed how hot it will be when I am running WoW. (I saw it reach 100 degrees on istat.) after searching through the forums, I just downloaded smcFancontrol. Problem is, I have no idea what is an ideal temperature/fan speed. Basically, I have 3 questions:

1) Is there a max temperature the MBP should run at?
2) If I use smcFancontrol, should I use it at max setting (6200rpm) to keep my temperature down to the ideal temperature?
3) If I use a leather casing (Macally) for my MBP, would it seriously impair the MBP in terms of cooling?

Mac Pro :: Ideal Professional Photographer For A System?

Aug 6, 2010

I shoot about 40 weddings per year. (2500-3000 images per week). I am currently working off a 2 x2.66 Dual Core MacPro with 11GB of memory. I use Aperture and a bit of Final Cut Pro.I need the MacPro for storage issues related to iTunes and photo libraries so I have ruled out an iMac. My question is, when will I cross the "overkill" line. I don't spend my days doing intensive 3D render outputs of math computations so I know a 12 core is "too much".

Mac Pro :: Using Final Cut / After Effects Ideal Config?

Aug 14, 2010

I'm a FCP / AE / Compressor user and have been in the market to upgrade my painfully slow G5 for years now. I'm pulling the trigger on a 2010 and trying to decide the best set up. I'm going with a 12-core but thinking the 2.66. Not sure if the extra $1200 can be justified to go to the 2.99. Anyone have an opinion?

I thought with that $1200 I could get more RAM instead. So, my second question is what the best move would be for RAM. I'm going with the base offering from apple and will remove and replace with either 2 or 3 8GB sticks or more 4GB sticks.

MacBook Pro :: Ideal Resolution For Office Work

Does the 15" MBP have the ideal resolution for day to day office work (email, docs etc..) and to play the occasional game or is it even too low for this? OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Backup Drive Ejects After TM Backup?

May 7, 2012

I have an external 1TB WD My Passport drive which I use for TM backup's.  When I plug in via USB, DriveUnlock appears.  I unlock the drive, then instigate a TM backup.  All goes fine, then from what I can gather, when the TM backup has finished, the drive ejects itself.  There is no error messages, unmount drive issues, it just dissappears from finder.  I can only assume the backup has been successful, as no error messages appear, meaning the drive wasn't ejected while backup was in progress.  I have changed the USB cable, as well as tried different ports, but the same always happens.  In System Preferencies/Energy Saver, I have made sure the Put HD to sleep is un ticked.  Still it happens.  Has anyone else had this problem, and is it fixable?  I would love to keep the drive attached and backing up for  the period I am working, usually 12 hours a day, rather than the once a day at the moment.

Mac Pro :: Replacing 320gb Baracuda 7200.11 Drives - Caviar Black / 7200.12?

Sep 20, 2010

I want to replace my 3 year old drives before it's too late.

I have about 200 gigs of data, split between a pair of Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm drives I bought 3 years ago.

I am thinking on going with a single 500 gig drive for my data, and I can't decide between a Caviar Black, or a Baracuda 7200.12.

I have read that the Caviar Black have incredible performance, , but only for the 1TB since it has 3 platters.

How do the 500gig models compare between WD and Seagate? I just don't have the need for more. My OS and Apps are on the SSD at 23 gigs, and all the rest of my work/personal files take up about 200 gigs.

Which is going to be better, the Black, or the Baracuda? 500 gig models only.
