I just recently purchased a Macbook, and I created a bootable backup of the system. The macbook boots from the backup, but when I try to boot from the backup on our G5 and also our Powerbook G4 it will not work. The G5 does not even see the bootable partitions I created, and the G4 sees them, but when I select the partition to boot from, the computer just restarts and boots from the Powerbook hardrive. We are having to send the Macbook back for some small power issues, and we need a bootable backup of this sytem that works. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the Macbook is an intel based computer and the Powerbook G4 is not? Also, the macbook is running Snow Leopard, and the Powerbook is on Tiger.

Most of the time my G5 has difficulies starting up from the original installation-dvd provided with this computer. The drive is the standard Apple delivered LG/Hitachi GWA 4165B, seldom used and normally functioning well. The disk shows up on the desktop, but choosing the dvd as the boot drive in system preferences or using the C-key only results in a very short flash of the wellknown "question-mark system folder" and a startup from the hard drive: after a restart with the option key pressed even the boot manager cannot find a bootable optical disk at all.
The problem might be connected to my observation that the computer sometimes looses contact with the ATA/ATAPI-bus; suddenly I cannot open the drawer anymore and system info reports that no optical drive was found. In this situation restarting doesn't help; I have to shut down the computer completely and after restart all is well again for as long as maybe the whole day or a view hours.GeForce 6600 LE

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.Â
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.Â
I tried converting it in the terminal with:Â
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmgÂ
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.Â
I tried the terminal command:Â
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.isoÂ
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.Â
I tried the terminal command:Â
cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.isoÂ
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.Â

I've just bought my iMac which came with no backup/bootable software discs at all (unlike new PC's). So from my over an hour reading from GOOGLE with conflicting answers from what I can gather "Time Capsule" cannot create a bootable copy of your hardrive ... So, I as have a 1TB harddrive with the iMAC some questions I have are :
1. ) Do I need to purchase a 2TB external hard drive (minimum) to create a clone of the current harddrive & any future information stored on it as I intend to backup once a month. It "MUST" be a bootable backup as I have no discs!
2.) Is there any "cloud" storage services that I can make a bootable backup on that which can be accessed later to download via another PC or MAC to a harddrive/memory stick etc. & then uploaded to the new replacement hardrive in my iMAC?
3.) Off the subject altogether but just thought of it! I hate the keyboard with the iMAC even though its stylish it isn't lit which isn't helping me at night! So when using my old keyboard (which does light up) can I tell the iMAC to use the sign in the normal place rather than the number 2 key as well as other keys which are in different places on the iMAC compared to a PC keyboard !!!

On startup the WiFi connection symbol initially is full and black and then goes grey with in a few seconds. If I click the WiFi symbol the drop down menu shows my WiFi network which I click put in WEP code but then I get a message after a few seconds that the connection has timed out. All other Macs in the house connect to the WiFi fine.

So my mac was acting up, no sound from iChat and Spaces wouldn't function properly.
So i restart, the Mac pro gets o the normal point of turning off the display before the spin up sound, but instead this ticking sound occurred. This had a repetition at about ever 3 seconds.
So i quickly held the power button and shut down the Mac pro. I powered up the system and all seemed fine.
Has anyone ever ran across this before?

So, I had read a few posts from various sites about how a problematic iSight (one that didn't show up in system profiler) could be possibly caused by a loose cable. The guides reported finding a loose connection in the iSight cable behind the bezel. They reported opening up their MBs and successfully getting behind there for the fix.
I thought I'd be okay opening up my 15" MBP to see if my iSight dilemma could be cured in the same way. I used this guide:
to get to the cable. I did skip a number of steps immediately following the detachment of the bezel; going directly to the upper iSight area simply disconnecting and then reconnecting the cable. This seems OK because the guide is for replacing the entire cable itself; whereas I just wanted to check the top connection.

I attempted to reset the PRAM on my macpro running snow leopard this morning, by rebooting and holding cmd-option-p-r until the apple logo appeared, at which point I released and then machine then rebooted a second time. I went back to the computer about an hour later and it was stuck on the apple logo screen, with no sounds coming from the CPU. I did a hard reboot by holding down the power key and it started up fine. I've never reset the pram before and so I didn't know what I should expect as far as the process being successful, but after an hour stuck on the apple logo I figured it got stuck on something.

A couple weeks ago, I attempted to download an extension for Safari (unfortunately, I can't remember the name), and there wasn't any indication that it was being downloaded. Upon quitting Safari immediately afterward, when I opened up Safari's preference window, I noticed that some of the preference icons were missing. How to restore these icons?

I have 30GB of music on my external drives at home and 60GB of music on my laptop. I wanted to make an itunes library with the music from my laptop for when I travel without external HDD. I exported my itunes library and saved the .xml in a personal folder.(I didn't know that I needed the .itl file too before this crap happened. Why did Apple programmers need to make it so complicated and why doesn't it also export the current .itl file along with the .xml when you "export library"!?)Â
I then quit itunes and opened the exported .xml file using itunes. l went and deleted my the songs in my itunes library containing music from both drives and imported all the music from my user itunes library.Â
I did that so I would have all the songs and only the songs from my laptop. However, iTunes must have written a new .itl when I exited from my itunes from my new library. Now when I open the my original .xml itunes library with itunes all of the playlists are blank and the ratings/import dates are missing too! Is there any way I can recover this data? I went to user/itunes/PreviousiTunesLibraries and I was able to recover a .itl from a year ago but much has changed in my itunes library since then.Â
Is there somewhere(even in the cache) where previous .itl would be stored even for a short time?(I haven't rebooted since this happened) Are .itl files backed up somewhere else besides /previous itunes libraries?Â

The setup: VirtualBox (latest), Snow Leopard and Windows XP.
The situation: I installed VirtualBox, all seems fine. I then installed Windows XP. All seemed fine. I installed Gust Additions. Then I installed Safari. Then I went and downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. When it attempted to install, it would fail, and asks me to restart and try again. I went ahead and restarted. When the virtual machine restarted, it'd get all screwed up, squashed video and frozen. Then I'd get a dialog saying that the virtual machine disk image has a problem or some such, and claims that a likely cause is a problem with the harddrive. After I clicked OK, it beachball'd. I force-quit the program.

I want to upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8.I bought the Snow Leopard CD from Apple a few months ago. Installer ran for maybe 8 minutes, then said it "cannot change the contents/data of the hard drive". I don't remember the exact word. I had to use boot from CD and the keyboard eject to get the CD out. Now my MacBook Pro won't boot. It gets stuck on the grey screen, then after several minutes it shuts down. I bought the laptop used 2 years ago, and don't have a Leopard disc. What can I do?

I have been trying to install mpkg files. All the packages use authentication while installing. The system doesnt do anything after authenticating. I have tried it with all the installers. Somehow the screen gets stuck at authenticating. After authenticating, it does nothing. I am not able to add new user accounts as well. The same thing happens with authentication. Each time, it asks for password and then does nothing. I am not even able to unlock the System Preferences.

I bought a second hand iMac, formatted the HD and installed Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Fixed disk permission, did all the software upgrades, fixed once more permission and verified startup disk... and everything seemed to work fine.
After using it for an hour I've started noticing strange crashes:Â
-When I use Software Update and I click Show Details, the app crashes every time... but if i click the Install button it works fine.
-The computer is connected to the internet but Safari is not showing anything. It stays white. I've installed Firefox and it works fine. Safari not loading anything.
-App Store is crashing upon launch, every timeÂ
Checked the hardware using the Apple disk and it's all in order. Re-fixed Disk Permissions. Re-verified startup disk.Â
