Mac :: Aluminium Macbook, Memory, Heat, Speed, Response Time Options?

Apr 29, 2009

I have got the 2.4ghz aluminium macbook, and I upgraded the ram to 4GB about a 2 months back. I have always felt that my macbook is slower now than before the upgrade(which is strange), but recently the situation became worst. My macbook would randomly heats up very quickly, iStats pro would show me that i only have 1-10MB of free memory, my fan would be running on 6200rpm. response rate would be much slower, and circle of rainbow also occurs much more often.I get panic whenever this happens(i have only got my macbook for 5-months), so when that happens i usually try to quit those application that i am not using like mail, safari, iwork 09 and etc. It didn't really help much(or maybe not at all) until at some point(around about 30-45mins) the systems automatically cools down, reduce fan speed and etc but similar problem would happen again in 30mins.

MacBook Pro :: Fans Running At Full Speed / Heat Sensors Are Fine?

Apr 14, 2010

So today I opened up my MBP to clean it out and stuff (it had a ton of dust... A wall of it had built up where the fans blow out)All is fine and dandy now except for one thing. Since I don't want to open my case up for the second time today (right fan wasn't plugged in all the way first time I started it up... oops x( ) I'm asking here since everything else seems to be fine.

What I did:
Opened everything up all the way down to the heatsink.Applied correct amount of Thermal paste.plugged everything back in (right fan wasn't perfect at first, but fixed and stupidly didn't double check everything else while I was in there)

And now both fans are running at 6k (full) constantly. I tried resetting PRAM and SMC with no luck. I'm about to grab my disk 1 and run the diagnosis to see if that turns up anything. Are there any plugs that I might have accidentally not plugged in all the way or at all that would cause this? Also any other suggestions if everything is plugged in correctly?

MacBook Pro 2,2 15.4" late '06
10.6.3
C2D 2.33GHz
2GB Ram

Also, I have iStat Menu. No apps using all my CPU (Mostly <10% usage right now) and temp is mostly <40c right now. All temps have a temperature so I'm assuming all heat sensors are fine.On a great note: My computer is so much cooler now! Even before this at 6k rpm I'd get down to MAYBE 45c if I was lucky.I also have Fan Control installed and it's not having any effect

Mac :: IMac 24" Memory Heat Spreader

Nov 29, 2010

I have been researching this and I have came up with no answer. There are note book heat spreaders available [URL]/Product/Produc...82E16835207003 and I was wondering if it will fit in an iMac. Yes I have looked to see how cramped up it is in the memory slot, but I found on the sunbeamtech website that the thickness of the total heat spreader is only .2" at the opposite side where the memory plugs in at. Also I found out the the thickness of the copper on the heat spreader is only .4mm thick which is very very minimal. I have just purchased one of these to test out with the 8GB ram I just purchased for $120 from newegg with a $20 mail in rebate

Mac :: 07 Macbook Heat - Time To Open And Clean The System?

Oct 31, 2010

I'm still running a 2007 Macbook Core 2 Duo, 2.2GHz. A few upgrades here and there - mainly 500GB HDD and 4GB of RAM. Running the latest software of everything - and it does the job. Up until video conferencing - Skype, iChat - doesn't matter, about ten minutes into a chat the video quality will severely deteriorate until it freezes entirely. I remember when I orginally got this computer this was never an issue - something that only built up over time.I've formatted this computer and started fresh about 3 months ago - the issue still persisted even after a fresh install.I think the issue is dust in the computer. Dust builds up, computer gets hotter faster and as a result, slows down.During a video chat the CPU temperature spiked to 90c and stayed around that area until the chat ended. The other temperatures were not nearly as high, with the Wireless module around 75c, and CPU cores spiking to 85.

OS X :: AFP Connection Response Time Extremely Slow

Aug 12, 2010

I'm running Snow Leopard on a Mac Pro. I often connect to a Linux server sitting at the office through afp. It connects fine, but very quickly the response time of the folders becomes extremely slow. Granted there are fire walls and network magic and whatnot between here and that server that don't exist inside the network at the office. But I feel as if this is a more recent phenomena. Connections in this way have been a little sluggish in the past, but now it's consistently unbearable--beach balls and unresponsive Finder windows. I have an internal RAID pair, and extra drives, and shared connections all talking to this machine.

Which clearly causes the occasional "hiccup" in the system. Like sometimes I wait for folders to load, or like VMWare pausing for a few seconds when trying to access some of the Mac drives. But, for the most part, the system works fast and fine. I've tried to watch the Activity Monitor while accessing the Finder windows on the server. And, all that I've learned is that FireFox is big resource hog, and that Finder barely registers any CPU effort when I click into those drives. Speakeasy tells me I'm getting around 14 Mbps for network speed. The server itself seems to be running fine (according to top and snappy terminal responses). [URL]

Power Mac G5 :: DVD Burn Speed Options?

