Hardware :: Leave Charger Plugged In Cause Extra Power Consumption
Aug 5, 2010
So I just got hold of a few of these new battery chargers from Apple and I'm just wondering if these are meant to stay plugged in the wall, even after the green light goes off. Does the light going off mean that the batteries will no longer draw power from the power outlet and that it is safe to assume power will continue to be consumed? Or is it preferred that I plug and unplug the charger only when needed to avoid any, unnecessary, extra power consumption?
This probably seems a bit ridiculous, but after having my first power supply melt and short out on me I've been completely paranoid of this happening again. My first power supply was one of the older models from 2006. I then got it replaced by one of the newer smaller models. After about a half a year it started twisting around on the inside of the cable which got me worried. The apple store wouldn't replace it unless it was melted so I called Apple and got a new one.
I've had the newer one for about a year and the cable seems to be wrapping around itself on the inside again. There doesn't appear to be a place where it's melting or breaking. I take care to not wrap it too tightly. Using it as a desktop replacement I'd like to not have to worry about leaving it plugged in when I'm gone. I find it crazy that this is even an issue but after having the first one melt right in front of me I find it hard to trust. Are the newer power supplies any better?
Of course i'll unplug it 2-3 times a month and run the battery down to condition it, but other than that, is it bad to leave it plugged in 24/7, including when not using it and it's turned off?
I know it's okay to leave it plugged in 24/7 as long as I complete at least one battery cycle a month, but should I unplug it when i turn it off, or does it matter?
I have an 8GB USB pen drive, formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). I use it for backing up text documents (8GB goes a long way).
Is it ok to leave the drive permanently plugged into my iMac? I don't know what the life of these devices is supposed to be, so am I risking damage/failure by leaving it in?
Is there a way for me to leave a headphone extender cable plugged into the back of my iMac and have the external speakers play until I plug in headphones?
I have a late 2009 macbook pro unibody 15" and I hardly use the optical drive, in fact that startup whine is really annoying, would it be harmful if I just removed the drive completly and not leave anything plugged in?
I just got my mac about a week ago. I'm currently arguing with my grandmother over whether it's better to leave the MBP plugged into the adapter all the time or let it drain the battery.
i'm wondering if anyone has an extra ibook charger that i could purchase. i have the last g3 ibook series made (900 mhz). if anyone has an extra keyboard for that same model i would also be interested!
Is it normal for SSDs to use the same or more power as a HD?
SSD An OWC Mercury Exreme Pro 40GB SSD uses 2.2W-2.5W when active. A WD SiliconEdge Blue 64GB SSD uses 2W when reading and 3.5W when writing. An OCZ VERTEX 2 40GB SSD uses 2W when in operation.
HD A WD Scorpio Blue (5400rpm, 2.5") 250GB HD uses 2.5W when writing/reading. A WD Scorpio Black (7200rpm, 2.5") 250GB HD uses 2.5W when writing/reading. A Hitachi Travelstar 5K750 (5400rpm, 2.5") 500GB HD uses 1.4W when writing/reading.
When i want to use mp with simple task . eg. iTunes , web browsing , e-mail If i select 1CPU or 4CPU option. Can it reduce my Mac pro power consumption.
I have a pioneer 111d drive that is in a external enclosure, that I don't use anymore. I would like to put it in my mac pro. How much current do the drives draw when in idle or stand by mode. The only reason I ask. Is because, I have no need for a mac pro with two drives, as of now. I would be adding the second drive just because I can. I would pass on this if I new it was just sitting their wasting energy.
I'm considering to buy a new iMac (21,5"/nvidia or ati) and I'm wondering if someone has already measured the actual power consumption. In it's environmental paper, Apple documents that it uses less than 2W in sleep mode and 37,5 W with the display off. Did anyone try if this is also measured in real life? I may sound a bit paranoid, but half a year ago I bought a mac mini 2007 at a stock clearance, and I was shocked to find out that just the powerblock plugged in already consumes 8W, the mini itself in standby consumes 11W. Add to that a screen, external speakers and an external disk and the total standby power consumption of the lot is 25W. Terrible.
Besides the energy consumption, I'm also a bit disappointed with the speed of the mini, but that's probably largely due to the low RAM (1GB). So rather than going for the latest mini model, I'd like to go for the power of an iMac. But I would be really happy if someone could confirm the power consumption. Specifically I'm looking for power consumption - In sleep mode - While streaming itunes to an airport express, with the display off (I assume the display goes to sleep automatically when streaming. Right?) - While in normal, not too heavy operation (eg surfing, mailing & itunes)
so this is the issue. I've always used istat menus to monitor my computer usage i.e. RAM, CPU, Fans, power, etc. With my old 2008 Mac Pro istat used to display how much power it was using however with my 2009 Mac Pro it doesn't. It displays 0 Watts throughout. Any ideas on how to solve this. I'm really curious with regard to how much power this system uses.
is it okay to leave my charger plugged into the wall socket on all the time? Even when im not charging my MPB? I have this strange fear that the charger will die on me faster if i leave it plugged in all the time.
I have an early 2008 Macbook and it's been running pretty good up until this afternoon. Now I'm having what is apparently not all that uncommon a problem, where my laptop will only remain turned on for as long as my laptop is plugged in. The second I remove the charger it turns off, and it won't turn back on again until I plug the charger in again. I had bought a replacement battery not all that long ago so I'm not sure if that would be the issue. It could be related that last night I installed more RAM into my laptop. I say could be because I was using the laptop NOT plugged in for the rest of the night and most of the this morning without any problems. It wasn't until this afternoon when I started using my laptop again that the problem arose. Could this be a delayed reaction to the RAM installation or is it just a coincidence and there's a problem with my battery?

