Mac OS X Lion Server :: How To Enable / Configure FTP Service
May 16, 2012
With Lion Server Apple killed the FTP Service & GUI to configure the FTP. In the NET I found plenty of description how to enable to ftp, but I found nothing how to configure the sharepoint and ftpusers with the command line. Is their any instructions around. We need to use ftp for some industrial machines we do not offer SFTP. We tried also the Rumpus FTP Server but this isn't stable enough.

I work remotely a lot. After I upgraded to Lion server, I am unable to connect to the VPN service remotely unless I physically go over to the server (mac pro) and log into the desktop manually.Â
Previously, if my Snow Leopard server restarted (due to power failure, etc) and it re-booted up to the login screen, I could still logon to the VPN remotely as the VPN service would always startup (at the login screen) without a user having to be logging in. Â
Now, with Lion Server (10.7.4), if the server restarts, I cannot login back to the VPN. I have to get someone to go over to the server and manually login, then I can access VPN just fine. (I do not, and will not turn automatic login on on my server due to the huge security risk.)Â Â
How do I get the Lion Server VPN service to startup before or at the logon screen even if no user is logged in?

Right now I am able to view my Wiki data only through [URL] when I try [URL] I get a 404 Not Found. One thing that I think is interesting is that [URL] and [URL] both give me the "Welcome to Lion Server" page. I enabled the Wiki service and the Web service both through the Server application. My first thought was that I needed to configure a "Web Site" under the Web service to point to the proper directory location (such as in Snow Leopard Server). I've tried several different directories for the "Store Site Files In" field, such as "/Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default" and "/usr/share/collabd/coreclient/public" to no avail. The Lion Server documentation shows how to migrate wikis, but I didn't see anything about configuring the service (either in the Wiki service or the Web service).Â

I am new to Lion Server and OS X in general (especially Terminal and all the Unix Commands), used to Windows Server where this is a basic no-brainer in IIS Admin Tools. How can I setup the Lion Server Wiki/WebMail/and other built in webpages to run over SSL. Not sure if Apache would support SSL Hostheaders like IIS does though but if not I have a few
I have a valid externally trusted cert, changed the host name to the external name etc. The router is forwarding fine but for my life I cannot find the UI piece where I can tell all the web pages to accept SSL requests.I created a Website in the Web Pane and pointed it at 443 and that works fine so I know the router talks to the right box

how I need to configure the mailserver. I want to receive my mails from my ISP, gmail, hotmail, etc. on the mail server, where I can get them per IMAP to my Mac/iPhone/PC. Where can I set this up. I can't find/I don't know how to call my mails from e.g my ISP to get it on the mailserver. If it's working, does the mailserver call it from my ISP with POP?

I have a brand new Mac OS X Lion server. How do I go about setting up my Lion server to download updates for my other workstations (about 30). These workstations are mixed with Macbook Pros using 10.6 as well as some using 10.7, iMac's using 10.6 and 10.7 and Mac Pros using 10.7. What do I need to do on the client side as well so that they can download from my OS X server. I have created a DNS entry for my OS X server in my DNS as well as a static IP.

I'm sure we've all seen the weird IMAP glitch where mail subfolders appear down lower on the mail.app pane instead of nested neatly under the mailbox itself. Usually you can get around this by changing the Inbox IMAP prefix to "" or "INBOX" or "/" or some such path that the server recognizes as the root path to your IMAP folder. Unfortunately, this sometimes means you are unable to work with those folders or introduce other problems.Since I am running Lion (Client) and Lion Server as my mail host, I would think that there is an appropriate answer to this either on the mail.app client settings, or perhaps with a Lion Server configuration through DOVECOT. I don't mind if the solution is a command-line one, but I need to be able to easily set up my mailboxes so that mail subfolders appear properly under each mailbox, instead of being hidden away lower on the page where it is very inconvenient to find, especially when you are using multiple email accounts.

