I have a replacement motherboard (G4 MDD 1.25 dual) coming in and even though I have a very talented and technical friend coming by to help, it'd sure be nice to have some instructions on removing the current motherboard and the subsequent install of the newer one. Mine is having kernel panics about 98% of the time on attempted startups and I've tried (along with the Apple Store Genius Bar) everything I know how to do or have Googled and read. I think it's perhaps a USB bus issue.
I did manage to get it to boot from the Apple Hardware Test and everything passed. And, one of the USB connectors on the back of the machine is damaged, so I figure a complete motherboard swap should eliminate all possibilities except for maybe the CPU which seemed to pass. So back to the original query. Are there docs somewhere to guide one in the removal of the motherboard? I run a recording studio with this machine and I'm dead in the water! I am looking into either a new MacIntel or possibly a used G5 to replace it with.

I use the laptop in a variety of settings. It gets really hot on my lap and was wondering if anyone has used a cooling pad they like for this problem.

My Macbook Pro under Windows XP runs hot (CPU @ 60-70, GPU @ 80-90) after just 10 minutes of gaming. The fans ramp up by themselves, yes, and after I quit the game, temps are back down within 10 minutes.
My question is, would a cooling pad be a worthwhile investment to cool it down? (I will be gaming for around 2 - 3 hours daily)
Installed a few software up dates in Parallels/Windows XP and saw the processor hit 176 degrees. Can anyone recommend a decent fan/cooling mat that will fit the AIR? I have one for my MacBook Pro that's unfortunately a little too large.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI use my white (unibody) mac for extended hours at a stretch and is covered with a hard transparent cover (speck). I checked out the cooling pads from belkin that seem to work great with other laptops but when it comes to a mac which has no vents at the bottom but at the corner where the hinges for the screen is, how effective would it be..?

I've been reading that the new 13" MBA runs cooler and the fan doesnt turn on as often, considering that the processor is the same what did they change to make it run cooler? Is there some heat exchanger now?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI try to use as much passive cooling in my PC's as possible. My current PC is nearly silent, however I am looking to replace my desktop with a mac pro. I would need the 8800 GT card, but am not looking forward to a lot of noise. Is it possible to mount a passive cooler on this model? Will it fit? I haven't really seen much mention of this anywhere.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm interested in the cooling systems of the MacBook Pro and whether or not the cooling can handle high CPU stress (gaming) when the lid is closed and its sat on a desk. I have my early 2011 hooked up to a Thunderbolt Display and I can afford to buy a BookArc Pro it'll be sat on my desk. I have no need for the MacBook display while I have my Thunderbolt monitor so ideally I want it disabled which I would do by closing the lid. If its sat on my desk with the lid closed will the cooling systems he as good as if it was open?

Wondering if people have had any good/bad experiences with cooling pads. I plan to use this for some moderate gaming and I feel like it would be a worthy investment to get one of these, both for noise and for longevity.
Anyone have any recommendations on a good passive cooling system for a Mac Pro with two ATI Radeon 3870s? I was thinking about the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2 (V2) Passive VGA Cooler. Do these things really work and how well compared to the really really really loud fans that are currently on my cards?
View 8 Replies View RelatedHow do I know if my MacBook Pro is overheating due to bad applied cooling paste?
I have no idea how hot it should be when running whatever programs.
Right now it's looking like this:

Currently running:
Adium, one chat.
Java application (Activity Monitor shows: 50% CPU, 34 threads, 636 'Real Mem'
Firefox, 5 tabs open.
It's using the intel graphics card right now.
(And if I open it up to re-apply cooling paste, will it void the warranty/applecare?)
Just like the title says I wanted to know what is the max and/or average dB value / noise level for the cooling fans of the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.I saw that there are asymmetrically spaced impeller blades to reduce noise, but also it says "reducing tonal impact". So there seems to be a noticeable noise level? I work in very quiet locations and have good ears, so I wondered if I better don't get one of these. I'm currently using an iMac 27" and once the hard disks are running at full speed after starting up I cannot hear anything.

