PowerPC :: G4 Superdrive Won't Accept Discs?
May 1, 2008
There's no disc in the drive, but it's locked up and won't accept a disc into the slot whatever I do. It never had trouble reading discs before--none of the spinning-without-reading issues I'm seeing other people have had. I have frequently ended up with ghost discs, when the computer hangs onto a disc image (or two) after ejecting the actual discs, but it's never caused a real problem. There is no disc image now.

I just got off the phone with Apple support and I was told I should bring in my iMac to an apple store to get it checked out. However, I am EXTREMELY busy. So in the meantime I was wondering if anyone could help fix this issue: I have a brand new iMac literally purchased a month ago, 21.5", when I insert a disc it keeps it for about three seconds and pops it right out, the disc does not even register with my computer. Is there anyway to fix this without having to go all the way to the Apple store (I don't own a car).

My dvd player has suddenly stopped accepting discs. The disc only goes in half way before it hits something, almost like there was a disc already in there, but there isn't.The previous disc was ejected. Restarting doesn't change anything. It may be that the disc drive itself needs to be replaced, but that would involve a lot of hassle.

I have a 15" unibody Macbook pro
The last time I used my cd drive was a couple months ago to burn a cd.
The cd didn't come out so I followed the steps to eject it and it came out properly. Since then I haven't used the drive until recently. When I went to enter a cd to burn some songs onto it, the drive wouldn't accept any discs. As if there was something in there but there is nothing.
some steps to get my cd/dvd drive to accept discs again please?

So I've recently been trying to burn my ubuntu.iso to a CD, but every time I insert a blank CD the superdrive holds it for a few seconds then just spits it back out. I've tried to burn it with Disk Utility and Toast 9, but it just says it's waiting for the Superdrive.

MATSHITA DVD-R  UJ-85J: Superdrive won't accept CD or DVD keeps spitting back out - alas 1000's of iMacs with this superdrive have had the SAME problem from what I have read elsewhere. Apple should replace for free or discount for us out of warranty [URL]

I'm having issues with the computer, among which is that the superdrive will not accept any disks... it clicks a couple of times, then spits the disk out. This has been an intermittent problem for about 5 months, but now it seems to be constant. Disk Utility and Disk Warrior (hard drive based) say that I have problems that can only be fixed by restarting with a system disk or DW disk inserted.
I did do the System Management Controller reset but it didn't work. I'll take the computer to an apple store if need be, but is there any way to force a disk to be accepted and read? Also, since I bought Lion via the app store, and have no system disk. Is there a way to fix my hard drive without a physical system or repair disk? I do have the physical disk for Leopard if that would work on Lion. I can't get a CD or DVD to stay in the drive and be read.

I just got a Mac Pro (2006/2007) and Installed Vista Ultimate x64 from a DVD. When I rebooted and got to the Vista desktop, it no longer lets me used the superdrive. I can eject it from Vista but when I insert a disc, all it does is spin up forever and lock up Vista.
I have reloaded Vista 3 times and get the same issue. Everything else works except the superdrive.

Why dont you post the explanation for certain MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 superdrives not being able to read: dvds/ cds/ blank dvds/ blank cds/ burned dvds/ burned cds or a combination thereof?
Apple's firmware 2.1 update released late june 2007 unwittingly fried many superdrives functionality and apple pulled the firmware update as soon as the buzz on the internet took hold, but not before many drives were randomly zapped.
Unfortunately it seems that apple doesnt publicly admit any problems on their website, in the hope that users will not notice the loss of functionality (my drive cant recognise blank/burned media, but published (pressed) dvds and cds are recognised, hence one doesn't notice there is a problem at first).

My Macbook Pro is approaching its second birthday and now refuses to accept any DVDs, it takes them, swirls them around making a funny noise for a few seconds and then spits the disc back out. I want update to Snow Leopard, but can't, I want to install Windows 7, but can't and more importantly can't even run FM2010! I can't see how Apple can justify charging so much and have the nerve to call the drive 'super', when it is clearly not. Reading across the net on forums this seems to be a common problem and one that Apple don't want to know. Can anyone recommend an external DVD drive to buy?

