Feb 19, 2010
Ever since I ran Onyx last week, mds keeps reading from my harddrive at about 2mb/second.For example I've only had my computer open for a couple of hours and done very little, just some browsing, and Activity Monitor shows 7.52GB read and 6.44GB written

So i bought this new 500GB external HD but whenever i tried to put my files in it from my mac it wont allow me and say, "This item could not be moved because [harddrive] cannot be modified." however if i connect it to my windows it works fine.
P.S just one stupid question, why would a 500GB HD has less capacity such as 470 or so; and sometimes 8GB USB will only have 7.5 G etc.

Will my Mac be able to use this external?

I heard that it can't and you need to by the Mac only one. Does it make a difference?

I am not very computer savvy, and new to your community here. (also I apologize if this is posted in the wrong forum. this one seemed the most logical, but I wasn't sure.)
Just bought an external harddrive for my MacBook, and my hope was to move my itunes library, photos, and a few essential documents to the external.
what is the easiest way to do this?
Also, after I have everything backed up, I was planning on restoring the computer to factory settings, and enjoy it being "like new" with all my content on harddrive. If I did this, would I still be able to seamless access all the stuff on the external, such as my itunes library? How would this work? Is it even a good idea to restore the computer?

im fairly convinced that this release is GM, so i finally took the plunge and installed and all went well. The only issue is when I loaded the desktop there was no icon on the desktop for my hard drive. It is seen as a boot volume and all seems fine except my desktop is blank. Is there a terminal command I can enter to reenable this icon, I created an alias but the arrow is driving me nuts

I use my external harddrive for Time Machine on OSX. I also happened to put other files on there too. But once I run bootcamp, it seems that Windows cannot recognize harddrive. Is that normal? And is there a way for me to reach the files in Windows?

I just bought a used macbook pro, 15" 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, and I have previously been using a 13" macbook, on which I recently upgraded the hard drive. I'd like to pop that hard drive in my new MBP, since it is bigger, and has all my data on it, but I'm not sure if this is a safe thing to do - if there are hardware specific aspects of the OSX environment that will be unhappy in a new machine. I'm running OSX 10.6.4..

i have a 1tb lacie external hard drive with 2 partitions. 1 hfs+ and 1 ntfs with 33 gig. i wanted to put windows 7 on the ntfs disk and followed a guide and did
SELECT DISK 1, CLEAN, CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY, SELECT PARTITION 1,ACTIVE, FORMAT FS=NTFS, ASSIGN, EXIT
When it was done my whole hd was ntfs and my hfs partition was gone. i tried Testdisk and did a quick search and a deep search (took me 2 days), but no result. i also used Mac File Recovery to find a lose volume or lost files but no result. Now i'm using r-studio and performing a scan but i think it won't find my lost HFS+ partition.
Is there a way to save my HFS partition? My entire photo life is on it. should i bring it to a recovery specialist? or does someone has the answer? maybe reformat it as hfs?

I have PowerMac G4 with an 80Gb hard drive that's full. I got a 250Gb HD with Acard ATA-133 Controller. New HD initialized fine and I used Disk Utility to copy Old HD to New HD. Mac will not boot from new HD - do not see new HD in startup HD choices when I boot from old HD. When I boot from old HD, the new HD shows up on desktop just fine. Tried to boot from OSX CD to install OSX on new Hard Drive and install routine did not find the new HD. What am I missing or what did I need to do for this new HD to take over as primary??

So today, i got a warning message from time machine saying it's past 10 days blah blah, so i plugged it my external harddrive to back up my stuff. At first, it recognized it and i thought it was backing up since i saw that logo turning counterclockwise.
Then when it stopped turning, i just close the lid of my MBP (btw running leopard) to eat dinner. When i came back and opened the lid, it says "improper removal of blah blah" but it was still plugged in. so i unplugged it.
Later, i saw that the exclamation mark is still there inside the time machine logo, so i plugged the hd back in but now nothing shows up.
i have a simpletech hard drive running MBP leopard, the latest.

