View 11 RepliesSo this is my network set up:
A) Cable Modem connected to ethernet cord to new Airport Extreme Base Station.
B) Three Airport Expresses located around my house set on extending the network.
The airport extreme station is in the master bedroom and the room I am in is approx. 15-25ft away (thru a wall of course). I ran iStumbler and am getting ~42% signal and 23% noise from the main airport extreme. I am getting about 49% from one airport express with ~15% noise, ~42%/17%, and ~45%/15% from the last. Sometimes they can drop as low as 35% signal... This is not prime. Now, I do get better signal during the day, so other networks could be interfering.
I have checked local networks and their respective channels, and moved mine to an all time random number of 3. The other networks are mainly on channels 6, 8, and 11. Before I moved my network to 3, it was on channel 11. I get the same signal/noise before and after the channel move. Finally, to finish off the description... This current computer is located on the third floor. The main airport extreme is located on the third floor as well, with a relay airport express right outside the door of the master bedroom. It relays to the other 2 airport expresses. (it is also a regular airport express). Currently, all Airports are set at a Multicast rate of 2mbps.
on my new second hand ibook the wireless is really poor, 50% of the time it cant even find it, im using a bt homehub which on the pc it can run at about 6mb/s but the mac runs below 1 although last night it strangly went up to 5 for a miniute or two, i have tried making sure the airport card is in properly and the connector i assume is the ariel?? seems to not plug in very well? a little loose ? do i need a new aiport card?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a D-link router with cable internet, two MacBooks that are constantly running up against the wifi dropping out (>< * and at the most inconvenient times!). A couple months ago I managed to limit the router to one channel and it seemed to fix the problem to a degree. Its become increasingly problematic recently and I folded the last pair of Kings because of a crappy wifi link up. After looking around a bit I think I may be able to finally put to use the Airport Express I bought back in 2005 as one writer commented that the installation of that would fix the drop outs.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently upgraded into a faster Internet Provider, but for some, I'm still getting poor internet speeds using my Airport Extreme Base Station (Model # A1034) when using my Wifi.
When connected via Wifi, I'm getting at least 1-3/Mbps downstream while I can achieve 10-15/Mbps when wired.
What's causing this drastic downstream speed difference between Wifi and wired? Do you think it's time for a new wireless router?
I'm all of the sudden having problems with the airport connection in my MacBook Pro laptop at home. In areas where it used to work---a week ago--the signal comes and goes from 4-5 bars to all of the sudden none and I am disconnected from my wireless internet. Nothing else has changed (cable modem, wireless router).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5 and my Airport meter is now reading 2 bars instead of 5. Same router, same position, different OSX only.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have my AE set up in my office where three computers and two printers are picking up its signal just fine. However, I have a computer in another room that is only about 30 ft away from the AE router and sometimes the signal is very week while other times it won't connect at all. Yet, I can pick up other networks from other houses just fine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an ibook G4 1.42 ghz. It worked fine until recently. After connecting to a wireless network for a few minutes, it then begins to sporadically drop out. And after losing the connection, it can't detect any wireless networks. Turning off the card, restarting the computer, letting it sit for a few minutes... signals come in and out, but then drop again.
I'm using OS X.4, so this isn't a software problem, the OS, or caused by an update. The antenna also isn't faulty. The computer reads the card as being fully functional, but just doesn't detect any wireless networks. I've exhausted all software solutions and now can only conclude it's a hardware problem. Given the symptoms I've described, would the best idea be to replace the card altogether?
Sometimes while using my Powerbook in the house, the signal on my Airport connection will either drop completely or drop down to 1 bar which makes it extremely slow and barely usable. Normally, I'd blame the router, but the couple times this happened, I grabbed my brother's MacBook, set them side-by-side, and connected to the same access point, my PB had 1 bar or nothing at all, and his MB was at full strength and was working fine. Eventually, the PowerBook will go back up to full strength and be usable again, but after awhile, it will go back down too. It's an intermittent thing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedCan I add an Airport Extreme to a network to get a stronger signal? Im using my roommates wireless (WAP) signal with only one bar. I have the white Airport Extreme that looks a flying saucer. (802.11g?) to his Linksys wireless.
I am having random slowdowns on my connection speed using Airport (nothing to do with the notorious performance issues which I also suffer).