Firstly I need a bag for it. I was reading through some posts here today with lots of suggestions on brands of bags. The ones that caught my eye were crumpler bags. Does anyone have any experience of these, are they of a decent quality and if so could you recommend one that would be suitable for the MBP 15"?
Secondly each weekend I will be taking this laptop to my boyfriend's house. We'd really like to play some games together but I need some way of setting it up in his hallway. Does anyone own anything like a fold-away laptop table/desk and know where I could find one? It would need to be smallish, just big enough for me to stand the laptop on and have a mouse plugged in. I'm not really sure such a thing exists and my google searches haven't turned up anything suitable but perhaps I'm searching on the wrong terms. The important bit is being able to fold it away after and stick it in a cupboard somewhere.
My ibook G4 died last night. After having some trouble with the battery (i have to replace it), the laptop finally did'nt turned on never again. Although is plugged with the power cord, the computer does'nt make any sound and it does'nt turn on, it does'nt even sound the cooling fan spining.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo someone gave me a Power Mac G5 2004 June. Fourty bucks. Sweet deal right? Checked it out, all parts are intact besides harddrive. plugged it in for kicks. Not even the fans turn on. (whatever, i'll just gut it and put my pc in it) apparently, the waterblock leaked and probably hit the mobo or psu. anyways, is there a possability of the waterblock/cooler system to be removed? any specific guides or something?
View 24 Replies View RelatedAfter a bit of Google research I've found countless notebook elevators for cooling purposes. So many to choose from. Just curious if any MacRumors users could share their first hand experience?
I have a 13" MBP and am looking for a slight elevator to let air get under the notebook. I do not want a stand with actual fans / coolers that plug into your notebook and use battery. I'm just looking for a simple, glorified phonebook to stick under the MBP
I have noticed this buzzing noise (like crackling electricity of sorts) coming from the left side of the machine out of the cooling vent. I bought my IMac in 2010 and have not had any problems with it until now. I noticed the "noise" a couple of months back and it would show up here and there every once in a while, it was not annoying, so I let it be. Until this last time, when the noise was loud and annoying, I could not just forget about it. I am under warranty and called into Apple to see what can be done for this problem.

I was wondering if someone could tell me what power supply is used in the current oct/quad core mac pro. Also in the Power Mac G5 and early versions of the mac pro. I am thinking of buying a Power Mac or early Mac Pro second hand and will upgrade the GPU myself and just want to know what PSU (watts) they have.

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro 15" Unibody and my titanium steel watch is resting against the wrist rest. Which is the most reliable and affordable option to protect it from scratches on the wrist rest and the top and bottom of it's body.

It had an SSD rev C will that work in a base refurb rev b or does it look like the rev D will support the same 1.8 hard drive? I can hold out a while on a G3 but I hope they update soon! It's ironic that my MBA is what I use to edit video and game to an extent so I really don't want to go back to 1.6ghz unless I have to.

We have about 10 PowerBook G3/400 computers in our school running OS 9.2.2. They haven't been used in a couple of years and now none of them will boot up. No power. I checked Apple's website and found an article called Power Management Unit. It says to hit the reset button, wait 5 seconds and then hit the power button, but it didn't work for any of them. Does anyone have any ideas?

View 8 Replies View RelatedOk so according to my unit converter ?10 sterling is $665.579 US$ . Which would be wonderful! But its highly irritating. After playing round with it I have discovered that the problem is the lists are in a different order the left list starts with A$ and the right list starts with US$. I can get around this by selecting the currency underneath the required on on the left hand list (EG if i want sterling (?) on the left hand side I select Brunei Dollar instead) This is annoying though. So does anybody know ow to help me?
I apologise for how complicated this post may seem but its hard to put it any simpler.
My friend's laptop just broke completely beyond repair (trust me this cannot be fixed without sending it out to hp, who wont fix it either). But any way, his mom and him have come to the conclusion that they are done with PC's, and are making the smart move, and going to Mac. Now, they cant afford an iMac, or a Macbook, so I suggested a Mac Mini. They only have a Samsung monitor for their HP, but I just want to know if a Mac Mini can connect to a Non-Apple Display. Yes I know they need adapters which I will help pick out for them when they go to buy it. I think I have heard it can connect to Non-Apple Displays, but I'm not 100% sure.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've scoured the web to find if anyone else has this brown substance on their unibody MacBook laptop charger, to no avail. It's inside the very thin crevices of the L-shaped protrusions around which you tie the power cord that connects to the MacBook.Anyone here has any ideas about what this substance may be? Is it simply lubrication or leakage from the power unit?
