MacBook Pro :: Just Installed 10.6.3 On It And External Disks Cannot Be Seen By OS?
Jun 8, 2012
i installed 10.6.3 on my 17" MacBook Pro (updating from 10.5.8). All my external disk drives which had all been visible to the system and accessible before the update no longer were visible to the OS. Not in the sidebar and not in the disk utility. After checking all connections etc. many reboots, resetting the pram i still am unable to see or access these disks. From there i updated to 10.6.8 but exactly the same results. i'm not sure where to go from here. i have 4 externals on 2 different usb routers and 1 external on a firewire router. I'm considering removing the routers and trying each drive separately and directly connected to the laptop.Â

I used Bootcamp on my new MacBook Pro 15" to install Windows XP Pro. After some troubles everything worked fine. Then I got VMware Fusion (latest version) installed and attached the Windows XP Pro. It did some magic, booted and all was fine. But then the problems started. I could not select any start up disk in the Preferences of Mac OS X, except for Network boot. With the Option key I can select between Mac OS X and Windows XP just fine.
I can boot Mac OS X from the Bootcamp Panel in Windows XP. I tried several things like removing VMware files for the Windows XP thing, removing partitions, but I still couldn't select anything other then the Network boot from the Startup disk in Preferences. In the end I took the install DVD of Mac OS X, used the Disk utility and started all over. I would like to use VMware Fusion to boot the Windows XP partition to do some stuff I can't do in Mac OS X (work related).

I have 5 external USB disks on my little Mac Mini, and I've noted that if I don't access them for a time they spin down, and the next time I access them I have to wait for them to spin back up again. I don't care for that, and would rather they stayed spun up.
Is there some system setting or UNIX trick I can use to bring that about? Seems there should be?

I have had this issue for years now on all my Macs.
It happens to me with my current iMac intel, which has 2 firewire drives connected to it (one 800 and one 400).
When the firewire drives randomly spin it, it sometimes makes my iMac stall a bit. Like the beach-ball will sometimes even come up, but otherwise it just like it freezes a split second while it's bringing the hard drive back up the speed.
Why does it do that, and is there anyway around it?
It makes using an external drive frustrating and hurts the beautiful mac experience.
I have 4GB of memory, very fast computer otherwise, so it's not that.

I did a software update for Safari to 5.1.5. I rebooted the system as required. Now neither the firewire external drive, nor the USB external drive are mounted.Â
They both spin and click several times and then stop. The disk utility does not see them. Power cycling the disks does not help.

My 2009 mac-mini started acting up about 2 months ago.The symptoms were:
-- slow response
-- freezing for no apparent reason the going again
-- failure to shutdown forcing use of the power button
-- long boot times
-- finder would freeze and could not be relaunched
-- iTunes would not quit
-- trying to view files on external drives may take an excessive time
I tried "everything" to try to resolve the problem.None of this worked:
-- zapped the parameter ram
-- cleared disk permissions
-- repaired disks
-- booted to safe mode
-- ran fsck
-- reinstalled Snow Leopard
There were several articles that discussed how to "reliably restart the finder". urls....Although none of the suggestions in the article or in the discussion provided any relief, I was finally convinced that I needed to disconnect all of my external drives and reboot. It appears that we have finally discovered the culprit.I have 4 external drives:
-Seagate GoFlex 3TB USB
-Seagate GoFlex 2TB USB
-Seagate 1.5TB Firewire
Toshiba 0.5TB USB (Used for Carbon Copy Clone of the internal drive)Booting from this drive did not change the problem. With all of them removed my computer worked just fine.Adding back the 3TB USB and the 1.5TB Firewire, I still have a working system.Since discovery of this error, I've found several articles complaining that this bug has been around long enough that it should have been fixed by now.Apparently Apple points fingers at the disk drive maker and the drive makers point back at Apple.Refering back to the article above, (the HTTP link), these same symptoms seem to appear because of some rogue applications. It -may- be that because I am using Crashplan 3.2.1 to backup this "broken" disk to another locally attached disk, that Crashplan is the "rogue" application. However, I've been using Crashplan for nearly 3 years and have found it to be a great app -- much more reliable than Time Machine (which proved to be nearly worthless when my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard died and was replaced with a MacBook Pro running Lion.

I have Windows 8.1 installed on my 500GB LaCie external HDD and I am trying to boot my mac from it. I haven't had any success. Thus far, I am able to get to the Startup Menu from holding the option key and Windows does show up. However, when I try to boot it, it says "No Bootable Device Found." Â
the hard drive has Windows 8.1 installed on it. It is not a drive to install Windows through Boot Camp.Â

Disks I put in the Superdrive, external hard drives, or anything in the USB or Firewire (thumbdrive, etc) -- nothing shows up on the desktop. All are visible in Disk Utility. USB thumbdrives and external hard drives are visible in the sidebar in Finder, but disks are not (only disk utility).
Because of this I can't burn a disk because the disk is not being recognized. In Disk Utility, the external hard drives appear mounted and can be opened in Finder, but why aren't they appearing on my desktop (they used to)?

