Mac Pro :: Have RAID 0 And Want To Clone It To Single Drive But Shows Potential Options?

Sep 8, 2009

I have two 1.5TB HDs, RAID 0, as my itunes library. I use Time Machine to back up all my drive, but I also wanted to clone the RAID but only use a single drive as the clone. Will this cause any potential problems since its going from a 2 drive RAID to a single drive.

Windows On Mac :: Clone Bootcamp Drive But No Longer Shows Up?

Jan 3, 2010

I've done a byte to byte clone of my original 320GB bootcamp drive to a 750GB drive (connected via USB). So I remove the 320GB from bay 4 (MacPro) and slot in the 750GB into bay 4. I fire up my MacPro hit the Option key during power up and all I get is an option to select my Mac drive not my new 750GB Windows drive.

So I boot into OSX (since I have no other option) and I can see my "Untitled" Windows drive on my desktop. I can select it and browse it and I see all my Windows files. Also, under System Preferences - Startup Disk, I can see my "Windows on Untitled" listed.

Mac Pro :: Boot Drive - Single Or 2-Drive RAID?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm still working out the details on purchasing a new MacPro. My Apple sales rep tells me that I can greatly increase the launch speed of applications and the system OS by purchasing 2 hard drives and using Disk Utility to stripe them together into a "software RAID". They claim it will be faster and more reliable than a single SSD. I know I've asked this question before, but the answers were over my head. I don't know anything about SATA raid cards, or SSD's except for their benefits. But I'm pretty sure I can stripe two drives together and make a software RAID.

Mac Pro :: HDD Options - Single Drive Or Raid0?

Sep 8, 2009

I'm having a hard time deciding what to do with my two open HDD bays in my Mac Pro.I know I want to add more storage, but I'm not sure if I should use Raid0 or not.I store most of my media on a server but wanted to store the following in my MacPro and would need more hdd space.Bootcamp - obviously can't store in serverScratch drive - would write handbrake encodes to this then transfer to serverIn all I'll need around 1.5tbI already have a 1.5tb drive and would only consider buying another to put them into raid0. Should I bother with raid0 for the increased speed or just use the 7200RPM 1.5tb drive I already have?

Mac Pro :: 128gb SSD Boot Drive 3tb RAID Performance Options?

Jul 19, 2009

I purchased a 128gb Patriot Torqx to run as the boot drive for my Mac Pro. I know that the new Intels are coming but I am happy with the Patriots and wanted some instant gratification. The machine is definetly snappier but doesn't quite have the pep as my MBP running a 256gb SSD as the sole HDD.
I have (3) 1 TB 5400 rpm drives in a striped RAID array. It seems sometimes when I start an application that lives on the SSD boot drive, the other drives begin to run as well (I can hear them spinning). Any thoughts on what could be done to speed up my system and also make sure that the SSD runs as independent from the traditional Hdd's as possible?I am running a early 2008 Intel 2.8ghz machine, 8 cores, 6gb RAM.

Difficulty deciding between 1 or 2. Unsure about real world performance gain of 2. No experience with SSDs or RAID 0. Worried about alignment and sleep/hibernate issues. Stock 5400rpm 320GB will go inside eSATA enclosure. Does anybody have a good eSATA ExpressCard/34 to recommend? I don't care about the SuperDrive. But I'll keep it for Care warranty purposes.

I have a Mac Mini that I plan to use as a simple file server with a 2TB external disk.  I would like to be able to add future external disks to grow the original 2TB volume I create to 4TB, 6TB, etc. using RAID.

I know it is possible to add disks to a concatenated RAID set without destroying the data on the disks already in the set, but I cannot get Disk Utility to let me create a single-disk concatenated RAID set.

OS X Mavericks :: Why No RAID Options For New Disks

Nov 30, 2014

"My name is Shaun, and I am a mac-aholic"

I inserted 4 new 3TB disks into the bays of my Mac Pro (2012), and there is no RAID option for them.

How I got here:

Inserted the WD Red drives, and they were not initiated.

I "erased" the drives, gave them names, and they appear in Disk Utility in grey drives.

Went to set up the RAID, and move the drives into the RAID, but got an error that they could not be used.

It appears to me that disk utility is not allowing me to fully use those drives. I Have created RAID drives before with no issue in RAID1 with 3TB drives before on this machine. Am perplexed, I thought this to be the easy and simple part of my upgrade odyssey! Did I screw up the initialization? On all FOUR drives?

Now, if I click on the drives, the RAID option does not present itself.

FWIW, I am using OS X 10.9.5, on Mac Pro 5,1. I boot from PCIe card. My end goal is to create a 4-disk RAID 10 using the four SATA connections on the MP.

Software :: Disk Options During Backups - Shows Error On Screen

Nov 1, 2010

Over the past few weeks I have been having issues with Time Machine. I have a 2Tb drive for time machine. One of the partitions that it backs up is a raid disk with 2 disks in the concat raid disk. One is a 1Tb Firewire device and the other is a 750Gb USB devcie. What happens is that the backup starts and sometimes works but a lot of times the partition umounts itself and you get an error onscreen pointing out that you have disconnected the drive without unmounting it. A couple of seconds later the drive remounts and all is good again with the drive but the backup has failed. I have rebuilt the backup device and fsck'd the partition in question and I see no errors.

Mac Pro :: Can Clone Hard Drive To A New And Bigger Drive?

Sep 13, 2009

I just cloned my hard drive to a new and bigger drive. I did the OSX 10.5.8 update on the old western digital drive as a safety precaution, so that if it screwed up I would still have a good copy on my new Seagate barracuda. The update looks to have gone well and I will be waiting for a couple of trial days before backing the drive up again. My question is, when I clone the drive again(to the new seagate) how will that work? Should I erase the existing disk image(10.5.7) on that drive or will it overwrite the existing image with the new 10.5.8 one? This is the first time I have used carbon copy and don't really know all the in's and out's of it.

Mac Pro :: How To Clone A Boot Drive On A RAID0?

Jul 14, 2009

I'm planning to replace my boot hard drive with a pair of RAID0ed SSDs. In order to familiarize myself with certain techniques I have build a software RAID0 from two 160 GB Maxtor SATA I hard disks. That went pretty much without problems. The two HDs are now sitting in position 1 and 2 in my Mac Pro.

The problem arises when I try to clone my boot drive onto the new RAID 0 drive. I was using disk utility and got an error message. Then I thought my fault was using disk utility from the HD which I wanted to clone and booted from the Leopard install disk. I then used disdk utility from that source to clone the HD boot drive to the RAID. Again I got the error.

What is going wrong? Do I have to approach this completely different?
