Mac Pro :: Superdrive Not Reading Unless I Reboot
Mar 14, 2012I have a 2009 Intel CPU MAC PRO 2.66 Quad Core OSX Lion that will not read a DVD unless I reboot. After a while it will do this again and then I reboot and it reads again.

Jan 7, 2011I'm in the process of backing up my DVD collection as so far has worked fine, now i have got to my "Friends" boxset it will not read them. It has read them before now it just wont. If i put another show or movie DVD in it will read it just seems to be the "Friends" DVD's.

Jan 31, 2008Why dont you post the explanation for certain MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 superdrives not being able to read: dvds/ cds/ blank dvds/ blank cds/ burned dvds/ burned cds or a combination thereof?
Apple's firmware 2.1 update released late june 2007 unwittingly fried many superdrives functionality and apple pulled the firmware update as soon as the buzz on the internet took hold, but not before many drives were randomly zapped.
Unfortunately it seems that apple doesnt publicly admit any problems on their website, in the hope that users will not notice the loss of functionality (my drive cant recognise blank/burned media, but published (pressed) dvds and cds are recognised, hence one doesn't notice there is a problem at first).
OS X Mavericks :: SuperDrive Ejects CDs Without Reading Them
Sep 10, 2014I reset the System Management Controller and it didn't work, and I'm wondering if there's anything else I can try, or if there's a way to definitively determine if my SuperDrive is dead --- I don't MIND replacing the drive, but I don't want to replace a mis-diagnosed good one.

Laptops :: Superdrive Freezing DVDs - Not Reading Menus In MBP
Sep 2, 2008I've rented 3 dvds from Netflix and tried to watch them in my MBP, thinking there was a problem with the dvd, but they all have the same issues. The video will suddenly freeze but the audio keeps going. The only way I can get out of this frozen screen is to use the remote that came w/ my MBP to eject the dvd. Also, the dvd menus are no longer functional. I can only press play but I can not navigate the menus with my remote, or with the mouse (the mouse cursor disappears now when I put a dvd in the drive). When I press play, it will play for about 10 minutes and then freeze. It seems like each time it's freezing about halfway into a track/chapter. I can eject the dvd, go back to the beginning, skip forward to the next track, and rewind to just after the point where it freezes, but I have to do this with EVERY track/chapter.
And I have to eject it every time or it won't play at all. This is a dvd-burning Superdrive. I have no idea how I would go about replacing the drive if it's broken, as it's built into the laptop with no way that I can see to access it. The laptop is just barely out of warranty. Here's another Mac oddity: when I log into Apple's own forums, the option to post a new thread in any of their forums is gone. It's not at the top of the page where it used to be, nor is it anywhere on any of the pages that I've visited. I'm talking about when I go to the main discussions page, and then click on the link for Macbook Pro or iPod, there's nothing there for posting.

MacBook Air :: Slightly Ticker With Superdrive Or Slightly Thinner Without Superdrive?
Jul 27, 2008I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

So I moved all the stuff onto it and then when I connected the HD to my PC, it wouldn't come up. It comes up on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' thing but not in My Computer.

Apr 26, 2012I just picked up this macbook refurbished that came with 1GB of ram. So I picked up 2 1GB sticks to replace the old ram. When I installed it I got a black screen. So I put one of the old(512MB) sticks back in and it booted up fine and read 1.5GB. So I ran a bunch of different combinations of new and old sticks to make sure that I did not have a bad piece of ram and all of them work fine, just not when I use 2 1GB sticks. I have to have one new and one old for it to work.

Apr 30, 2012Our dvd drive on our Power Mac 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core intel.The drive is an Optiarc dvd rw ad-717a: sometimes will not read inserted discs. These discs work ok when tried on our I mac. Other discs work fine. This has occurred with discs that have bee writen in the drive as well as supplied discs.

