OS X :: Leopard Install On G5 / Need Command Line Firmware Info

Sep 22, 2008

I have a Power MAC G5 that "has" Tiger 10.4.2 on it. The problem is that it wont boot past "login window starting". So I decided to buy Leopard. Problem is that it keeps kicking the DVD out during the "c" boot. Now I am told the system might need a firmware update for the DVD player.
"Apple Superdrive Firmware Update 2.1". Heres my problem: I cant boot into Tiger. I get stuck at the login screen. So I want to know if there is a way to do a firmware update in "Single user mode".

MacBook Pro :: EFI Firmware Update 2.5 & Booting OS 10.6.x?

Apr 23, 2012

Are there any known compatibiity issues with booting from an OS 10.6.x drive after installing EFI Firmware Update 2.5?I am running Lion (10.7.3) on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2010) but have held off installing the firmware update because being able to boot from a 10.6.x backup drive is more important right now than internet-based Lion recovery. If there's no issue booting 10.6.x (and running apps), then I will go ahead and install the firmware update, otherwise I'll wait awhile longer.

OS X :: Open Firmware Password - Booting From Another Volume

Nov 5, 2010

I've just set up an Open Firmware Password for the first time. My understanding is that this would prevent booting the Mac from another volume (i.e. an OS X install DVD). After setting up the password and rebooting my machine, I decided to test things out by inserting my OS X install DVD and selecting it from the "Startup Disk" preference pane. Lo and behold, it rebooted from the DVD without asking for the password.

I recently attempted to install the most recent firmware and security updates for mac os x 10.5.8 on my macbook pro 17 inch (purchased about 14 months ago). Computer asked me to reboot, i did, it then gave me instructions for firmware updates.

The screen went dark, and it did its thing, and I returned 10 minutes later. The computer had not rebooted.I pressed the startup key and it gave a long beep. Screen remained dark. Some minutes later it ran the boot cycle, but booted into windows (i have dual boot set up). I can only get into windows now.

OS X :: Command Line Interface And B2zipped Tarball

Aug 30, 2010

A good friend who has used Macs professionally for years has asked me to send him a big stack of HTML documents and my instinct is to put them into a tarball, b2zip it, and send him that. I asked whether he could handle it and he told me to send each document separately, uncompressed. I use Linux, so I know you folks have an excellent OS that is BSD-based and can handle lots of bash commands I use. Accordingly I want to tell my friend how to do it all in one easy step from the CLI. He has no idea what I'm talking about, does not know how to get to the CLI, and did not even know Macs have them until I mentioned it to him.

So could you kindly provide my friend with a no-assumptions, comprehensive, clear list of beginner's instructions that will tell him exactly what to do to? He needs to:
1. Get into the CLI
2. Locate the tarball he downloaded from Gmail
3. Unzip it and open it
4. Get out of the CLI and back into the GUI.

I would deal with the tarball this way: $ tar xjvf ./texts.tar.bz2. Could he use that command? I don't have any idea how to leave the graphic world on a Mac. My view is that fulfilling his request will be difficult and a lot of work for him as well if I don't use a tarball, and he needs to learn something about the OS he's using. I'll be interested to see how Mac users do it, as well. Yes, I expect the job can be done in the GUI on a Mac, but as I say, I would like to expand his universe (and mine) just a bit. Dragging him out of the GUI won't hurt him, and the learning experience could give him a bit more respect for the power and flexibility of the OS he uses daily.

All the fans are working however the fans next to the heatsink seems to run a bit slow then others. I have unplugged all the extra hardware (RAID Card). Have reseated the memory and have tried different memories. Did the PRAM reset.

MacBook Air :: MBA Not Booting At All?

Jun 17, 2008

I've got a MacBook Air (not mine) with me at the moment and I believe it's got quite a big problem.

Basically when you turn the Air on a black screen display for a couple of seconds with the chimes playing then a white screen appears at which point you can go no further.

I've tried everything; pressing the Option key to try and display the two partitions on the SSD, resetting the PRAM and SMC, pressing the D key and pressing the C key to try and get the install disc started in the connected SuperDrive. Nada.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on this problem before I take it to KRCS in Nottingham for diagnosis and repair? Maybe there is something I've missed or others have had a similar problem?
