Anyone have any recommendations on a good passive cooling system for a Mac Pro with two ATI Radeon 3870s? I was thinking about the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2 (V2) Passive VGA Cooler. Do these things really work and how well compared to the really really really loud fans that are currently on my cards?
View 8 RepliesI try to use as much passive cooling in my PC's as possible. My current PC is nearly silent, however I am looking to replace my desktop with a mac pro. I would need the 8800 GT card, but am not looking forward to a lot of noise. Is it possible to mount a passive cooler on this model? Will it fit? I haven't really seen much mention of this anywhere.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo someone gave me a Power Mac G5 2004 June. Fourty bucks. Sweet deal right? Checked it out, all parts are intact besides harddrive. plugged it in for kicks. Not even the fans turn on. (whatever, i'll just gut it and put my pc in it) apparently, the waterblock leaked and probably hit the mobo or psu. anyways, is there a possability of the waterblock/cooler system to be removed? any specific guides or something?

I can buy a 3870 Mac Edition for a good price, but am curious if I opted for an X2 on top of my single 3870 would give any significant improvements over two Mac Edition 3870s paired together? And more importantly, would it work? Also, is the Mac Pros (2007) PSU enough to power a 3870x2 and a 3870 at once?
I installed the OEM Radeon HD 4870 in a First Generation "Clovertown" 3.0GHz 8-core Mac Pro. It's working. This is the model I mean (see right column). [URL]. I pulled the card from a Nehalem.) I booted from the drive that came with the Nehalem. (Easier than cloning the system or trying to get the drivers to copy over - which gave an error on boot.) It runs with no problems. I'm busily running 3D Game benchmarks which I will report back on later tonight or tomorrow morning.

My Macbook Pro under Windows XP runs hot (CPU @ 60-70, GPU @ 80-90) after just 10 minutes of gaming. The fans ramp up by themselves, yes, and after I quit the game, temps are back down within 10 minutes.
My question is, would a cooling pad be a worthwhile investment to cool it down? (I will be gaming for around 2 - 3 hours daily)
Installed a few software up dates in Parallels/Windows XP and saw the processor hit 176 degrees. Can anyone recommend a decent fan/cooling mat that will fit the AIR? I have one for my MacBook Pro that's unfortunately a little too large.

I'm interested in the cooling systems of the MacBook Pro and whether or not the cooling can handle high CPU stress (gaming) when the lid is closed and its sat on a desk. I have my early 2011 hooked up to a Thunderbolt Display and I can afford to buy a BookArc Pro it'll be sat on my desk. I have no need for the MacBook display while I have my Thunderbolt monitor so ideally I want it disabled which I would do by closing the lid. If its sat on my desk with the lid closed will the cooling systems he as good as if it was open?

Wondering if people have had any good/bad experiences with cooling pads. I plan to use this for some moderate gaming and I feel like it would be a worthy investment to get one of these, both for noise and for longevity.
How do I know if my MacBook Pro is overheating due to bad applied cooling paste?

Just like the title says I wanted to know what is the max and/or average dB value / noise level for the cooling fans of the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.I saw that there are asymmetrically spaced impeller blades to reduce noise, but also it says "reducing tonal impact". So there seems to be a noticeable noise level? I work in very quiet locations and have good ears, so I wondered if I better don't get one of these. I'm currently using an iMac 27" and once the hard disks are running at full speed after starting up I cannot hear anything.

Firstly I need a bag for it. I was reading through some posts here today with lots of suggestions on brands of bags. The ones that caught my eye were crumpler bags. Does anyone have any experience of these, are they of a decent quality and if so could you recommend one that would be suitable for the MBP 15"?
Secondly each weekend I will be taking this laptop to my boyfriend's house. We'd really like to play some games together but I need some way of setting it up in his hallway. Does anyone own anything like a fold-away laptop table/desk and know where I could find one? It would need to be smallish, just big enough for me to stand the laptop on and have a mouse plugged in. I'm not really sure such a thing exists and my google searches haven't turned up anything suitable but perhaps I'm searching on the wrong terms. The important bit is being able to fold it away after and stick it in a cupboard somewhere.
My ibook G4 died last night. After having some trouble with the battery (i have to replace it), the laptop finally did'nt turned on never again. Although is plugged with the power cord, the computer does'nt make any sound and it does'nt turn on, it does'nt even sound the cooling fan spining.

I have noticed this buzzing noise (like crackling electricity of sorts) coming from the left side of the machine out of the cooling vent. I bought my IMac in 2010 and have not had any problems with it until now. I noticed the "noise" a couple of months back and it would show up here and there every once in a while, it was not annoying, so I let it be. Until this last time, when the noise was loud and annoying, I could not just forget about it. I am under warranty and called into Apple to see what can be done for this problem.

I have a early 2009 17 inch Macbook Pro. I usually have the laptop connected to an external monitor with the lid closed.
When the lid is closed, the laptop somtimes becomes very noisy, especially when using heavy applications.
That is why I am thinking of buying an external cooling pad.
Will that help? And if so, which cooling pad would you advise?

I have a 2010 Mac Pro currently using the 5870 graphics card to run a 22� monitor. However, I am going to add a second 27� screen to my setup. I do a lot of heavy 3d modelling so GPU power is very important. I spend hours and hours panning and zooming in dense models so I would like to dedicate the 5870 power to this, rather than it running dual monitors.
I have read that you could use a GT 120 to drive extra monitors but I�ve also heard really bad reviews for its performance, making it really painful to spend an extra �120 on it. The 5770 is �80 more and has a lot more power than a GT 120.
Is it viable to use PCI Express Y-splitters to run a 5770 and 5870 together? If so how would it work? What are the dangers in doing this?
I have done some research and apparently you can use PCI Express Y-splitters to run two high-end cards on the Mac Pro, though, I couldn�t find a lot of info on the subject. I've noticed that there are several sellers on eBay selling ATI Radeon 9600's and claim they work on PM G5's as well as PM G4's. [URL]. Could these cards just be stock Apple cards pulled from a G5 that happen to work in a G4, or are they altered or flashed PC cards that work on G5's and G4's. Is it common knowledge that you can pull a 9600 out of a stock G5 and use it in a G4?

The drivers for bootcamp on ATI's site won't install on my machine for some reason and when I use the normal xp drivers (successfully) I can't get the crossfire option to show up in catalyst control center.
Also, in the catalyst control center, it only shows the primary card as enabled and says my other is disabled. However, they are both enabled and working just fine according to the device manager.
Cards are installed in 1st and 2nd slot.
Does anyone game on a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 4870? How is the performance? Can it play most games? I'd be gaming at 1920x1200.