PowerPC :: G4 Not Reading WD 120 External HD
Dec 26, 2007Transferring files from my PowerBook G4(1.5ghz/2gb Ram). I was using a flash drive for some stuff but I wanted to put some large video files on my external hard drive. I plugged in the Western Digital HD, 120Gb, but my powerbook would not read it. Is this because I originally used this hd on my pc? Or does the laptop not have enough juice to power the external?

Nov 20, 2008My macbook pro cd drive seems to be acting up. It doesn't like to read any of my burnt cd/dvd-r, but it reads 'proper' and blank DVDs just fine (by 'proper' i mean like DVD movies, Apple Tiger OSX dvd, and such).. The discs that it refuses to read are fine, no scratches or anything. It takes the disc in, spins and tries to read it for about 3 times and spits it out. I've tried using those DVD lens cleaner discs with brushes on them.. but they didn't help. I've also tried resetting my PRAM (and the other one where you hold the power button for 5 seconds while shut down), and that didn't help either.. If it matters, my superdrive details are: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D: Firmware Revision:KCV9 My machine is bit over 2 years old, so it's no longer on warranty/AppleCare. Has anyone encountered this before?

Oct 16, 2009Just bought Art Explosion 750,000 It read and installed disc 1, disc 2, 3 work. Won't read/recognize disc 4-5. Anybody tell why? I put the disc in the tray,nothing happens .I may hear a very faint sound like it's trying to start, then nothing. Sometimes it ejects it.

Feb 11, 2010I have Fusion installed on my Mac, and it's all updated and runs fine, and I'm trying to install a program off a Windows-only CD. The problem is the drive in my Mac doesn't seem to accept it. It just ticks a few times and spits the CD back out. Is there a way around this? I've already been high and low on the VMWare site and it appears the virtual machine is communicating with the CD drive just fine.

Mar 7, 2010Bought a MacBook about a year and half ago and have had no issues until today. I have been able to burn numerous CD's and DVD's but for some reason today when I tried to burn a CD it keeps spitting the blank CD out. I doesn't seem to recognize any disk. When I put a disk in it makes a quiet noise like it's trying to read it but after a few seconds spits it out. No application seems to recognize any disk either.

Jun 17, 2010I have a bunch of important .xml chatlogs from msn messenger that I need to read, but unfortunately I can't find any programme that will open them for me (nicely). Double clicking on the file opens a blank page in Safari, whereas opening it using TextEdit gives me a whole bunch of code which is really hard to sift through..
I downloaded firefox which lets me read the words in the chatlog without the codings and whatnot, but the words aren't arranged properly and it just appears as one whole chunk of text.

Mar 18, 2012Safari 5.1.4 running under Lion (10.7.3) and the previous Safari version on Snow Leopard alyway tries to open a pdf file using the Quicktime plugin. This results is a mostly unreadable document. The previous versions didn't do that. If I go to Library/Internet Plugins and remove Quicktime plugin.plugin Safari works as before.

ITunes Music CDs Not Reading?
Jun 24, 2012I have a Mac Mini running 10.5.8 and the latest version of iTunes, 10.6.3. I used to be able to burn music discs at maximum speed with no problem. Lately when I burn a disc, my CD player won't read it. (But the Mac Mini will recognize it as a music disc.) Over the years, I have taken many suggestions to improve the stability of burns. "Only use Verbatim discs," someone said. OK. And yes, I am using CD-Rs, not CD-RWs. "Slow down the burn speed," someone said. Yep. That worked for awhile. But now it's not working.

Dec 25, 2010I have a iBook G4. The cd player all of a sudden is not reading a dvd or a cd when inserted. Never have had a problem with it at all. It tries to read it and then just ejects it. Tried to reinstall a new dvd software for the dvd player but didn't help. Just tried to insert a blank cd to burn jpgs to it and did the same thing, just ejected it.

Nov 13, 2007It will draw them in, groan like it's about to spin up, pause, then groan some more. I hear it spin up a tiny bit, but not to the rate it usually does. The fact that it's spinning at all makes me think it's a read head/lens dirty problem.