As title says... notebook is reading and accepting that the Superdrive is there, but when a disc is inserted, it spins for 15-30 seconds and ejects.

The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 can't mount disks, both CD and DVD, about 90 percent of the time. I've tried resetting the PRAM, but I don't know if it's related to this.

My MacBook Pro running OSX Lion no longer recognizes blank discs: the disc does not appear on the desktop or in finder.
When I try to burn a playlist from iTunes I get the error message: "The burner is in use by another application".I am also unable to eject the disc using Disk Utility and have to reboot to get the disc out.Other media discs (software, music etc.) are read without a problem.

I have just brought back an external superdrive to my local Apple Store because it wouldn't physically swallow any disc. So I got a new one and back home ... same problem. I plugged it to my mac mini, my MacBook Pro, my 1st portable PC, my tower pc ... nothing. I made sure the second time that I didn't plug it to the same mac first (in case I had a faulty USB port which could destroy the superdrive). Plus it ejects CDs and DVDs fine if I insert one 3/4 into it. So the mechanism is working, but no matter what I do, it won't swallow any disc.

I have inherited two PowerMac G4 450 MHz AGP machines for use at the non-profit arts organization that I help run. I believe these are either the "Sawtooth" configuration [URL] or the "Mystic" configuration [URL], probably the former.
They each came with two 128 MB DIMMs (256 MB RAM each), which is anemic of course, so I bought two DIMMs of 512 MB RAM of the same type, intending to add one to each machine. Same bus speed (133 MHz) and voltage configuration (contact edge indents) as the existing memory. There are 4 DIMM slots.
The DIMMs go into the slot just fine, but are not recognized by the system. It boots up as if they aren't there; there are no abnormal boot beeps or flashing power button. It just doesn't count them as existing in the RAM pool (per "About This Mac").
I did try both DIMMs all by themselves, separately in the first slot and together in the first two, and those boots failed with the warning beep, flashing power button, and no video.
I can take these back to the vendor (a trusted local whitebox shop) and have them test them, but is there something special that I need besides PC133 SDRAM?
I noticed that these new 512MBs are 16-chip DIMMs, and the existing 128MBs are 8-chip DIMMs. Does that matter? I vaguely recall that there's a difference between 16-chip and 8-chip.

i have a powermac g5 dual 1.8 tower. the dvd burner is a pioneer dvd-rw dvr-107d. according to the system profiler, this should be able to burn either - or +R discs and cds. also, the computer belonged to a friend who was using it to burn dvds up until the day she delivered it to me.
i switched out the harddrive and reinstalled everything fresh (in case that matters.)
now when i put in a blank dvd or cd (different brands, different formats) it comes up with an error message that says: This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized.

I've got an aging powerpc iBookG4 that came with OSX Panther (10.3)... time's taken it's toll on the old thing and it needs a refresh. Problem is I can't find the install discs, would I be able to use the install discs that came with my intel MacBook? I think buying a copy of Leopard would be too much for it.

I just bought the new 24" iMac and I looked at the backup discs and they said it could install OSX Tiger. I also have an old iBook G4 I got my moms friend who moved. I know the iBook could handle 10.4 as it has 10.3.9 now but what I was wondering was. If I could install the OS on the iBook from the iMac backup discs. I but the disc in the iBook and it wanted me to restart to begin the installation of OSX but I quickly backed out. Do you guys think If I proceed with the installation it will install smoothly or, should I just forget about it.

I am new to this forums and want to know if my dvd mini discs will fit into the dvr drive on an iMac. I also have an older Powerbook and would also like to know if the mini discs will fit also. I haven't tried this yet because I don't want to loose the discs or ruin my drives. I just bought a used iMac 20" widescreen and wanted to just put my mini discs from my camcorder into it without having to plug the unit in via hard wire.

However, I don't have the iBook's system discs because my mother lost them (she was using the iBook until I gave her my MacBook).
I called Apple to get new system discs, and they sent me an OSX 10.5.6 Retail Install DVD to install on the iBook, but this doesn't include iLife.
Obviously it's not the end of the world if I don't include iLife (even if it is iLife 05), but I think it would help me sell the iBook if iLife was included.
