OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Optimize It For Use On A Slow Internet Connection
Apr 2, 2012
I recently upgraded to Lion OS X v 10.7.3, and i like iMail 5.2 when I work from my office or home.BUT, when I am working in the field I often have access to only glacially slow internet via an internet modem, and iMail takes FOREVER to download my messages. Way longer than my pre Lion version of iMail. Is there a way to optimize iMail 5.2 in order to optimize for slow internet connections? For instance, to partially retrieve large messages? Or to somehow deactivate all the synchronizing and other Activity that goes on in the background?

I have configured my VPN (PPTP)... everything worksI did not checked "send all traffic over VPN connection".Still, when VPN is active, the speed drop is huge. I get timeouts and when lucky the page loads very slow.

Have a white macbook about 3 years old/intel etc etc..I have found that when I'm at home plugged into a hardwire internet connection I get respectable torrent download speeds (100-200kb's/sec). I work in the oil and gas industry in Alberta and stay at camps often..When I connect the same laptop there my torrent download speed is terrible (10-15kb's/sec) even though downloads are permitted and many of the pc laptop users don't have a problem with the speeds. Primarily use vuze but have tried a few other torrent downloaders..Is there something within my computer settings or downloader settings that slowing me down and if so could you provide any advice on how to over come this.

My internet connection has always been very fast and I have never had any problems with its speed or loading of web pages. Over the last two day I have experienced extremely slow connection speeds and webpages have been taking forever to load. Is there a setting I can check or cache to empty to help speed up my connection? Or is there a disk cleanup to help get rid of whatever may be causing this problem?

I am using Windows right now. I never realized this but my download speed is supposed to be 768 Kbps. Though when I download something my speed is between 70 - 90 Kbps. Is this normal? I ran many virus scans and I am clean. Is there something that is slowing it down? I am also using wireless connection.

Because i'm a web developer i was trying some bandwidth limiting with IPFW in the terminal to test how my web apps will work with a slow internet connection. After i was done i did "# sudo IPFW flush" and thought i was done
But then i got a feeling that my internet connection was slow so i tried "sudo IPFW pipe show" to see if i forgot to flush some pipes. It gave me an error message: ipfw: getsockopt(IP_DUMMYNET_GET): No buffer space available

I have a MacPro Early 2009, 2 ethernet ports.Ethernet 1 is connected to the LAN and Ethernet 2 is connected directly to a SSL Matrix console (an audio mixer), whom driver needs the used ethernet port to be first of the list in the Network connections list in System Preferences. So when I browse internet I can't use the Matrix's software, and vice versa.I had to create 2 different network positions to browse internet and to work with SSL Matrix, one with Eth 1 first place, another one with Eth 2 first place, and I always have to swap positions. Is there a way to force OSX to use by default the 2nd connection of the list for internet access?Â

Recently switching from a PC to mac, I am still knew to the computer. I switched because I thought I wouldn't have to worry bout the mac running slow due to excess software such as virus protection. My macbook takes a very long time to load ALL internet pages. I know my connection is fine because my old computer, which is about 6 years old, runs super quick on the internet. Is there something I don't know. Are there any certain settings I should be looking at? I feel like I should save some money and just get dial-up! I do have a cable internet connection. Its wired in, not wireless, if that makes a difference.

I recently bought a 27'' iMac (3.2 GHz Intel Core i3, OSX10.6.4) and all was fine and dandy until yesterday when my internet connection suddenly got very slow. It takes forever to load pages, if they load at all. The rest of the iMac is fine as before, which leads me to conclude this is an internet issue. I cleared the cache and browsing history in Google Chrome and no improvement. I tried using Safari and Firefox and they were slow too.
I also have a MacBookPro (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OSX10.6.4), so I checked the internet speed on that and it was normal. Both MBP and iMac are connected via an Airport Express. I searched various forums and threads for a solution, but I know very little when it come to these things so I quickly got stuck in technical jargon. I've tried to change the DNS server settings (first to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, then to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) but this has not helped.

I just got a new MacBook Pro, but my wife uses my old 1.25GHz Alum. PowerBook. My MB pro flies, but unfortunately, the wireless ethernet on my old PB is slow as hell. I've got 11+GB of free space left on my hard drive and Safari or Firefox are the only applications I have open. I also have a cable internet connection with wireless through my 1st Gen Airport Express, yet it's still slow.

