OS X :: Burning Data DVDs - Discs Not Able To Read By Mac
Nov 28, 2009
I'm having issues with burning data DVDs on my Mackbook Pro (running Snow Leopard) I'm burning large files (DVD/Blu-Ray rips) and the discs are unreliable. I'm trying to pinpoint the problem but haven't been able to. Some of the discs are not able to be read by the Mac - sometimes it spits the disc out a few seconds after being inserted...other discs just spin and spin and spin and it seems the Mac cannot read them - I can't even eject them without rebooting the computer. There seems to be no rhyme or reason between discs that read OK and discs that don't. Some discs were burned via the internal superdrive and some via a Sony USB dual layer burner. All discs burn and verify OK - there was no indication on any of them that anything went wrong. I am using Sony and Memorex discs, single and dual layer. Are there any known issues with either the Mac superdrive, or the burning of large (4+ GB - almost 8 GB) single files? I've got a good number of discs here and like I said all burned OK...but I've been having to go back to retrieve files and am only now finding that some of the discs are giving the problems described above, which means many of the backups I thought were legit are no good. Alternatively, if there is a better method for backing up these files . They are stored on hard drives being used by a streaming video player. I thought backing up each file to DVD would be a reliable backup method but apparently this is not the case. It's not ideal to back up to other hard drives - there are too many files and it would be too expensive. I don't know that online backups would be feasible because of the amount of time it would take to upload them and the space they would take up would likely be too expensive to maintain.

I am a graphic designer and often supplied with photos from the photographer after a shoot. My computer Intel Corei7(2009), running 10.6.8 with OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H drive, shows the disk as a blank disk (even in disk utility). Other older Macs available to me read the disk just fine. current disk that cannot be read: recordable memorex dvd-r?

The drive in my G5 tower will read/write commercial or blank CDs and will read/write blank DVDs, however, it will not read most commercial DVDs. When I insert them it tries to read it then after a few seconds it just spits them back out. Occasionally commercial DVDs will read and mount fine, but this seems to be rare.

I was burning a few discs the other day and noticed that my iMac is leaving ~1cm curved scratch marks around the middle of the disc (ie, about equal distance between the hole in the middle and the edge). It won't do it every time, but I'd say about 50%. Anybody have any clue what's causing the scratches?

What's the matter with Apple, don't they know there is such things as DVDs . I have quite a lot of DVDs from my day's with a PC, but now I have a iMac I don't seem to be able to use them except for 1 time recording. Say for accounting , if I use the disc utility I cannot use them more than once and the same with Roxio Toast. If the backup is only 39mb that is an awful waste of a DVD to only use it once. Alternatively am I wrong with my approach's to use more than once?

I'm trying to burn copies of dvds, like the second season of the office for example. On my PC we used DVDshrink to rip the dvd and then the same program would burn a copy on a blank dvd. I downloaded Mactheripper and ripped the dvd, and burned it using the burn folder in the finder. The first time the file was too large [ 7 something gb when the dvd is only 4] The second time I thought it worked but when I went to watch it it said "incorrect disc" I'm not sure if I'm doing somehting wrong of if there is a better program for ripping and shrinking the size of dvds?

Mac Book Pro / 10.5.8 Impossible to burn DVD, it refuses to burn then ejects the DVD. (It's not the first time, the computer has already been fixed for a similar problem and it then didn't accept any DVD, even for playing). For the moment he can read. I've tried only Verbatim DVD+R or DVD-R. Through Toast Titanium 10.0 or not.
Error code 0x8002006E
or
Sense key = Medium Error
Sense Code = 0x0C
WRITE ERROR
Notice that with CDs, all is right, burning and reading. It seems then not to be a "mechanical" problem. I'd like to know what does this code mean? How to fix? Can you tell me what to do and propose some solution?

I bought Roxio Toast Titanium 5.0 and downloaded the 5.2.1 update so I could burn some DVDs on my iMac (which is about 2 months old). I set it to record a video_ts file from one of the DVD discs that I've ripped to the hard drive. It records the files and verifies, then it says that the DVD was burned fine. The problem is that when I try it on any DVD player, the disc will not play. It won't play in a stand-alone DVD player, on the iMac nor on my PC. I checked what was burned, and all the files were recorded fine. I've gone through 6 discs with the same result. The only time it recorded anything viewable, was when I set it for "disc copy" and even then, the entire DVD was not recorded because of some error and when I popped it in the player, the portion that was recorded was very pixelated and unwatchable.

last week i tried burning a dvd using roxio toast, but before it began to burn it says the following error: the drive reported an error: sense key = medium error sence code = 0x73, 0x03 i tried to use another dvd, but it is saying the same error (i have been using the same brand of dvd before but never encountered such problems), so tried to restart, and it proceeded to burn, no more errors, so i thought it was only a one time thing, so today, i tried burning again, the same thing happen, the same error, i tried 4 dvd's but the same error keeps on happening, but when i restart the macbook pro, it would proceed to burn with no errors. i wonder what seems to be the problem? my dvd drive or the software? anyone encountered the same problem before?

