Mac Pro :: Hangs When Booting Alternate Partition
Mar 24, 2008
1) I have on one of the drives a separate OS X partition to boot from (10.4.11). It hangs just as it gets to the desktop and goes no further. I never get a menu bar or a pointer or any of my desktop icons. The booting never finishes. I've tried to re-install the OS, except for problem number 2.
2) When I try to boot from my Mac Pro CD ROM, it does the same thing. It gets to the blue desktop and stops there. No pointer, menu bar, or anything. So I can never get to fix problem number 1.
My main bootable drive in bay 1 still boots just fine, although it frequently seems to take a tad longer. But it does finish the booting process so I have a partition to work with.
I recently replaced the stock cooler on my X1900 graphics card, and that's when the problems started, though I'm not clear how that could be the cause.

I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on an iMac and continuously have problems booting the machine. The boot process occasionally hangs at the gray screen, but more often it hangs at the blue screen. Sometimes it makes it to the login screen where the cursor occasionally freezes. Whenever these problems occur I have to shut down by holding down the start button, then restart again. Usually the second boot is successful. This booting problem occurs frequently, even after running Disk Warrior and repairing permissions. I don't think this is normal behavior. Has anyone else had such problems? Is there anything I can do to correct this behavior, or is this something that needs to be fixed by Apple?

I've now properly installed Windows 7 to my MacBook, but now I'm getting this problem and can't find a fix.
Basically, I turn my MacBook on, select Windows, and it leaves me at a black screen with a flashing underscore for 45 seconds before it actually begins to do anything (making boot times unbarably slow). This is seriously annoying me, but it doesn't seem to have a fix. Edit: Oh, some details. Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit), MacBook Pro 13" (2009), Snow Leopard installed, using rEFIt to multi-boot, bootcamp 3.0, and have never had this problem with any other version of Windows.

I just reinstalled OSX on my MBP last night and today it wont let me boot into it. When the computer is starting up it gets to a blue screen and nothing happens it just stays like that.
I thought at first it was a permissions problem so i Repaired Disk Permissions using my OSX 10.6 disk and still no luck.

I've been running Windows 7 64 bit on my MacBook Pro for many months now and have had no problems with it, however last week my BootCamp partition decided not to launch anymore and instead it goes straight into Startup Repair. Startup Repair is never able to find a problem and shuts my computer down straight after. Now I'm stuck using OS X without the programs and such I need.

I have a G3 Pismo laptop with a 30GB drive. The drive has an OSX partition and a classic partition. However, it recently quit booting form the OSX partition and will not mount this. Disc Utility run from DVD will not repair it. I have used Tech Tool on it three times. After the last "repair" Tech Tool said the volume passed, but it still doesn't mount. I tried using it in Target Disc mode with my G4. Still, only the OS 9 volume mounts. Toast will not create a disc image, so I guess I'm screwed. My only options at this point are older classic utilities. Is there any chance that Disc Warrior for OS 9 will get this volume to mount so I can copy things, format, and reinstall?

I did the Bootcamp thing, partitioned the drive and installed Vista. Everything went well and Vista works just fine. But everytime I boot into windows, I get partition errors before it boots.
For example it says:
"Warning: Unrecognized partition table for Drive 80. Please rebuild it using a Microsoft-compatible FDISK tool (err=4)"
It will come up 3 times, and then boot into Vista. Both OSX and Vista are working fine, but something is definately wrong though since I am getting this error.

Just installed Windows XP using bootcamp and usually no problems switching between operation systems. Recently started using an USB modem for my wireless internet connection. Internet works on both Mac and windows through the modem. Now the problem is whenever I restart or switch on my computer, it shows a black screen if I choose windows partition to boot. No problem if I start through mac partition. If I unplug the USB modem, everything goes fine and I have to plug the modem after starting windows. Is there any solution so that I can permanently plugin the USB modem and avoid booting problem?

I have just upgraded from a Macbook to a Macbook Pro and just swapped my hard drives. My OSX partition still works perfectly but when i now try and boot to my XP installation the laptop hangs and after about 30s i get the grey screen with a folder with a question mark in it which then blinks/flashes on the screen.
Does anyone know why this has happened???? I have googled it but to no avail. I havent tried to re-install windows yet, I hoping there is a quick fix.

I think at some point in the past I had Stuffit Expander installed on my Leopard box. I suspect this because when I browse to a .sit file I still get the choice to 'open with stuffit expander'. If I select this choice I get a text edit file with a bunch of gibberish in it.
I don't want to reinstall Stuffit on my SL box. I remember Stuffit being really invasive and try to take over the unzipping of .zip files from the OS X archive utility, etc.
So, I have two questions;
1. Is there any other way to unpack .sit files?
2. Is there any way to clean out the last traces of my previous stuffit installation?