I have two Lion 10.7.3 servers joined to my company's AD. These servers provide SMB/AFP file services to users. They have been working successfully until a week ago when a change in AD was made. Now Windows (7 or XP, doesn't matter) clients cannot connect to the server using the DNS name, only the IP address. Mac OS X clients are not affected by this, i.e. they can use the DNS name fine. All clients are on AD too. What I observe from a Windows 7 client is, I open Windows Explorer, type \xserver in the address bar, hit enter, & it denies my connection immediately. If I do the same thing with the IP address (\10.0.1.10), it lets me in immediately.
For Windows clients, I have tried both the short DNS name as well as the FQDN, & neither work. The DNS name on the server itself is fine, verified by "changeip -checkhostname". Whatever changed in AD caused the Lion servers to start doing this because they both started exhibiting this behavior at the same time. The only info I've been able to get regarding what changed in AD from the domain admins was "We changed the UPN fromuser@domain.example.com to Firstname.Lastname@example.com", in other words, to their email address. In the system logs, here's an attempt to connect from a Windows client using the short DNS name:
Feb 20 09:24:39 xserver rpcsvchost[32619]: sandbox_init: com.apple.msrpc.netlogon.sb succeeded
Feb 20 09:24:39 xserver sandboxd[32620] ([32619]): rpcsvchost(32619) deny file-read-metadata /Library/Managed Preferences
Feb 20 09:24:39 xserver sandboxd[32620] ([32619]): rpcsvchost(32619) deny file-read-metadata /private/var/root
Feb 20 09:24:39: --- last message repeated 3 times ---
[Log] .....
Why only the DNS name doesn't work.

I have a Lion server and am not able to connect over "ssh" from the public ip address side. At some point I think I heard that "ssh" had to be turned on in terminal in order to work. Is this correct? And can anyone provide the terminal command as I have been unable to find it.

I'm running Mac OS X Lion Server 10.7.4 on a Mac Mini Server with a Promise Pegasus disk array attached. I'm using one of the logical drive of disk array to store the service data of Mac OS X. I had a power failure last night, and I had a problem with the automatic reboot after a power loss. It takes about a minute for the pegasus to start so the mac can't see the service data volume at boot time. Most services weren't able to start or lost their data. Is there a way to make the system/mac waits until the disk array is ready before booting?Â

I have a mac mini running lion server.I have a couple of mac clients (notebooks). I have to enable mobile accounts so notebooks will work when traveling. However, I want family to logged into server as well. I am still in testing, and I think I have client side working ok (sync on demand, sync logging in and out)However, when user now logs directly into server (or anything else that would cause a sync, manual sync or logging off), it causes errors. It appears it isn't smart enough to know it is trying to sync back to itself.Â

My company has been happily using FTP for months now. Then, for some reason that I have not yet determined, FTP stopped. I launched Server Admin and found that the service had been stopped. When I tried to click the green button to start it, nothing happened.
I rebooted the machine, looked in logs, replaced config files...nothing. It simply won't start, and I don't know why

All of the permissions are setup as they were on my local computer. I need to reset the permissions so the server can manage them correctly. I have tried to do this via "get info" on the containing folder, via the server tools and via disk utility, but I have still not managed to correct the problem.

I administer my XSERVER remotely via the built in Apple VNC. However, the VNC service occasionally crashes, and locks my session. It also refuses any more VNC logins. This is particularly frustrating when I am off site! Apple has analyzed this and has no explanation or fix. BUT!!One talented and determined technician came up with this magic workaround. If SSH access is enabled on the server, you can connect to the server via an SSH client (PUTTY is great for Windows clients), and run this command:
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -restart -agent
You must log in with admin rights, and must enter the admin password again to run the command. It can take a minute to run. After it finishes, VOILA! you can login again via VNC.

I have a new mac mini server that I need to properly setup. It has 2 identical 500GB hard drives which should be mirroring each other so that in case 1 fails I have a backup. From what I read seems I need to enable RAID 0. This system brings no optical drive so I have to network a iMac to this machine to install the necessary software I will have on the server. Can anyone outline the steps to do this properly?

I have an HP EX490 Mediasmart Server that I'm trying to get Remote Access to work with my Airport Extreme (N/Giga version). Unfortunately HP doesn't recommend the Airport Extreme for Remote Access use since it doesn't support UPnP. I followed one guy's steps to manually configure the port forwarding to get Remote Access to work, based upon comments it works for some and doesn't work for others. I've provided screenshots that match his instructions, and I was wondering if anyone has had luck and are there extra steps since I have the latest firmware on my Airport Extreme? I really don't feel like buying another wireless router if possible, but if I need to, any recommendations that has a USB port so I can print wireless with my current printer?

2. I want to restart the mail service with a schedule task, but i dont know the procedure
