Mac Pro :: MP4.1 CPU Heat Sink Fans And Drop Up Speed?
Oct 9, 2010My CPU heat sink fans always run above 2000 rpm. Is that avoidable?
Can I do something about that to drop the speed and get rid of the noise?

MacBook Pro :: Fans Running At Full Speed / Heat Sensors Are Fine?
Apr 14, 2010So today I opened up my MBP to clean it out and stuff (it had a ton of dust... A wall of it had built up where the fans blow out)All is fine and dandy now except for one thing. Since I don't want to open my case up for the second time today (right fan wasn't plugged in all the way first time I started it up... oops x( ) I'm asking here since everything else seems to be fine.
What I did:
Opened everything up all the way down to the heatsink.Applied correct amount of Thermal paste.plugged everything back in (right fan wasn't perfect at first, but fixed and stupidly didn't double check everything else while I was in there)
And now both fans are running at 6k (full) constantly. I tried resetting PRAM and SMC with no luck. I'm about to grab my disk 1 and run the diagnosis to see if that turns up anything.Are there any plugs that I might have accidentally not plugged in all the way or at all that would cause this? Also any other suggestions if everything is plugged in correctly?

Also, I have iStat Menu. No apps using all my CPU (Mostly <10% usage right now) and temp is mostly <40c right now. All temps have a temperature so I'm assuming all heat sensors are fine.On a great note: My computer is so much cooler now! Even before this at 6k rpm I'd get down to MAYBE 45c if I was lucky.I also have Fan Control installed and it's not having any effect
Mac Pro :: Mac Pro With Heat Sink?
Oct 3, 2008So, at my college, some departments own Mac Pros; one of them decided that they would like to fit the Mac Pro into a smaller space, so they cut ALL the handles off, which of course removed the heat sink, so the computer overheats. Long story short, the computer ended up in our tech trash, and I took it, DUH it's so beautiful (even without the handles). How can I make this computer usable? Would a water cooling system do it?

Apr 23, 2008What is your heat sink temp when the cpu is running hot, like 90+ degree C?
I recently performed the excess thermal compound removal procedure. Now I am worried that my cpu and heat sink are not in 100% contact, due to the very small amount of paste applied.
My heat sink sits at around 50C under normal load (cpu temp ~ 60). But at high load, cpu up at 90+ C, my heat sink is still at around 50-60C. Is this normal?

Jan 20, 2009At my university there was a flood during christmas break while I was away, and my office had about 8 inches of water in it. When I got back, I saw the damages and was quite sad to see my mac pro filled up with dirt and debris.
So I cleaned it out and tried to boot it up and amazingly it works almost perfectly...in fact I am typing this on that mac pro. The only damage is that the fans now run at 2500rpms all the time.
So Here are my temps from iStat. It seems like maybe the sensor for CPU B and the north bridge are messed up. Anyone have any experience with fixing/replacing those parts? I am wondering if my diagnosis is correct and what is the best way to fix this machine.

Jul 13, 2009I Got a 13 inch MBP and gave my 13 inch aluminum MB to my dad. However i noticed something with the new MBP i got. A)After installing istat pro on both machines only the older MB shows as having Heatsink A and B, the new MBP shows as only having Heat sink B, how come? The aluminum MB on boot up has all the temps (CPU, Heat sinks, HD and so on) going around 20-30 degrees FH, yet the MBP is coming up with 90-130 degrees FH. After 1 hour use the MB has all reading between 28-48 yet the MBP has all readings between 90-140 degrees FH. Both kept in the same room, doing the exact same thing (running safari, same site). I just dont want the nightmare i had with the MBA where i had to return it 3 times because it would over heat and crawl when doing anything slightly intensive. Mine are:

Apr 23, 2010I got my macbook pro core i7 yesterday. I found that the cpu temperature is 20C more than the cpu heatsink. is it a problem of my mbp? just curious to ask because it is just 2~6 degree Celsius varying in my mac mini.

i understand that there are different heatsink assemblys..vertical vs horizontal. however, i do not know how to tell the difference and i am also unsure whether or not my c2d heatsink will work on this board i receive.
the logicboard possess a t7300 c2d and model # is 820-2279-a, it appears.
i cant find anything on that model, except for on ebay.
and i totally cant find the serial number on this macbook. under the battery on the tray has no serial number listed, and i've read through this documentation [URL]

Apr 29, 2009I have got the 2.4ghz aluminium macbook, and I upgraded the ram to 4GB about a 2 months back. I have always felt that my macbook is slower now than before the upgrade(which is strange), but recently the situation became worst. My macbook would randomly heats up very quickly, iStats pro would show me that i only have 1-10MB of free memory, my fan would be running on 6200rpm. response rate would be much slower, and circle of rainbow also occurs much more often.I get panic whenever this happens(i have only got my macbook for 5-months), so when that happens i usually try to quit those application that i am not using like mail, safari, iwork 09 and etc. It didn't really help much(or maybe not at all) until at some point(around about 30-45mins) the systems automatically cools down, reduce fan speed and etc but similar problem would happen again in 30mins.