I recently purchased a mint condition iBook G3 for an absolute steal, but the only problem is it has OS X 10.2.8 on it. I have Tiger but it's on a DVD and this iBook doesn't happen to have a DVD drive on it - just the CD-ROM. I can't really install much of any updated apps (Adobe Reader, Flash player, newer web browsers, etc etc) with 10.2.8 so it's crucial I get it on there. I tried using an external DVD drive I have but no go - the disc never popped up.
My only thoughts on how I could get this on there would be to install it from a .iso image somehow or to use a flashdrive. How would I go about doing this? I'm only vaguely experienced in using OS X so I don't know the programs well enough to know what to download or use - something that's just a trial would be fine if I can use something to mount a .iso image of my Tiger disc that I can put on the machine from a flash drive and install it that way. This is my only Mac so the other computers in my house which I could manipulate the Tiger disc on are Windows 7 based.
I really want to update this iBook so I can see webpages properly (Safari 1.0 is the newest I'm allowed to install and I can't update flash!). I saw someone being able to install it from an iPod but they used the firewire - I have an iPhone 3G if it's easier to somehow install it from that. If this were a PC laptop I already know of Windows based ISO mounting programs, I just need to know of something I can install on an old 10.2.8 install (Something that I cannot seem to find anywhere!!) so either that or the ability to turn a flash drive into what would allow the computer to install Tiger straight off the drive as if it were the disc.

My wife is bombarded with work these days. She works on a 2006 Mac Pro that's in need of a complete OS reinstall. There's almost no time for her to stop and have me work on her machine, unless I did it all in one night, but I hate rushing something like this. I'd like to know if I can build a drive, with all her software, etc., on my 2010 Mac Pro and then simply drop it in her machine when it's complete. Since they're completely different year models will I end up with odd problems?

Trying to reformat my mac mini. I'm a designer and haven't reformat for some time now. I'm fairly new to Mac, I got Original Disc's. I need to reformat but I have no hard-wire keyboard. I know/heard/tried doing the "hold down C" and "option" but I'm assuming its not working because I have a wireless keyboard?
Question: Is there an alternative way in doing a Hard/Complete/Erase reformat when having a wireless keyboard. What options do I have? I have also tried going over to Utility and erase section but the options to select or rename and type, is "un-selectable"? Is this normal?
MY SYSTEM:

Memory - 2gb
Mac OS X - 10.6.4

I just got a new 1080p display that I'm also using as a secondary monitor. I want to use it as a primary monitor when I'm using my MBP, which I know how to do.
However, the applications need to be resized and positioned when you connect it. Are there any applications that can remember sizing + positioning of applications based on which display is your primary?
It'd be useful to make the display my "docking" station of sorts.

I'm trying to find a better archiving tool for sounds and music, particularly useful for sound designers. iTunes has many of the features I like because creates an easy-to-search library for music but I'd like to add other tags to the files and be able to categorize them more specifically by types of sounds/music. Plus, I don't want to add a whole sound library in the middle of my music collection for iTunes.

I have a much loved ibook G4 14" (late 2004??). It has just died. Well, in so much as it won't boot up. The ibook either gets as far as the apple grey screen and hangs, gets to the login screen and hangs, actually loads up finder etc and hangs or none of the above. Sometimes flashing red, blue green black.
After lots of research online over the past few days I tried the following: I have tried safe mode (not working), starting the command prompt screen (single user and verbose modes), started open firmware, and tried booting from a CD. Nothing works as the boot gets so far then hangs. I have flashed the PRam, resetted the NVRam, and have stopped short of opening up the case to dismantle it!
I just really want to access the hard drive now. I have tried Target disk mode and linked the ibook (pressing T) via firewire to a PowerPC G5, but the G5 doesn't recognise the ibook. System profiler on the G5 shows the target mode connected and working fine via firewire, just the icon for the ibook/target doesnt mount on the G5 desktop so I cant access it.Currently the boot freezes within a couple of minutes.I tried the hardware test CD that came with the ibook years ago, I have also tried booting from an OSX Panther CD. I'm assuming they would be bootable.
I forgot to mention that in linking with the G5 in target mode, a disk that I put in the ibook drive appeared on the G5 desktop as an external drive, therefore I wonder why i cannot see the actual ibook drive mounted. The CD drive works as it mounted on the G5.Does the ibook have an actual PRam battery that can be replaced? Maybe this is an issue?Am I able to actually remove the hard-drive and access it as an external drive somehow?