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo (first generation of MacBook Pro released). I run OSX 10.6.5. My disk utility has detected a problem and says I need the install disks that came with the computer. Called apple and they said I could reboot from snow leopard or the upgrade.** Problem is that I don't have any disks with me except those that came with my brand new iMac. Can I use those to reinstall the system? Is there any other way?
**They also said that after 2007, the install disks that come with computers are keyed to that specific computer so I "might" not be able to use the disk to repair.
Additionally, and I don't know if this makes a difference but I have the airport/time capsule which backs up my computer for easy restore.

I've got an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo running Tiger 10.4.11.I've successfully installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 onto an external drive (or so the screen said). My mac recognizes the external drive as a start-up disk and allows me to select it as such. But upon restart, machine comes up in Tiger. My external drive is brand new, OWC Mercury Elite AL Pro using a fire-wire connection. After installation but two failed attempts at start-up, I ran first aid on the external and no repairs were necessary. Using System Prefs I selected the external as my start-up disk, hit Re-start, but machine still restarts from Tiger
The only other piece of information that may be vital, that I can think of, is that I misunderstood the "Mac readiness" of the drive when I took it out of the box. I first erased it (unnecessarily). Then I discovered this mistake, and made a point to re-format it using the GUID partition setting. Computer claimed that installation was successful upon installing Snow Leopard. But now, machine will not start up in Snow Leopard.

I tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 on 500 GB external drive and it will now no longer boot Ubuntu nor Mac. I need to know how to fix this. Things already tried:
*Backing up harddrive and installing Snow Leopard (10.5.4 is what it is)
*Deleting the external harddrive and reformatting it.
I want to be able to keep all my mac files. The file with a ? appears when the Ubuntu livecd is not in. (that is the only thing that boots).

I have no id whats wrong, I want to install Snow Leopard(from the external) on my Core2duo Macbook pro, which is running Leopard at the moment.
I have a Snow Leopard image, and I have used Disc utility to partition the external hard drive (GUID), and I assume the partition and install went well on the external, because in Disc start the external appears as OSX 10.6.
Then the problem: The macbook wont boot from the newly made external it just gives me this sign (of course without the colours).
I have tried to start the macbook normal, and with the option key held down were the external pops up.
I have also tried to chose the external in disc start and reboot with no luck.
I have tried to start the Snow Leopard install(external) within Leopard where the install start fine, but when it reboots and wants to continue the install, the sign appears.
The external harddrive is a 5400rpm 40gb 2,5" which is only powered by the usb port maybe thats the problem?

I purchased my MacBook in August 2006 and it came with 10.4.X and I have been fine with using that OS. However, just recently (august 08) my sister purchased another Macbook. Her Macbook came with the 10.5.4 install disks. I tried to put these into my macbook just to see if for some reason apple was nice enough to allow people who purchased new macbooks to update all other macbooks they owned. However, it does not appear to work that way. Is there any way I can get the 10.5.4 Install disks to work on my macbook (purchased august 06) that is currently running 10.4.11?

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro which came with iLife 09.My MBA came with iLife 08.I'd like to do a clean reinstall on my MBA and add the 09 apps.
First, what's on what DVD? Is the OS on one DVD and all the bundled apps on the other or is there a mix of apps on both DVD's?One potential snag is that I recall reading somewhere that the MP install of OSX includes optimizations/support for Nehalem... would this screw up my MBA or would it ignore that stuff?

The only disk my MacBook will play is the Snow Leopard start-up / restore disk. I've gone through all options I can think of to bring the thing back to life (from full software restore and SMC) but to no avail - even tried playing disks with the mac turned upside down. It takes the disk, churns away, spits it back out - whether it's a CD or DVD. Is my last and only resort a trip to the repair centre or is there another option?

Installed a new 750GB drive into my MacBookPro 5.1 Couldn't get Winclone to make image so I was forced to start from scratch with a new XP installation.
My MBP is partitioned 25%Mac & 75%XP with bootcamp and I have the old drive in a enclosure connected with a firewire. So all of old files are on the external drive now.
After installing XP I have no internet connection, drivers etc... However if I boot up on the mac side everything works fine. (I cloned the mac os already with Carbon copy).
So can I just copy all my old drivers over to the new drive? If yes how and if no how do I get them installed on the new harddrive. The MBP came with everything preinstalled.

I have the early 2006 17" first intel Macbook pro , My DVD drive stopped reading any Drive i put into , I've noticed that a couple of weeks back, but it would read them after a while.
Today I've tried installing SL on it and the drive keeps on spinning and spinning and the it would be ejected out , I've tried several times to no avail , tried switching users and it read the install DVD, pressed on install and it started installing , it required rebooting when the computer rebooted it stopped reading the drive!
Tried remote disk method to no avail, it cannot read other disk drives on the same network while the other computers read its drive, I've made sure that the share DVD option from the sharing pane in system preferences was enabled on both machines...

I just purchased a used MacBook 5.2 with Apple care until Aug 2012. The previous owner doesn't however have any of the original installation disks but he does include a backup copy of Snow Leopard. Do I need the original installation disks or will the backup copy of snow Leopard suffice? *I don't know the difference between a backup version and original* And if I need them what are they and where do I get them?
