Mac OS X Lion Server :: Service Data Volume Is Not Ready On Reboot?

Jun 14, 2012

I'm running Mac OS X Lion Server 10.7.4 on a Mac Mini Server with a Promise Pegasus disk array attached. I'm using one of the logical drive of disk array to store the service data of Mac OS X. I had a power failure last night, and I had a problem with the automatic reboot after a power loss. It takes about a minute for the pegasus to start so the mac can't see the service data volume at boot time. Most services weren't able to start or lost their data. Is there a way to make the system/mac waits until the disk array is ready before booting?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Cannot Connect To VPN Service Unless Server Is Locally Logged Into

Jun 27, 2012

I work remotely a lot.  After I upgraded to Lion server, I am unable to connect to the VPN service remotely unless I physically go over to the server (mac pro) and log into the desktop manually.

Previously, if my Snow Leopard server restarted (due to power failure, etc) and it re-booted up to the login screen, I could still logon to the VPN remotely as the VPN service would always startup (at the login screen) without a user having to be logging in.

Now, with Lion Server (10.7.4), if the server restarts, I cannot login back to the VPN. I have to get someone to go over to the server and manually login, then I can access VPN just fine. (I do not, and will not turn automatic login on on my server due to the huge security risk.)

How do I get the Lion Server VPN service to startup before or at the logon screen even if no user is logged in?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: How To Enable / Configure FTP Service

May 16, 2012

With Lion Server Apple killed the FTP Service & GUI to configure the FTP.In the NET I found plenty of description how to enable to ftp, but I found nothing how to configure the sharepoint and ftpusers with the command line. Is their any instructions around. We need to use ftp for some industrial machines we do not offer SFTP. We tried also the Rumpus FTP Server but this isn't stable enough.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Windows Users Cannot Connect To SMB Service

Feb 23, 2012

I have two Lion 10.7.3 servers joined to my company's AD. These servers provide SMB/AFP file services to users. They have been working successfully until a week ago when a change in AD was made. Now Windows (7 or XP, doesn't matter) clients cannot connect to the server using the DNS name, only the IP address. Mac OS X clients are not affected by this, i.e. they can use the DNS name fine. All clients are on AD too. What I observe from a Windows 7 client is, I open Windows Explorer, type \xserver in the address bar, hit enter, & it denies my connection immediately. If I do the same thing with the IP address (\, it lets me in immediately.

For Windows clients, I have tried both the short DNS name as well as the FQDN, & neither work. The DNS name on the server itself is fine, verified by "changeip -checkhostname". Whatever changed in AD caused the Lion servers to start doing this because they both started exhibiting this behavior at the same time. The only info I've been able to get regarding what changed in AD from the domain admins was "We changed the UPN to", in other words, to their email address. In the system logs, here's an attempt to connect from a Windows client using the short DNS name:

Feb 20 09:24:39 xserver rpcsvchost[32619]: sandbox_init: succeeded
Feb 20 09:24:39 xserver sandboxd[32620] ([32619]): rpcsvchost(32619) deny file-read-metadata /Library/Managed Preferences
Feb 20 09:24:39 xserver sandboxd[32620] ([32619]): rpcsvchost(32619) deny file-read-metadata /private/var/root
Feb 20 09:24:39: --- last message repeated 3 times ---
[Log] .....

Why only the DNS name doesn't work.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Unable To Edit Permissions

Feb 1, 2012

I'm trying to edit permissions on a folder via the Server App, and having some trouble. I can access all of the other folders on the shared volume and edit them just fine, but on one folder the OK button is always grayed out. Here's what I'm doing: In Server App, selecting the server under StorageChoosing the drive I want to editSelecting the folder I wantUnder the gear, choosing Edit Permissions. It shows me the list of users just fine and I can see that there's a problem, but no matter what changes I make it won't let me click OK. It also won't let me click + to add a new user. This works fine on all of the other folders on this same drive. Should I just reset all of the ACLs for that folder in the Terminal and try again?

Applications :: Mail Send Button Grayed Out?

Sep 17, 2009

For some blasted reason the send button on Mail keeps getting greyed out. I try resetting from time machine backups. It will work for a few messages then become greyed out again.

When I used the Connection Doctor everything checks out as fine. My SMTP information is correct. As it has always worked in the past, works in Outlook, works in Entourage and cross checks as correct by multiple online sources and the ISP's customer service.

I have also repaired permissions.

Why would this button ever be designed to grey out in the first place? An error message after clicking would be better then a button that give no information at all.

Unfortunately this is a customers computer so I can't just swing by to check some more. The above listed steps are ones I went through before performing a time machine restore. Which worked for a while then the same problem occurred. Another Time Machine restore fixed it. Now the customer is having the same problem so I am trying to find another solution.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Cannot Edit Website Details - Domain Name Field Blank

Mar 23, 2012

I'm trying to setup a Lion Server as an internet server - not as a web server - I need access to a different port. When I use the Server UI to go to Web, I can select to edit my domain name but then in the edit window, the Domain Name field is blank, and I can't change anything such as the port, SSL Cert, etc.As best I can tell, I have the DNS setup but I'm not sure I've done it correctly. I can add a second domain name and can edit the details for that. I'd hoped I could delete the first one or swap them but no luck.I can't access the domain name from outside the LAN but it may have just not propagated yet. I can access the IP address and do see the default home page.

OS X :: Reducing Partition Size - Apply Button Grayed Out

Sep 11, 2009

I am using Windows Vista less and less on my MacBook and the partition takes up about 1/2 of the hard disk space. I tried using Disk Utility but I guess I don't know what I am doing. I choose the Partition button. In the Volume Scheme, I choose the partition that has Windows on it. In the Volume Information text box, I tried to enter a smaller size but the Apply button is grayed out. So, how do I reduce the size of the partition that Windows is installed on? I guess I am not quite brave enough to completely delete Windows from the machine. I "might" need it occasionally. Windows is being used by BootCamp.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Disable Sleep Button At Login Screen?

May 1, 2012

Is there a way to disable or hide the sleep button at the login screen? I am trying to send updates and/or commands from ARD.... But the end users are putting the computers to sleep by pressing the sleep button. This is causing the ARD updates/commands to fail. The computers and severs are all Lion OSX. If I can disable the sleep button at login then I can send the updates/commands. I normally only do the updates/commands when there is no user logged in.So I am not concerned with the case where the user is already logged in and puts the computer to sleep. I have already setup an MCX in WGM for the Energy Saver.