I want to burn a DVD from a video I have on my hard drive. I want it to play on DVD players as well as my iMac. But what I don't want is the smarmy "Themes" iDVD insist there be on the result. IS there a way I can do this without the Themes or will I have to use a different burner? Some videos I have are .avi, DVIX, .wmv, etc. I'm sure that the starting format has nothing to do with my problem, but one never knows. I'm running OSX 10.6.2 and am really happy with it. Although, I haven't see any difference when running it in 64-bit mode. But maybe if I were using more 64-bit software?

I just got a Mac Pro (2006/2007) and Installed Vista Ultimate x64 from a DVD. When I rebooted and got to the Vista desktop, it no longer lets me used the superdrive. I can eject it from Vista but when I insert a disc, all it does is spin up forever and lock up Vista.
I have reloaded Vista 3 times and get the same issue. Everything else works except the superdrive.

First, my MacBook is a little more than a year old and is no longer covered under warranty, so I would like to try any possible fixes (like cleaning the drive) before having to buy a new drive. Here's my problem: when I put a CD or DVD into the drive, it spins around and clicks a lot but never seems to really catch, and after about a minute or so of this, it ejects itself. It never shows up on my desktop, so the computer is unable to read anything from the CD or DVD. I know the problem is not the CD or DVD, because I've tried the same discs on other machines and they work fine. This problem came up on me gradually. It started happening a few months ago, and maybe only 1 out of 10 or 20 discs would it do this. Then it became a third of the time, then half of the time, and now it's about 99% of the time I try to insert a disc. I was able to get one disc to work a few days ago, but when I ejected it and reinserted it, it didn't work the second time.

My MBP 2.33Ghz has always been with discs but its starting to become a pain, a friend burnt a disc for me the other day which it read but thought it was blank.
Last night I put a +R DL DVD that worked in another machine and it just ejected it, I then put my 10.5 disc in and it worked fine.

I have unusual, although not debilitating issue with DVDs made on a white 13-inch MB (MB2,1, mid-2007, 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, SuperDriveDVD=Matshita DVD-R UJ-857E) running Tiger 10.4.11 which cannot be read on a MBPro 15.4-inch (MBP4,1, early-2008, 2,4GHz, 2GB RAM, SuperDriveDVD player=HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N) running SnowLeopard 10.6.4.
The DVDs were burned, a couple of years ago, on the white MB and contain a copies of files from my user (administrator) directory, mostly iWork and MSOffice files.
I am able to read the contents of the DVDs and open the individual files on the white MB but not on my MBPro: when I insert the disk, a finder window appears saying I have inserted a blank DVD and asks me how I wish to proceed in using it.
There many ways to recover the files, not least using the MB I created them with, but I would like to understand why this is occurring. Anyone have any ideas?

I have an older Power Mac G5 that I had problems with, and hoped I could get a little help.I wanted to start fresh, so I booted the Mac OSX software disk that came with the computer, and I was able to get my computer back to factory fresh (software-wise). After I reloaded the OSX (and did all of the software updates from Apple), I tried loading a program from an original installation CD/DVD. It would not load--it tried, but eventually ejected the disk. This happened over and over--I tried different types of discs (music CDs, DVDs, software), and the ONLY CDS/DVDs that work are the MAC OSX installation discs. I have tried using a DVD lense cleaner and compressed air.

Why my mac (no matter iMac or macbook) can not read DVD data disk which was burned more than twice by Nero on Windows. My Mac can alway only read the data from first time burned.
For example, the DVD burned data A by Nero on Windows. Several days later I burned data B into the DVD. Then, it's data C.

my ibook doesn't read dvds anymore like it used to, but it will read blank ones if i use an external dvd drive, but when i try and insert a normal dvd (ive tried a lot of dvds so its not just one disc) in the laptop drive or the external one, it says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and gives me an option to ignore or eject.
i tried creating a new account, but the same thing happened, so i used my install disks to install mac os x on an external drive and booted from that and the disk worked! but, ive got lots of important data on the laptop drive, so im stuck here.

I have Windows XP 32 bit running under bootcamp on my early 2008 Macbook Pro.
I think the problem started last week, when I was burning about 4 isos on 4 different DVDs. Then after that I wanted to watch a movie on a dvd while I was still on Windows, but whenever I start the movie the mouse pointer would move slowly and the movie would get choppy. Even when I'm transferring files from a CD to Windows the files would take longer than usual to finish copying.
So I switched to Mac OS and tried playing the movie again from the dvd. When it played I noticed that it's playing normally and it's not a hardware issue that I'm having. So I thought that the problem was gone and I should check if the dvd would run smoothly on Windows like it's running under Mac OS. But when I tried it on Windows the problem was still there, the dvd is still running slowly.

I am running OSX 10.7.3. Yesterday all my thousands of fonts completely disappeared from Suitcase Fusion 2. I was told by Extensis that I could not get them back, but that I needed to upgrade to Fusion 3 which would be compatible with Lion. I did that. When I tried to get my stored fonts off the CDs and DVDs I'd stored them on all the CDs appeared to be blank and I got a message on the DVD that it cannot be read on my computer. (I have used all these CDs and DVDs before.)
