OS X :: User - Specific Application Folders

Oct 31, 2010

I want to separate the application folders of both myself and my girlfriend using the same Mac. She doesn't need to see my system tweaking tools and DVD conversion software, and likewise, I don't need to see her BlackBerry Desktop software and Facebook album tools. Currently, all apps reside in HD/Applications, as is default. My question is: is it safe to simply copy all applications into HD/User/USERNAME/Applications, or is this going to cause problems will existing file structures?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Application Support Folders Disappeared

Mar 21, 2012

Finder has been hanging recently, causing other apps (and sometimes the whole system) to become unresponsive.  i googled for fixes, and followed a suggestion to reboot into Safe Mode, navigate through a few directories in Finder, then restart normally.  having done this, i now find that Chrome's settings and bookmarks have been wiped and my contacts and calendars have gone AWOL; it seems that most of the subdirectories under ~/Library/Application Support have disappeared, taking my Calendars, Contacts, etc. with them...

OS X :: Bloody Messy Icons - Application Make Folders Tidy

Dec 23, 2010

I am using OSX Snow Leopard. It's really great, but the folders and items within them are a total mess. When I copy or move anything to a folder, all the other icons move and icons even appear on top of one and other. Please is there any way to stop this - is there an app or something that will make the folders as tidy looking as they are on Windows? And please leave out all the Mac/Windows fanboy stuff - I have no problems with either OS.

OS X :: View All Folders/files With File Open Dialog In Any Application?

Mar 13, 2009

I have setup up Finder to view all folders/files. I know how to become root from Terminal using (su) and navigate to all folders and do things.

The problem I can't figure out is when I use Mac apps (such as TextEdit) to open a file in one of the hidden folders (such as /private/etc/apache,) I dont see them in the dialog even though I am logged in as root and have enabled the Finder to show all files.

Is there a way to view all the folders from these dialog boxes? I dont want to use vim or pico for editing.

Applications :: Finding Application That Analyzes Hdd And Lists Which Folders/files Are Largest?

Aug 23, 2010

I was just thinking about the stuff I have on my HD, and I'm not really sure what is eating up the 500gb HD I have installed in it (with only 50gb or so available at the moment). The usual culprits (iTunes and iPhoto library) are both on externals.

And i don't *think* I've got nearly 450gb worth of audio work on here.

So my question is, is there an application that will scan through my system HD and tell me which olders/files are taking up the most space? This may give me some idea of what I should start getting rid of.

Applications :: All Music Supposed To Be ITunes Plus - Right?

Apr 12, 2009

Over the past few months, I've paid for iTunes plus upgrades as they've become available for the different albums I'd bought from iTunes. However, I just noticed that they now claim that all music is now iTunes Plus.. but I still have 127 purchased tracks in my library that are not iTunes plus. I looked up the music in the itunes store, and sure enough, it is iTunes plus there. How do I get itunes to upgrade these 127 tracks for 30 cents per track or $3.00 per album?

Hardware :: Isn't The ON Option Not Supposed To Spin Down When The Drive Has Not Been In Use For A While

Apr 18, 2007

I am not quite sure the difference between the AUTO and ON power options. When I have it set to ON the drive will power on when the computer powers on, power off when the computer powers off and it will spin down when it has not been used for a while. Isn't the ON option not supposed to spin down when the drive has not been in use for a while?

Currently the AUTO setting does the same as the ON setting. It powers on and off with the computer and spins down when the drive has not been used in a while.

Mac Mini :: Supposed To Come With A Mac OS X Install Disc/USB Drive?

Jun 15, 2012

I just got a new Mac Mini at work today. I noticed something missing from its small box. Is it supposed to come with a Mac OS X 10.7.x install disc/USB flash drive or something in case I ever need to reinstall, fix, etc.? I only got these items:

1. Mac Mini

2. DVI to HDMI adapter

3. Power adapter

4. White Apple stickers

5. A manual (didn't see any disc and USB flash drive in it?)

If I am missing it, then I hope I don't have to return since I already set it up, installed a bunch of software, copy my data, etc.

OS X :: Exchange Server 2003 Supposed To Work With SL (CNet)

Aug 28, 2009

I read this article which explains that Exchange Server 2003 is actually supposed to work: [URL]

Exchange Support
Apple has built in support for Microsoft's Exchange Server 2007. This is what, on a PC, pushes and synchronises all your email, contact info and calendar entries to Outlook and your phone. By doing this, OS X's Mail, iCal and Address Book apps sync up just like Outlook. Note that if your company is still running Exchange Server 2003 (ours is), you will still be able to sync Snow Leopard with your office server. We confirmed this with Microsoft, a spokesperson from which said, "Correct -- it will work with Exchange Server 2003 as well." Our IT boffins here at CBSi confirmed this too. I know it's still early, but has anyone had any luck getting this to work? I'm about 30 minutes away from installing the $29 SL on my laptop. And I'm really hoping to have the ability to eliminate having a PC desktop on at work strictly for the connection to our exchange server 2003.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Is It Install DVD Supposed To Auto-eject During Installation

May 8, 2012

I just recently purchased Snow Leopard and everything seemed to be going well. The installer popped up after I put it into my External DVD Drive and the installation was going smoothly but soon my MBP would restart and the installation would continue. The problem is that at around 35% completion, or in my case 32 minutes left, the disc would come out of the drive and any attempts to put it back in would result in the DVD drive promptly spitting the disc back out.

I don't think it's the MBP that is at fault since I would have received an error message or something of the like. My only guess is that either the Installation DVD is faulty or the External DVD Drive is causing the issue. I'm leaning towards the DVD Drive especially since it suddenly stopped reading the disc entirely while I'm typing this. I'm using an AmazonBasics USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive which should be fully compatible with Macs.

MacBook Pro :: Tell If It Supports 802.11n 5GHz?

Mar 1, 2012

As I wait for my Apple Extreme Base Station, I was wondering if it would make sense to create two different SSID networks. One Mixed b/g for 2.4GHz devices and another one solely for 5GHz. I know my ATV2 supports 802.11n in 5GHz. As I go down my list of devices in my house, I can't tell if my MacBook Pros support the 5GHz. Both MacBook Pros are Mid 2010 models.

The reason for creating two different networks is that the AEBS downgrades your network based on the lowest device (i.e. b/g would be forced on a n device if such device connects to your network).