I have Windows installed on my MacBook. A few days ago. My MacBook showed a black screen . I plugged it into my charger and it works fine, once I unplugged it shows that the computer is on but shows a black screen. Another issue is that only windows is working. I cannot even logon to OS
How to calculate the regular MacBook power consumption if it is left on lowest screen brightness for about 12 hours, plugged in, with just a browser running Gmail? The following is the System Profiler->Power Information that pertains to this topic:

I accidentally left it on while I was doing some chores. When I came back it was dead (no battery). So I plugged in the charger and it immediately turned bright green when its supposed to be orange first, right? MacBook says (Not Charging) but power source: power adapter, green light is on, on the Magsafe. It's running by the power source because the battery is at 0%. I've had the charger plugged in for less than/about an hour and the 0% still hasn't changed. (Not Charging) is still there too. I bought my Macbook last August 2009, so it's not even a year old.
I purchased a MacBook a couple of days ago and it has been fine. However, today I've realised that the back of it at the bottom is getting really hot, even when the charger is not plugged in. I am not using powerful apps either.Sometimes it can almost be too hot to touch for more than a couple of seconds. This happens on any surface, whether it's on my wooden desk or not.
The back getting hot also heats up the rest of the Mac to some extent. does it need seeing to and if so will I be charged?

I have been using my MacBook pro for a lot of film editing and motion graphics. Recently, I noticed that my battery kept going down, even when charging. I thought nothing on it and kept using it. After around 4 hours, the battery went from 90% to 23% WHILE plugged in. This got me nervous. When I plug in the MagSafe charger, the light comes on and I get the "charging" symbol in my toolbar. The light turns orange and then, after a few minutes, the power starts to go down instead of up.
The laptop does charge, but only when I am running no application, when the screen is shut or when the laptop is powered off. Bear in mind that right now, I am on Firefox, that is the only application open, yet the charge is still going down. I assumed it was because I was using Premiere CS6, After Effects CS6 and Cinema4D, but now even when they are not open, the batter will not charge when I am using the laptop.
I am currently only running Firefox and Finder. Now the laptop is charging as usual. However the second I open up Premiere, After Effects etc, it goes down.
Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), 2012 edition
it only runs with the charger and also when I plugged in it starts automatically. The battery icon indicates that it has an 83% of the battery remaining. I don't know how it could happen and I would like to know if there is anything I can do because take it to repair it will be time consuming and I need for my job. The software is OS X 10.9.3
Whenever my MacBook has the charger in, there's constant 'drone' of bass from the subwoofer that my laptop is connected to, but as soon as I take the charger out the noise stops. Is there any way to stop this from happening (ie moving the cables round?) or is it just something I'll have to live with?
I've noticed a faint buzzing sound through my external speakers when a charger is plugged in to the laptop. Removing the charge kills the noise and makes the sound crystal clear again. Doesn't bother me to much, but as my uni-macbook pro is plugged in most of the time I can see this near constant buzz getting on my nerves a bit in the future. Any ideas, looking back I experienced the same thing with my macbook.
I recently bought a late 2011 15" macbook pro. Lately it emits a single beep every 5 minutes while it's running charger power. It emits the beep whilst charging and when the battery is full and the charger is still in. I've done a hardware test which didn't detect any hardware problems. The battery appears to be in good health and so does the charger.
Im in England currently (From the USA) and am using a "DYNEX" converter adapter to switch the electric current down so I can plug in/charge my Macbook Pro and iPad. It works, however the charger buzzes pretty loudly and gets hot. I brought two, one started smelling like melted plastic and stopped charging altogether. That particular charger has faulted at home before (back in the USA), so I'm not sure if it died because of the converter or because it's just faulty.
I have plugged in the newer charger and it also buzzes, but I'm really worried to keep it plugged in because I don't want it to fault out too. Is it normal for it to buzz like that when plugged into a converter adapter?
I let my new mbp(mid 2012) battery run down. It was on, I walked away for one minute and came back and the mbp was shut down. I plugged in charger and the mbp won't turn on at all. I got it on Tuesday so it is brand new.
I was launching my sims game when I plugged in my portable charger in my MacBook Pro. As soon as I plugged it in, I heard a tiny poof and next thing I know the screen turned black. I held down the power button like I normally would and it wouldn't work. when I plug in the charger, there is a faint green light.