Nov 4, 2010I recently was given an old 2x1.8Ghz PPC G5 in order to build a personnal server but I have troubleshooting with CPU's temps that are really too hot (75?C with no app open, only Finder).
I know these temps are not that "hot" but I can't imagine what it would be when I'll open Safari, iGetter, iTunes, CyberDuck, Adium and Photoshop CS4...).
I first unmount everything, blown inside some bottled air to make sure there were no dust creating overheating inside and remount everything.
Installed Leopard (last OS installable on PPC machines), made the last updates possible and restart.
Everything is working well althought this CPU's temp is so damn high and fans's speed are still at 300rpm. I was looking for some app that would do the same as SmcFanControl for Intel based Macs but for PPC's ones.
After many internet searches on many forums I finally admitted there were no software able to set fans's speed, the only way was manually editing the AppleFan.kext integer's values.
WhatI did, reducing the integer values to lower rates (256x multiples), then restarted the Mac but nothing happens. As I check the changed values, they indeed are the ones I edited but the fans still are at 300 rpm and the CPU's temp 75?C...
Does somebody have any solution for that issue, I feel I checked everything that was possible but nothing seems to work.

Jan 4, 2011My PowerMac G5 fans hardly ever speed up. I mean they certainly never go full speed or ever close how they sometimes behave on start up. I never get the jet speed noise. Even when I am rendering a movie in FCP, I hardly hear the fans. Right now on idle, iStat pro reports CPU A being 58C and CPU B being 56C. Yet, the fans are still only 400RPM both CPUS Intake/Outake.

It's a 2.0 GHz dual-processor with 8x AGP video. I checked it out and the only thing "wrong" with it is that someone has set up the fans, all of them, to run full-speed all the time.First, how did they most likely do that and, second, how can I return the fans to their normal operation. This can't be good for the computer and it's so loud and annoying that I'd rather use my G4.It's a great computer otherwise, I hope they didn't do something permanent that would require a new motherboard, that's not in my budget.

Nov 4, 2010I've got this weird problem with my late 07 SR 17'' MBP, after I plug in the Magsafe charger the fans start spining and in like 3 minutes they reach 6000 rpm (both of them) and stay that way until it's finishing the charge. I did the same exact tasks with my laptop charged and plugged in, and the fans stay around 2000 rpm, as opposed to when it's charging staying at full speed.

Jul 29, 2008During the summer, I don't have A/C in my house. My temps were getting pretty high, around 55C/130F for processors and up to 78c/172f for ram. That is pretty high, and I suspect it is because the ambient temp in my room is somewhere in the 90s. I am just very acclimated to the heat, and it doesn't bother me.
I downloaded SMC Fan control and bumped the min fan speeds up to:
1250rpm for Exhaust
1150rpm for CPU
800rpm for Power Supply
1350rpm for HD
This has made a tremendous difference. CPU is down over 20C and ram is down about 30-35C. Are these fan speeds safe? What are the Mac Pro fans rated at, and will the increased speed shorten their lifespan? I'd like to keep these current fan speeds if it is safe.

Nov 16, 2008I have a MacPro 2.66 quad-core intel. 4gb ram. I have a hard-drive from my old Powermac that i upgraded to 10.5.5 for this computer. Everytime I put my computer to sleep, and then wake it back up. The fans spin up to maximum speed and all the fans are running really loud and then after about a minute all spin to normal speed.

Aug 22, 2009I have a late 2007 macbook pro and recently the fans have been going at extremely high speeds without the MBP being hot at all. I have SMCFanControl and iStat Pro and both of them said my MBP's temperature was around 55C though the fans were going between 4000 and 6000 RPM, I also checked the activity monitor for high CPU usage but nothing high there. I turned my MBP off for 5 minutes with a fan blowing on it just incase it was hot but when I turned it back on the fans immediately jumped back up to 6000 RPM. They're back to normal now but I assume it will happen again. Anyone know what's wrong?

Jan 5, 2009I was just wondering if it's okay to run the MacBook with the max fan speed (6200RPM) at all times? It's really hot nowadays and my MacBook runs at about 60 degrees Celsius idle. If I run a few CPU intensive apps, the temperature usually rises to 70-80 degrees. This is with the fan running at max speed. So what I want to ask is, will it be okay to keep the fans running at max speed at all times? I'm going to get a notebook cooler soon so that should help with lowering the temperatures a little lower.

Feb 28, 2009I've got a little problem with my iMac 24" 2.8 GHz Nvidia Geforce 8800GS 500GB. When I start it up, the fans start blowing at full speed. I checked the apple support page for support and found my problem with all the symptoms being correct. The support said I had to reset the SMC by shutting down the iMac, then removing the power cord and all the other one's, wait 15 seconds and then put the power cord and the other one's in respectively. I did this almost 10 times, but my iMac still won't stop making those annoying noises. Maybe it has to do with the SMC fancontrol app my brother installed lately.

Is there any way to set the fan speed manually, say in openfirmware?
It's a 1.8 DP June '04; I've ran ASD 2.5.8 to calibrate and test the mobo, which passed.

Every time I put it in sleep mode (by closing lid, or manually choose Sleep from menu) it goes to sleep (I check it by front indicator), but FANS STARTING TO ROTATE AT MAX SPEED (Sorry for CAPS)Â
I've already reseted the PRAM, reseted the SMC. Turn off any sharing. But that did not help.