My Internet has just been upgraded from 2MB/s to 10MB/s. To confirm the upgrade I have used [URL:...] to test my upload/download speeds with Firefox and Safari. I have 2 computers on my network which consists of a cable modem connected to a white airport base station with 128 bit WEP encryption in 802.11 b/g compatible mode. The 2 computers are a dual 2.8 ghz MacPro which is wired directly into the Airport base station by Ethernet and an iMac 1.83 Intel core 2 duo. The much faster MacPro only achieves a download speed of 5.5MB/s over its wired connection while the slower iMac achieves 9.8MB/s - very close to the advertised speed over its wireless connection. These are consistent speeds not one offs so I am wondering why the difference? The MacPro is my main machine so I'd like to have the best speed possible on that. What can I try?

* The router/modem and computer are in range.
* The correct network is chosen (SkyCaptian)

The internet speed is less than 1 mb/s, I am looking for a way to hack this speed?

I have an iMac 2.7 i5, 8GB, OS X Lion 10.7.3. I purchased this iMac just about 3 weeks ago and from the beginning experienced regular dropping of the internet connection. I have cleared all other networks that appeared in the Preferred Network window other than my own. I have also unchecked the "Remember what other networks this computer has joined" box just in case I needed to. No luck. I am using an ATT 2Wire wireless router that's just over a year old but I haven't experienced the connection drop problem with an older Macbook (about 4 years old) that I also own.

I know this has been a wifi issue for many, but this is occurring with ethernet as well on our iMac 2.93. Only began with Lion update. All other 5 Macs (Snow Lep/Lep/Tiger) and several PC's on network have no problem. Have set iMac's internet connections to static/manual ip. Worked for a few days, then back to dropping. This is obviously an OS issue.

Now, the internet connection to my macbook pro stops working. The MBP is 4GB memory with intel core i7, with OS X Lion 10.7.4. Â
It shows that the ethernet is active. But it can not connect to the internet. Â
I tried to unplug/plug the ethernet cable; and renewed DHCP lease;use the same ethernet cable for another computer and it works for the other pc.Â
But for my MBP, it still does not work. Â

I am experiencing some problems when I use gmail, yahoo, or hotmail. When I click compose new message in any of these email services my internet connection is disrupted and all the pages I have opened either reset or the browser says it does not have connection. I have used the disk utility to repair permissions and that does not seem to change anything. I have not been able to find anything about this problem being discussed on the internet. I log into an email account, and I click compose message; the internet then disconnects for a few seconds. If I am streaming radio that resets.

Since the update I have had applications hanging and crashing. Mostly Mail, iTunes, and Safari. What is more annoying however is when the computer is inactive for an hour or so, I lose internet connectivity and have to shut down and reboot in order to get it back. I am on a wired connection and sharing another wired connection through the second ethernet port.It seems like 10.7.4 really messed with my machine...

After switching to a new provider and getting a new dsl modem (a fritz!box fon 7390) I tried to setup my homenetwork again. Now the weird thing is: my Mac Mini running OSX Lion Server doesn't seem to be able to connect to the internet over its ethernet port, only when using a WiFi connection...When it's connected with ethernet it can reach the dsl modem without any problems, but it can't ping/telnet or anything else through, only over WiFi... As long as I use the mini servers WiFi connection everything works fine, but that doesn't make any sense to me.I've checked the servers setting and the Fritz!box settings and I can't seem to find anything obvious. Of course I could just go on and use the WiFi connection...
ps: all the other computers can connect fine using either wifi or regular lan connection... I even tried the exact same cable with another laptop just to make sure...

I am on a Mac Mini connected to the Net via a FON wireless router and Ethernet directly to my broadband modem. I have had problems with both the modem and an Airport Extreme, which eventually died, but I am back up again with the modem via the FON router. The odd thing is that I can't get Ethernet to work over a direct connection to the modem. Diagnostics tells me that the ISP and Internet fails. I can connect to the modem over Ethernet, however, change its settings etc. in my browser. There are solutions mentioned here involving changing the etc/authorization file, but wouldn't that also affect the WiFi if that was the problem?Â
In short, Ethernet connection to modem works. WiFi connection to FON router and then to the ISP and Internet works. But the Ethernet configuration does't go that last bit, it only works locally. Using that route, I can't connect to the outside world. I have restarted the modem, the computer etc., but that should not be the problem as both works over WiFi, using the same settings for the modem. How do I best troubleshoot this? I am getting an AirPort Express, perhaps it will work better with the modem that the computer itself, but I doubt it.

I know this isn't the first post on this. Just thought i would make another post on this to press the issue with apple.I Got a nice shiny new 12 core about a month ago. In the process of beefing it up with what i need on it. about a week ago, one day, it decided not to connect to the Internet. I looked here on the community and see it is occurring with lion. Came back to it the next day and it worked smooth like butter. No problems connecting and it wasn't slow at all.
As of now it has been 2 brutal days of either no connection OR a connection soo slow it reminds me of dial up. Maybee even slower. The only thing different on my computer right before it happened was i installed another HD and 16GB of owc ram ( took out the original ram).