My appleTV and my HP 2140 get 90% (it's right by the router) and 80% (floating around the same floor of the house) signal strength respectively, download speed and throughput seems very stable on both, however on the iMac (that's about 10 feet away from the router) the signal strength is 28% ! this is incredibly low and even though it does not always hurt download speed it does hurt the total throughput when sharing files over the network. Also the SNR (signal to noise ratio) is incredibly low, below 30 all the time.
I want it to provide a boost to the signal in the basement for my touch. As well as stream music from my laptop. The issue Im having is that the music keeps on cutting out. The newer one this is listed under is working fine, but on the other side of the room, it is setup to Extend the 'n' network (which I assume means allow my laptop better signal in the basement.)
The older one is on a b/g network, which I setup as a WDS network and then setup the express as a WDS relay, which I assumed would provide signal strength for the b/g network in the house (so we are running b/g & n). But setting it up as a relay it still loses connection with the laptop (I am assuming this is with the b/g network itself) and I believe that the touch's WiFi connection also drops with the music, because it is all the b/g network.
The b/g network trickles into the basement, but I assumed with the b/g touch setup as a WDS Relay, that it would strengthen the signal for my touch and ALSO keep the signal strong between the laptop and the express (Im guessing they are talking over b/g). But after being setup as a WDS relay the music is still dropping, and I only assume the touch's wifi signal is dropping as well! I also had to setup the ENTIRE b/g network as WDS because I did not get an 'extend range signal'.
here's the run down: today I moved into a new place with two roommates. They have a wifi internet connection set up (modem + dlink router). I have been given all of the info regarding log ins and passwords. My Airport is telling me I have perfect reception and that I have a very strong signal. Yet, there is no internet (when I open Safari it tells me I am not connected to the internet). I've had this problem before, but it is usually resolved by restarting the modem or the router, by restarting my computer, etc. And here's the kicker: I am using, right now as I type, someone else's wifi connection... yet I accessed it with the same password. It's a very basic password (12345). I thought maybe this was our unit's connection, but I actually unplugged the modem and continued to use the internet with this connection. The problem is that this connection is very slow and rather useless. I'm actually able to use 3-4 of these with the same password (12345). One of them is called 'dlink,' the name of our router. But our connection is supposedly under 'Nicks,' my roommate's name).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have a Airport Extreme in my living room, I'm trying to boost up the signal in the rooms. Is there a way that I can use Airport Express as a repeater in the rooms via wireless and not via ethernet? I would like to use Express as a signal booster not to stream music
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using an airport extreme (latest firmware) with 10.6.3 on a mac pro and a macbook pro. The mac pro is wired the macbook pro is connected via wireless.
I constantly have signal drops. While the airport extreme seems to stay online (green light is sold) the cable modem always resets itself.
I can't figure out if this is because of my Optonline service or due to my router (airport extreme). Cablevision states nothing is wrong with my cable internet connection and the issue may be with the router. I've tried three different modems from them and they've supposedly checked everything (wires, signal, etc). I still think it has something to do with them. I'm hesitant to try DSL as it is slower (no fios here yet).
I don't get how it can be the router if both my desktop and laptop lose connection to the internet at the same time if they happen to be connected online at the same time.
Is there anything I'm overlooking in regards to the airport extreme? Should I trash a particular preference or try a different setting?
I'm kind of desperate at this point since it is highly annoying to constantly get knocked offline more than 5 times a day.
my Mac Pro has a very weak wireless connectivity 4-10% packet loss on average, so I want to try to upgrade it's Airport antennae (I've had the same issues on my PC before I bought Mac Pro, I fixed them by upgrading the antenna).
Does anyone have any experience with external antennae for the built-in Mac Pro Airport card?
What are the plugs in Airport called? (RP-SMA is that right?)
Are there any converters to RP-TNC, so I could plug a normal external PC antenna? Will there be any problems?
There are times that my signal are fading. What do I need to boost up my signal? I had an Imac Intel core duo which i bought last year.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI made a deal with a neighbor where we share the cost of internet. We use a wifi network and I use my MBP in my office and get 2, sometimes 3 bars of wifi. I wanted to extend wifi to the rest of the house and also be able to plug in my printer so I bought an airport express.First problem I'm running into is that where my 2009 MBP 13" laptop gets 2-3 bars, the router doesn't even SEE the wifi signal from the original D-Link Router.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWith my MacBook Pro sitting on the desk right next to my Airport Extreme Base Station, I get, according to iStumbler, a varying signal strength between 50 and 75%. I see the same with my wife's MacBook. I also have an Airport Express in another room set to "Extend a network" and I see about the same there. Shouldn't the signal strength be higher?
