OS X Mavericks :: SuperDrive Ejects CDs Without Reading Them
Sep 10, 2014
I reset the System Management Controller and it didn't work, and I'm wondering if there's anything else I can try, or if there's a way to definitively determine if my SuperDrive is dead --- I don't MIND replacing the drive, but I don't want to replace a mis-diagnosed good one.
Computer: Late 2011, 21.5" 2.5 GHz Intel iMac, OS 10.9.4

My Macbook pro has started to eject cds and dvds without reading them. This is a new development, it did not used to do this.
I have tried a number of different cds and dvds but none seem to be accepted.
What can be done...do I need take it in or is the problem fixable?

As title says... notebook is reading and accepting that the Superdrive is there, but when a disc is inserted, it spins for 15-30 seconds and ejects.

I have never had any problems with this SuperDrive, until I installed Toast last week. I went to burn a disk, and it failed the burn; then after that any kind of disk I inserted into the drive would be ejected.
The drive doesn't even try to read it, nor does it try to spin up whatsoever... I put the disk in, it makes an 'accepting' noise, then less than two seconds later, it rejects it. I'm running 10.6.4, with HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N running AP12 firmware.
Like I said before, the disk drive never had trouble reading anything, but all of a sudden decided to reject every one under the sun.
Restarting in Windows doesn't effect it, nor does inserting a disk before the computer boots. Everything appears normal in diagnostics, but the drive is not even trying to read it.

Why dont you post the explanation for certain MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 superdrives not being able to read: dvds/ cds/ blank dvds/ blank cds/ burned dvds/ burned cds or a combination thereof?
Apple's firmware 2.1 update released late june 2007 unwittingly fried many superdrives functionality and apple pulled the firmware update as soon as the buzz on the internet took hold, but not before many drives were randomly zapped.
Unfortunately it seems that apple doesnt publicly admit any problems on their website, in the hope that users will not notice the loss of functionality (my drive cant recognise blank/burned media, but published (pressed) dvds and cds are recognised, hence one doesn't notice there is a problem at first).

I've rented 3 dvds from Netflix and tried to watch them in my MBP, thinking there was a problem with the dvd, but they all have the same issues. The video will suddenly freeze but the audio keeps going. The only way I can get out of this frozen screen is to use the remote that came w/ my MBP to eject the dvd. Also, the dvd menus are no longer functional. I can only press play but I can not navigate the menus with my remote, or with the mouse (the mouse cursor disappears now when I put a dvd in the drive). When I press play, it will play for about 10 minutes and then freeze. It seems like each time it's freezing about halfway into a track/chapter. I can eject the dvd, go back to the beginning, skip forward to the next track, and rewind to just after the point where it freezes, but I have to do this with EVERY track/chapter.
And I have to eject it every time or it won't play at all. This is a dvd-burning Superdrive. I have no idea how I would go about replacing the drive if it's broken, as it's built into the laptop with no way that I can see to access it. The laptop is just barely out of warranty. Here's another Mac oddity: when I log into Apple's own forums, the option to post a new thread in any of their forums is gone. It's not at the top of the page where it used to be, nor is it anywhere on any of the pages that I've visited. I'm talking about when I go to the main discussions page, and then click on the link for Macbook Pro or iPod, there's nothing there for posting.

Updated a 2008 15" MacBook Pro to Mavericks, then Apple store updated incrementally. Superdrive now ejects any disc put into it, external Plextor combo drive fails to recognize already burned media. Have reset NVRAM and SMC several times, done a re-install of 10.9.4 and tried several preferences related suggestions from web searches. Bluetooth on/off, etc. Plextor drive can be mounted by Parallels VMs (Linux Mint 14.17 and Ubuntu) and writes if owned by VM.
This issue started intermittently from Mavericks 10.9.2 and is now total at 10.9.4. Media disc's do not start iTunes post install and in case of external drive are not recognized as written media.

Wondering if there is a speed reading app for Mac OS X like there is for iphone, like ReadQuick? Reading for school is taking a lot longer than I want with the words stretching almost the whole width of the 21.5 inch screen on my iMac?

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

my iMac won't read some dvds. Specifically at the moment, a factory Paul McCartney live dvd. When inserted, it tries to read it, whirrs and clunks for about 20 seconds then ejects it. It plays on my old G4 1.2dp and both my bluRay player and dvd players in my lounge. I've had problems like this with dvd-r's before but not with factory made dvd's. Since it plays on my home system and G4 I guess it's not a region issue (I'm in the UK) and I can't find any info on the dvd that says it's any particular region. Other factory dvd's can play fine?

Trying to upgrade form 10.5.8 and upon the first reboot, the DVD ejects and the upgrade will not continue. Prior to the reboot, the only message is that the installation will continue after it reboots but it never does. There are a bunch of pkg files in the MacOSX Install Data folder. Has anyone seen this before of do you know how to manually continue the installation? It's acting like the media may be bad but I have no other MAC to test it on and no access to other install media to test. I was able to copy the contents of the dvd drive to an external drive but unfortunately it won't let you install from that volume.

Since aquiring my own Mac G4 digital audio for dirt cheap (£0 ) I've been reassembling the peices. It works entirely, but I have a strange problem with the optical drives. Since the guy I had got it from removed almost everything (RAM, CD/DVD, HDD), I used spare parts to get it running. It boots into OSX 10.5 fine and everything seems to work ok, but upon powering the mac up, it ejects the DVD drive tray when the gray screen shows. It's done it with every drive I have tried and stops me from booting from CDs.
Is there any reason it could be doing this? These drives I know work 100%.

I got a new 1tb WD internal hard drive and I took it out of the box and popped it right into my macbook pro 15". It fits and i am able to easily close the back on the computer. My only problem is that when i start up the computer, it loads for a few minutes, but 100% of the time after about 3-4 minutes i get a notice saying I did not eject the drive safely and all that. After that the internal hard drive is no longer there. I cant see it in my finder, or disk utility. BTW I am booting from my old hard drive externally. What would cause the new internal hard drive to eject itself?

I had a good-running Powerbook G4 for several years until -- seemingly out of nowhere -- it started rejecting all new, blank CDs (DVDs as well). It still reads disks with data on them, but after a couple of seconds, ejects blank ones. I'm running OS 10.3.9 and do all the software updating.
I've tried re-starting, while holding the option key down, and some other things I picked up on the Internet, but to no avail.

Put a CD into my 2007 MacBook Pro today to find it immediatly ejected it without even trying to read it. Happens with all disks. I've had a similar problem where it would fail to read disks & eject them after about 20 seconds, that turned out just to be a dusty laser, this is different, takes about 5 seconds before ejecting.

I replaced my superdisk with a 500 Gb Seagate drive in an optibay enclosure (unibody MBP running 10.6.2). The drive mounts fine on startup, and has not exhibited any unpredictable behavior in the file system, but it frequently ejects and provides me with this unhelpful message:The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off. To eject a disk, select it in the Finder and choose File . Eject. The next time you connect the disk, Mac OS X will attempt to repair any damage to the information on the disk.
Once the drive ejects it is not visible in disk utility. I can hear it spinning continuously, but cannot access the drive. Moreover, I cannot access the drive unless I fully shut down the system and then reboot. A restart is often not sufficient to get the drive back up, but a full shutdown has worked every time so far.
The behavior seems to happen when the computer sleeps. I noticed that it would also happen sometimes if I handled the computer roughly by setting it down jarringly, so I took the whole thing apart, and reseated the drive within the enclosure, but the drive still ejects frequently, about once per day.
