I tend to just leave my new Mac Pro on all the time so I don't have to re-open apps and get all my windows back into their proper Spaces, but I wonder if there's an easy way to disable the internet while I'm not using it, short of disconnecting the ethernet cable. I've looked through System Prefs and can't seem to find that option.
View 12 RepliesEver since updating to OS X 10.7.3 I can't get my Internet Sharing to function for wifi. I enable this to use my iPod at home. The computer 'says' Internet Sharing is on but my iPod searches and doesn't find a signal. Plus, the four bars at the top right of the screan do not change to a solid color with the arrow pointing up like it used to when enabled and working.

I'm running Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac on Mac OSX 10.4.11. For my Mac, I have one administrator account, and two managed user accounts. My son uses one of the managed user accounts to run Parallels.The issue is that I don't want Parallels to be able to access the internet (more specifically, I don't want my son to be able to use Parallels/windows to access the internet). I know I can turn off the internet in Parallels through the Parallels configuration settings, but it can just be turned right back on. There is no password protection to ensure that the settings aren't changed. Or am I missing something? Is there an administrative password that I can enable to prevent tampering with the Parallels configuration settings?

My MacBook and my father's iMac connect easily and have connected to the internet for as long as we have had these computers (a few years). The other MacBook has connected up until a few weeks ago (it is a year younger than my MacBook). A few weeks ago, when the MacBook was closed (put to sleep but not shut down) and reopened, the airport symbol would display a working airport and connection but when I clicked Safari, it would not connect.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have connected my Aluminium Macbook (2008) to my HDTV via a Mini Display to HD port.This works fine when I mirror the image from my macbook. When I turn off mirror image however (IE effectively having two seperate screens) my internet slows down drastically. In some cases it also disconnects. This issue is resolved by turning on the mirror screen button, or unplugging the cable from the laptop.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running a macbook only a couple of months old so i go the cheap as chips dvd for SL Installed it and things seem fine except the fun that office 2008 wont load at all (gotta love MS) Now though i can not authenticate myself to change accounts in preferences even though i am the only user and i am the admin user. i click on the lock and it simply saying "authenticating" then goes back to "click lock to change settings" this is annoying as i cant do much in terms of users etc and i think this is lnked to the fact that i can't install not programs. In fact i couldn't even install the additional programs from the install DVD!!! i got to the final button to actually instal after selecting the location etc and it does nothing after clicking install. No password prompt or nothing.

He keeps having wireless problems because he likes to play with it and whenever one of his dam sites wont load he thinks its the computers fault and messes it up. Is there anyway to remove the wifi icon from the menu bar and lock access to system prefs and anything else that he casn use to destroy the computer? I looked at parental controls and they dident do what i wanted.

I recently changed my Apple ID. When I try to make changes to my iCloud account on my Mac., I cannot access the account via System Preferences. I've changed the password once already. My iPhone's iCloud account is fine. At this point my iCloud account no longer is working with my Mac.

I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 17" MBP. (2009) How do I set the default size of all the windows? Every time I open a program a rather small window with minuscule fonts opens, so I would like to set some kind default to make it easier on my old eyes.

View 15 Replies View RelatedI noticed my "spotlight" icon has a pulsing dot in the center of the magnifying glass icon....when I click on it there is a progress bar and it is perpetually "indexing" my hard drive.
Whats this mean? Is my HDD going to fail? Its been going on like this for months. Running Drive Utility, Techtool or Disk Warrior doesn't fix it.
I fixed permissions and repaired the disk off the Snow Leopard book disk, problem persists.

Everytime I go to play any type of online based game my internet seems to kinda fade in and out, and it eventually just disconnects, or tells me it's limited or no connectivity. From there I either reconnect to the internet manually or just repair it.I don't think it has anything to do with my Windows Firewall, since I have it disabled all the time. I use Avast AV, and disable their live AV services usually.
General - MacBook Pro labtop - Online games working just fine with internet while running on Mac mode. Games such as Runescape, Adventure Quest Worlds, and other Mac compatible games. - Boot Camp mode for Windows XP pro-when I run my pc in this mode, it is when I encounter my problems.I have Avast live services disabled, and Windows firewall disabled.
My wireless in my computer sucks! it fades in and out bad while my girls old PC works great sitting right next to me. I am about 30ft way from my router and up a level but it used to work fine, not 1/2 the time it wont even pick up a signal and I have to walk out of my room to get it. After I do that my wireless works just fine, like it is now. But there is no reason why another computer works great right next to mine and mine wont hardly connect to the internet. Some times my wireless says it is connected(the bars on the menu), but my internet wont work still. Like I said if i move closer everything seems to work fine.Do you all think it is the wireless card or something else. I dont want to take my computer some were and get reemed by their prices because I can do the physical part of the wireless card instal myself. Is there any other parts to it if that is the problem?
View 7 Replies View RelatedFour years ago I bought the iMac I am using right now, I was a PC user (actually used Macs in the 90s) and I never knew if I was doing things properly. Since I am buying a new iMAc next week I need to know how to organize folders.
In my current iMac I have all my applications in the applications folder, I think that is ok. But for example, for my Photoshop and Flash projects I have made a folder in the Macintosh HD with my name and inside that folder I have many other folders. How should I organize my work? Should I put them in the documents folder or what?
I've tried many options and none I felt were that stellar: Cha Ching (now gone), MoneyWell, Money, iBank. iBank I stuck with the longest, actually, but it's really getting on my nerves because the interface is crappy in some spots. The programmers just have no clue about good user interface design, and it's frustrating as hell. Plus they don't listen to input.

my MBP has been really underperforming. Things take longer on my Macbook, then on my 10yr old machine with 512mb of ram and openbox. Also, firefox, has been going extremely slow, and crashing. I'm not using beta, and I have opened it in safe mode, and it still crashes.I know there must be something wrong. Both my brother and some of his friends with macs have also been experiencing stuff slowing down. So the first thing, I though it might be is that there is an update, or something like that. So I updated, but no go. It's still slow. And just the other day, I got to see this for the first time.

I used to be able to use Internet sharing without any issues. I share from ethernet 1 to wifi so my iPad etc can have strong wifi everywhere etc.
Everything is the same, I can set it up but when I check the box and then hit start, the airport icon flashes between a hollow shape and the bars a few times and then nothing happens. When it works the icon has an arrow in it.

As I understand it, iPhoto pulls all address details direct from Mail so why would it falter.
Is smcFanControl still the best to use to increase rpm's on fans for macs? Or is there anything new out?This iMac get EXTREMELY HOT on the top left corner it can burn your hand how bad it is.The atual temps are within limits with istat but that excessive heat on the back left top corner is concerning me. If i keep my hand on it for more then 5 seconds it will actually burn my hand.

All of a sudden my internet got really slow. I began looking around and found that it was probably a DNS issue so I added 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 to my DNS server list and my internet began to work nice and speedy like it use to. The only problem is that whenever I added these I can no longer access my school's mail server. At this point I am completely clueless and really don't want to have to pick between e-mail access and fast internet.