Nov 12, 2007

I've been told conflicting things in regards to burning DVDs. I understand that the speed listed for the DVD is how FAST you can burn. What I'm looking to confirm is whether you can burn at slower speeds on a DVD regardless of how FAST it is listed as. For instance, can you burn at 1x speed with a DVD-R that is rated as 8x?

IMac :: Right Memory With Correct Speed?

Mar 15, 2009

My iMac is from 2008, the first 3.06GHz version one (with Nvidia 8800 gfx card etc). When I got this one, I read somewhere that this was the first iMac to get the bus speed 1066MHz. When I look under information, it confirms this: "Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz". I instantly upgraded the memory to 4 GB from a local computer shop back then. When I look in the information, under memory I have: "Type: "Speed: 800 MHz"". Do I have too slow memory for the computer? I mean it runs fine and everything but I'm just wondering if I could potentially have faster memory in this computer. Would it make a big difference if this was the case? When looking in computer stores I can't really find memory that has the label SO-DIMM DDR2 - 1066MHz, so maybe I have the right one?

Mac Pro :: Registering Memory Speed Of 800 MHz Instead Of 1066

I just bought a new MacPro - Quad-Core Nehelem 2.8 GHz. Before booting the first time I installed four Kingston 8Gb DDR3 ECC DIMMS, 1066 MHz (registered, with thermal sensor). It shows 32Gb memory installed, but lists their speed as 800 MHz. I assume this is a sign of a memory problem, but I'm wondering if there's some hardware or OS issue I'm missing.

Intel Mac :: Very Slow Startup And Very Slow Response Time When Doing Tasks?

Apr 22, 2012

recently my Mac is really slow, slow on startup(took around 1-2hours), and slow on task(more than 5 minutes delayed time on every single task), I don't know what happened to it,

My Mac specs:

1.Mid-2010 27 inch iMac,

2.Original 4g Ram upgraded to 12g

3.1TB HD has got more than 400gb free space.

4.i3 processor

5.Using latest Lion(I think it's 10.7.3)

Problems:

1.Startup tooooooooo slow, take more than 1 hour

2.Extreamly slow on tasks. Without any apps opened, every single click, it turned into the 'colorful fan', for instance, open finder, it took more than five mins, and it's not only the finder, it's EVERYTHING!!!!

What I have done so far:

1.I have reduced the login items

2.I have changed the password login to the automatic login

3.I have tried verify disk permission, verify disk, repair disk permission and repair disk

4.Unplug all unnecessary items(monitor, external drive etc.)

5.Run couple of time of 'clean my Mac', get rid of all the trash.

6.Cleaned the cache

Due to the ridiculous, frustrating startup, that's all I could do, however, none of them worked.

Now I am using recovery HD to reinstall Lion from a disc, but I don't know if it'll work or not.

I don't have another Mac, I don't have backups(don't want to lose my data),that's my situation.

MacBook :: Freeing Up Memory On An Older System With Time Capsule?

Aug 17, 2010

I purchased a 500GB time capsule awhile back in hopes of killing two birds with one stone. I wanted it to:1) serve as my wifi base (which it is doing very nicely)and 2) Allow me to backup all my files on my macbook in order to free up some memory.I guess my question really is, once I've backed up all my content to the time machine (acting as an extra hard drive), is it safe to just delete the content from my macbook that I am ok with not accessing when away from my time capsule? For example, all that music I still want to keep but dont necessarily listen to on a regular basis? I am completely full on my macbook and need extra room. I dont anticipate filling the time capsule anytime soon.

MacBook :: From MBP To MBA To Aluminium MB Reviews ?

Mar 1, 2009

In the last month I decided that I wanted more portability for my laptop so I decided to get a new one.At first I was going to get an alum macbook but I was scared off by all the critcism of the screen quality. Then I was going to get a Rev B Air but I was tempted by the refurb A prices so I bought a 1.8/SSD rev A. Nice machine but I was not happy with the performance or the compromises (Hulu video stutter, Eyetv download of old camcorder movies stutter, ichat video stutter, lots of beach balls as I was scrolling in Safari, fans blaring at 6500 rpms with RSS screensaver, etc). I was depressed as I did not want to spend the big bucks for a MBA rev B, so I decided to look at the Alum macbook again. I read a thousand posts here and headed off to the Apple store with my thumb drive filled with all kinds of pictures in hand. After viewing many pictures at all kinds of angles, comparing with the Air, I decided the screen wasn't near as bad as the hype. So off to ebay to find a deal. It took 1.5 hours to do a 15GB time machine migration over wifi. Here is my review.

Should my CPU usage be 99% when im decoding a dvd, using itunes, and browsing in safari? The available ram is of little concern to me. I just upgraded to 4gb.Should my CPU be so warm? Isn't 85C pretty hot for a 2.4 Core2duo? What are the limits of this chip?Seems to me like the fans are running at max