I have a MacBook, with OSX 10.4.11. It uses an AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86) and it connects to a Linksys router which is attached to my cable modem in the basement. Approx. 4 days ago I started noticing that the signal strength would vary, and then drop off all together. I have reconfigured my router, downloaded the new firmware for it, and been online chatting with Linksys techs all day. We have had no problems for months with this router, or with signal strength. My wife brought her MacBookPro home this evening to see if her machine would connect to our wireless network. Fired it up and no problem. Her machine, using the same airport card in it, had no problem with signal strength.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've spent the past few hours attempting to connect my new Windows 8.1 laptop to my iMac's Airport signal without any success. I was able to do this very thing using Windows 7 on an old laptop. From what I've been reading, it seems that the ability to connect to networks secured with "WEP-Shared" type security has been removed in Windows 8 because of the fact that it was outdated and insecure. It's great that Microsoft is trying to force individuals to be secure, but unfortunately the iMac's airport utility does not offer any alternatives.

I've recently converted to mac and replaced my 8 month old Vaio AR11s with a new white macbook(2.16ghz). Recently I am having all sorts of problems with the wireless. I've been reading this forum for a week of so now and realize that I am not alone with my WiFi woes. My problem is the fact that my wireless intermittently drops and although the signal strength is still showing full I have no internet connection until i turn off and on the airport card.. this happens on both psu and battery!
I have tried installing the 2007-004 update, deleting the airport.plist file and the 2007-002 update and it appears to fix the fault for a while but then it comes back. I' ve also messed with enable/disabling frame bursting, different channels on my netgear wnr834n router but my other mac(using ethernet, bought a 24" imac tuesday!) and wifes vista laptop (wifi 802.11g) are fine so I have ruled out the router.
I have finally retired my 13 inch macbook i've had for over 3 years. I bought one of the unibody 13" macbook pros and did a clean snow leopard installation, then upgraded to 10.6.1. Since then my mac experience has gone from bright sunny days to death and doom.
My airport is the major issue, it keeps dropping signal and doesn't pick up my netgear router. it works for 5-10 minutes then just looses it by itself. i try and see if there is an update or something for it but it crashes the airport and i have to switch the airport off and then on again. This is along with all my favorite snow leopard/13" mbp issues which include but not limited to the laptop freezes, hangups, and just failing to come out of sleep mode!!! most of these issues requires me to force restart the machine. I'm now back to my old laptop seeing that I'm struggling to connect wirelessly.
I moved to Mac OS from Windows 7 recently and extremely unhappy about the bad quality of fonts on web pages or my email communications. It seems the LCD rendering is not working or something.Below is a screen capture.

I just purchased a new set of BT speakers from Sharper Image and successfully paired it with my MBA (1.6/80).. and it sounds terrible I am fussing with the equalizer without much luck. What makes it worse is that I paired the speakers with my Blackberry 8300, and the phone sounds absolutely awesome playing the same mp3 file.. Has anyone notices anything about the sound output of the MBA, especially over BT?? Anything I can do to fix this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a Windows user and I recently bought a Mini C2D 1.83 to plug in to my LCD TV. The Mini is running Leopard and it's connected to the TV via DVI, 1360x768, millions of colors, the works. Everything's set up with QuickTime + Front Row + iTunes + DivX + AC3 (AC52). I dropped aliases for my Lacie NAS drive in the 'Movies' folder so that I can access my movies via Front Row. So far so good. It's a slick setup and I'm loving it.
There's just one headscratcher (and tentative dealbreaker) that bugs me... why does all video look like crap? The same movies that looked gorgeous when played back on the same TV from my retired WinXP media machine, now look like bad YouTube videos on the Mac. All dark areas are blocky as hell -- what's supposed to be black (or thereabouts) looks more like 'Turd Tetris' (a bunch of huge squares in various flavors of brown)..............
I installed Vista Home Premium on a bootcamp partition. When I load it up in vmware, the graphics really take a fall. Is this normal? I have to use the vista basic theme since it won't let me run aero!
