I have a PowerPC G4 (3.3) and need to max it out and make it faster, what do you guys recommend i do to it.I've updated all the software i could from the apple website (itunes, safari....etc.).
Hardware Overview:
Machine Model:Power Mac G4
CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs:1
CPU Speed:1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU):1 MB
Memory:1.25 GB
Bus Speed:167 MHz
Boot ROM Version:4.4.8f2
I am new on Mac OS in the past I use Windows and there are a lot of Software to optimize Registry, Hard Drive, Defrag Hard Drive etc.
What I must use on Mac?
Well i just got this macbook yesterday and its brand new out of the shop etc.
im not getting anywhere near the advertised up to 10 hours battery life. i was sitting on mac rumors and had 2 other tabs open in safari and was downloading a small file only a few hundred kb and its only saying that i've got 1 and a half hours battery life.
is there any program that i can run to optimise the battery or something?
I've take home an unused, unloved Power Mac G4 FW800 from work and would love to hear any anyone may have to get it running @ its optimum without forking out for a new Processor. I wont be doing any gaming on it, plan using it for Media and Design like Final Cut Express4, Photoshop and Illustator and for music and movies.
Its has a Dual 1.25Ghz Processor, 167Mhz Bus, ive installed a new ATI 9600PRO Graphic Card and bumped the RAM up to its 2GB max and have an external 500GB 7200RPM Iomega FireWire HDD. I also got a Philips 19in Wide LCD 1440x900 for cheap.
I have a Mini (mid July 2010) that has worked flawlessly, yet I decided to install 8gigs of ram. At times I can have lots of things going on and with the original 4 gigs it seemed to bog down. Thinking more ram is the answer, of which it's apparently not, the Mini still can bog down even with the 8 gigs.
When checking Utilities and system memory it always has at least 3.5 gigs in a FREE status. No matter if I open almost everything. The system does recognize all 8 gigs it just does not use it all.
Is there some settings I need to tweak? All updates are installed. I'm not sure what to do to get the Mini to utilize all of its available ram. Or am I applying PC logic here?

I'm working with large video projects using FCPX and want to optimize the performance and reliability of my Mac Pro.
I'm told that the system files should be separate to my working files i.e. on a separate hard drive.
I have two internal hard drives so can I move the User Folder onto the 2nd hard drive or does the User Folder have to live on the same hard drive as the system files? Do I need to just move the video files to the 2nd HD? I also do 3D animation and would like those files to live on the 2nd HD.

so since my late 2010 Macbook Pro died I just got a new one this weekend. I was wondering what the best way to optimize the battery life on it would be as I'm noticing the battery life seems shorter on it than the new one. Is it true that if you use your Macbook more often on the AC charger than just on the battery itself it will make the battery life better in the long run?

View 14 Replies View RelatedThe building already has a wireless network in place, which is in place solely for those renting out the extra space, like her. However, since the offices that she is renting are so far back in the corner, her signal is less than perfect, and nonexistent in two of the rooms. I offered to bring in my Airport Express (previously purchased just to stream music) to connect to the network and extend the range, thus offering them complete coverage, but a little reading on the subject tells me that this will effectively cut their transmission speed by roughly half. Is there a way to optimize the Airport Express in a way to get the best signal to her offices without such a harsh penalty of loss of speed? I know this sounds impossible, but I figured if anyone knew a way to do it it would be you guys. I'm down to try anything, whether its software based or something as extreme as wrapping tinfoil around the Express. One thing I can't do is spend money to amend this problem, so I can't purchase a new Express, install a new network, etc. The Facts:
1. Older Airport Express (b/g, not n)
2. Router in the office is (I believe) a fairly newish Airport Extreme (with n)
3. The computers in the offices are the last model Powerbook G4 (g), a late 2008 Macbook (n), and a couple of year old Dell (probably g).
4. No active wired connection through the walls.
I recently upgraded to Lion OS X v 10.7.3, and i like iMail 5.2 when I work from my office or home.BUT, when I am working in the field I often have access to only glacially slow internet via an internet modem, and iMail takes FOREVER to download my messages. Way longer than my pre Lion version of iMail. Is there a way to optimize iMail 5.2 in order to optimize for slow internet connections? For instance, to partially retrieve large messages? Or to somehow deactivate all the synchronizing and other Activity that goes on in the background?

The Histogram works fine, but the vectorscope and the waveform view just display a bunch of junk. It does not look anything like what I see in the instruction manual. I attach a screenshot so you can see what I currently see.

View 14 Replies View Relatedim looking for a Freeware Bootable Defrag App for Mac OSX 10.6
i know you's are going to say "macs dont need to be defragged" but they do
reason being when you use a mac for around a year or so and seriously load up your hard drive it generates files which cannot be moved. (files over 20mb's) why do i need to move them?
when you are creating a boot camp partition it needs to move files away from the partitioning part of your drive but some files cannot be moved without a full defrag and nothing including repairing the disc or repairing permissions can fix it to move those files even if you boot of the cd.
the only 2 things that can fix it is 1: a defrag or 2: a format
so! anyone know of a freeware bootable defrag for osx because im not up for a format.
I've been advised to format my start up HDD as the data on my HDD is dispersed over such a large area, so I cannot partition my HDD.
I am just wondering the best way to format my HDD, whether it be to use a bootable clone on a separate external HDD, or to format using the start up disk (i.e. as restarting the computer pressing c, and going on from there on?) and having a back up on time machine, and restoring after. As these are backups, this means everything will be exactly the same doesn't it? As I have been advised to do this to make the area smaller that they cover, wont it be exactly the same?
Since I got my Macbook Pro back in June, boot times and loading times of apps seems to of gotten longer. I ran iDefrag to see what was going on and the most fragged file was lichking.MPQ which, as most of you may know, is the new World of Warcraft expansion. it is a large file (2.4gb).
iDefrag reported my HDD being 28% fragmented.
My question is, should or do I need to defrag? It has been asked a 1,000,000 times I know but I just can't seem to get a simple yes or no answer anywhere.
Some people say yes, some say no and some say defragging my mac caused a hard drive failure etc..
Alright so RIGHT NOW I need to defrag my drive so I can put my Windows xp partition on but I need to boot from something external and CDmaker dosent work I'm running a MacBook 2.1ghz with 1 gig ram I got it with a free iPod touch

This has happened once before a very long time ago, when I was in Junior high. The powermac i have is a used g5 but has all of his data in it, and he didn't care to reformat it for me. Is it better to wipe it and start over or try to run applejack and defrag the hard drive? Also how can I check to see if the programs are legal are not?
View 8 Replies View RelatedThere is so many mixed information all over the internet. I am a little annoyed. So it's either do you need it or not? I am new to Mac. I need to make sure my computer is taken well care of. I don't want it to have files and things all over the place in the next 6 months and something happens. I don't download anything. it's all basic use. Internet, iWorks and iTunes. That's it.
Windows you need it for sure. Used windows for over who knows how many years. BUT with a MAC no one can give a definite answer? Why is that? I getting confused and getting annoyed. First someone said that you don't need it as the computer does it for you 'overnight'. Then, there is some who says to do it every 2 weeks?
Does it? I read somewhere that it does. What is it under and whats it called?