Here's the situation. My wife has a PC laptop. I currently have a PC desktop, however I am considering my first mac in the form of a base MBP.
Peripherals:
22" Samsung monitor - to be attached to the MBP when not mobie
HP LJ2110 AIO printer - for scanning, copying, etc.
Samsung CLP 315 colour laser - for printing my business items
Seagate 250GB external hdd - For backups
Is it possible to use a USB hub or some form of print sharing to allow the hard drive and BOTH printers to be shared wirelessly for both the PC laptop and MBP?
Can I use the Airport Extreme? Do I *have* to use the Airport Extreme? Is there maybe a more cost effective solution.
Further to that, if I use Time Machine to backup the MBP onto the external, can I use something like vice versa to backup the PC to the same drive? Can they both access files, or do I require some kind of file server for sharing music, etc?

I have a white g3 ibook dual usb. I put in a bigger hard drive and can't install tiger which is a cd not dvd that boots fine in my imac. Cd drive will not eject with eject (f12) key or fn f12. I have to pull it open manually. I can reset the nvram by booting into firmware and typing reset all. I can't boot up to a screen with a refresh arrow and a right arrow that I can click on but nothing happens. All I get a start up is a folder with a blinkin face question mark.

I am a rookie in Mac. I have a lot of multimedia which I store on external harddrives. Recently I have experienced my iMac freezing on me, specially when I am accessing the harddrives using my frontrow application. Eventually I got a database error when receiving mail to my Entourage. It was suggested that I repair permissions using the disk utility. This I did, however it never actually repairs anything, it just lists the stuff where the permissions differ. Anyway, straight after I 'repaired' permissions, my harddrive showed empty. No files left!!! 1TB data gone .
the way I understand it, it is a possibility that the file that lists the addresses of all the files on the disk may be the one that was wiped. I am hoping the data is still there and that someone has a nifty tool that will sniff it out for me.

I am new to the site, and a new macbook owner as well. My macbook only has a 120gb hard drive and I have already upgraded the ram to 4gb so before I start using it daily I want to get a bigger hard drive in it and the new Leopard OSX because I currently have the Tiger.
When I get my 320GB Scorpio Black SATA 7200rpm hard drive and I install it (which seems very easy to do, almost like the same as taking out and replacing the ram), what steps do I need to do when I boot up the laptop with the blank hard drive? Do I need to put the CD in before I boot it up? Will it prompt me to do anything as it boots up?

Is there any software that can check if a NTFS hard drive is working properly and repair it if necessary?
I tried programs like Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro and Drive Genius. All seem to be good programs but none of them support NTFS even though my MBP can read/write NTFS.
I would format my external hard drives to mac format but I need those drives to be accessible on a PC as well.

I bought an Iomega Prestige 1TB external harddrive a couple months ago with it running off my Macbook Pro.
I just flew down home for spring break, leaving my Macbook Pro charger at school. However, I do have the harddrive with all my backed up files. The problem is, my PC laptop (Dell, Windows XP) does not recognizes it. When I plug in the harddrive and turn it on, the computer recognizes that there is something plugged in (it gives me the option to safely remove hardware), but there is no sign of the drive anywhere.
Is there anyway my PC can read/recognize it?

My iMac just died on me. So temporarily I dug out my 2006 macbook to replace it. Now, since it has been a long time since i used it. I realized that the superdrive from the macbook is not working properly. However, I need to install win XP via bootcamp for study issues. So, I created a Partition with Bootcamp on my macbook. Also, I have a windows desktop, and a windows XP CD. Here's my question. I know I can make an iso image with the win XP CD, then burn it on an external HD. Now, how can I make the macbook startup from the external HD and install from there?

I recently bought an external harddrive and its been working properly for about 2 weeks now. however, i accidently moved my iBook G4 and my external harddrive that was connected disconnected from the Mac. the error message of "please do not remove harddrive before ejecting..." popped up and since then it has not been working properly. i've read many articles and forums and nothing seems to be suited for my situation. it is a 400GB WD portable external harddrive and it plugs/runs by the USB port. the disk utility says when i try to repair disk:
"Disk Utility stopped repairing My Passport because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit"
and i've checked the finder preferences and everything is what it is suppose to be. am i going to have to but that diskwarrior program in order to fix this? seems like there should be an easier, less expensive, way.
